Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden, or if I want a sheer primer theBalm Put A Lid On It (that one doesn’t do much to prolong wear though).
Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? Haven’t really tried one that makes a notable difference.
Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? Hydrating: I haven’t tried very many, but I like the YSL Touche Eclat one.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow: The only one I’ve been using is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but I’d like to try the Nars one.
Best primer for longer-wearing foundation: Laura Mercier Radiance Primer was my go-to for years, but I also use a makeup setting spray so it’s hard to tell which one makes my foundation long-wearing.
Best primer for hydrating dry skin: Marc Jacobs coconut primer. It is fantastic!

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? NYX Milk crayon really helps colours pop.
Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? Hourglass Mineral Veil
Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? Again, going with Hourglass Mineral Veil. It has been such a great, versatile primer for me. Too bad it wasn’t so pricey.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? UD for me. I’ve tried other popular ones (like NARS) and UD works best for me. Also Milk Makeup Eye Vinyl in Bridge works wonders for those fall-out prone ones I couldn’t bear to part with. I posted about it on my blog.
Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? Dior Diorskin Forever & Ever Wear Extreme Perfection & Hold Makeup Base. It’s also slightly tinted.
Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? I’m not a big fan of skincare in primers. That being said, Laura Geller Supercharged Spackle is decent for added moisturizing skincare and Chanel’s Le Blanc De Chanel Multi-Use Illuminating Base mattifies wonderfully but leaves a glow.

Your skin tone/coloring: Fairest neutral. White foundation is my friend, as is my lavender primer to combat foundations with too much yellow. I mix and layer to get my perfect match. It’s a science I tell you! I feel a bit like a mad scientist anyway. Mad is the word! ?

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? Definitely NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base. I couldn’t believe it the first time I used it since I expect a decent amount of creasing at the end of the day with other primers I’d used due to oily lids. There was none. Nothing! And it’s been my go-to ever since.

I give second place to my beloved MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots, they last so well on me and with the NARS primer underneath it’s like a glue that holds everything in place FOREVER!

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? It depends on how my skin is. If it’s really oily then a mattifying primer works best but if my skin is confused and is both oily and dry then I’ll use something that has some hydration in it. The ones I like are:

Mattifying: Rouge Bunny Rouge Metamorphoses Mattifying Primer; Shu Uemura UV Under Base Brightening Mousse (lavender); Innisfree No-Sebum Blur Primer (similar to Benefit The Porefessional and Dior Diorskin Pore Minimizer).

Hydrating: Illamasqua Hydra Veil; SUQQU Makeup Base Creamy; Laura Geller Spackle Hydrating Under Make-up Primer.

I like all the above for different reasons and I could ramble on all day but I’ll spare you that today! All I’ll say is that I switch it up every day depending on how my skin is, what foundation I’m wearing and what finish I want. There are also plenty of primers I didn’t mention. I will give an honourable mention to the Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer for its ability to add colour and luminosity to my skin without giving me floating head syndrome. ?

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin?

Ah, I seem to have pre-empted this question so SEE ABOVE.

Your skin tone/coloring: Cool-toned and pale, but not fair.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? Maybe not the same thing, but I’ve found that a nice layer of NYX’s HD base is great for making ColourPop shadows go on with brushes.

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? NYX’s clear one (photo ready…or something) is fine. It doesn’t make the skin feel super different or smooth, but it does the job if you just want your makeup to stay put.

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? For oily skin, definitely Becca’s matte primer. To keep things light for daytime, I’ll layer a HD or SPF powder on top of Derma E’s antioxidant face sunblock. It doesn’t play too well with other makeup, but it’s pretty good at keeping shine at bay. On my oily skin, this sunblock + powder looks better at the end of a long day than full makeup does.

Skintone/colouring: fair, cool
Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? I’d say either MAC Painterly or UD Eden or, for a shadow like Tempting, UD Sin primer (I was amazed by how fabulous Tempting could finally look when I applied it over SIN Primer Potion). NYX Milk works well with some shades but I always have concerns about creasing.
Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? Hourglass Mineral Veil or Clarins Fix Makeup (not really a primer but a setting spray!)
Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? for oil control, Hourglass; for dry skin, Becca Backlighting Primer Filter or IT Cosmetics No. 50 Primer. I also have a sample of a Nars one I like – the Light Optimizing one. But in all honesty, I think the best thing if you have dry skin is to exfoliate gently and then moisturize really well before applying any primer.

Your skin tone/coloring: Very fair with neutral undertones (N10-N13); magenta/red hair; hazel/green eyes.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? Too Faced Show Insurance. Urban Decay Primer Potion is a close second. My favorite bases l for helping out poorly pigmented shadows are Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Beige, and Nyx Eye Shadow Base in Black and White Pearl. Nyx Eye Shadow Base in White does a great job of making colors pop, but is super-creamy like the Milk pencil, and creases on my oily lids. Black and Pearl White set more like Color Tattoos on me.

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? I really like Mirabella Face & Eye Primer, BareMinerals Prime Time, Nyx Angel Veil Skin Perfecting Primer l, and e.l.f. Mineral Infused Face Primer.

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? I have really oily skin, and I find most of the primers made to mattefy or control oiliness don’t work for me. Really, what works best for me is using BareMinerals Mineral Veil in Translucent under my foundation. That really keeps the oil under control, even when used over a traditional primer.

I think Nyx Angel Veil Skin Perfecting Primer is really good for not making oily skin any worse, and it give the skin a more even-looking texture. (I tried Nyx Shine Killer, but it did absolutely nothing to kill shine. It was fine as a regular primer, though.) E.l.f. HD Mattifying Balm works pretty well under my foundation for helping keep oil under control. You’re supposed to be able to use it over foundation as well, for touch ups, but I didn’t have good luck with that.

Your skin tone/coloring: Dark deep with red undertones

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? no really a primer but Duraline by Inglot is spectacular . I’m not a primer girl so … , concealer is my ” primer” . But the urban decay is cool too !

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? Magical Moringa by Lush , it cost 45 euros , ( i have it in sales for 22) but it’s magic and i have a combination skin . Moreover it’s a moisturizer in fact .

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? magical Moringa by lush or a pure glycerine oil . or Eau Thermal d’Avène for a “stetting spray “

Your skin tone/coloring: between fair and light; cool undertones with warm features; combo normal/oily skin that gets dehydrated in winter.
Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? probably the MAC matte paint pots, like Painterly
Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? Hourglass Mineral Veil
Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? for controlling oil, something like Smashbox Photo Finish — it’s too oil-controlling for me; for hydration, Hourglass No. 28 serum primer, which somehow does not turn my skin red even though it’s obviously got essential oils in it.

Kat Avatar

Your skin tone/coloring: fair warm (NC15, halfway between Color FX G10 and N10)

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? I’m a fan of MAC Paint Pot in Painterly. It has concealing qualities so it provides a really flawless base to put shadows on top of.

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? I mostly wear primer to smooth and/or color correct. I do adore the Too Faced Primed and Poreless.

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? Too Faced Hangover RX is great for hydration! It makes the foundation not last quite as long, but it’s lovely. I’ve gotten samples of it before and I think I might bite the bullet and get a full size for those REALLY dry days.

Your skin tone/coloring: Fair, cool leaning to neutral – BareMinerals Opal 01/NARS Terre Neuve.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? At the moment it’s theBalm’s Put a Lid on it or BareMinerals’ 5in1 eye primer. I’ve just got NYX’s Jumbo eye pencil in Milk so will have to experiment with that!

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? I haven’t found the best one yet.

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? For my dry skin, I like Emma Hardie radiance primer or Laura Mercier’s radiance primer.

Skin tone: light porcelain
Best primer: Nude by Nature – use it on my eyes as well as my face and it works really well. It was recommended to me by a makeup artist, who was browsing for some products when I was asking the MUA about the best primers to buy. She advised me to use this one, cruelty free, suitable for sensitive skins, as she used it on all of her clients. I have been using it ever since and it is fabulous.

I’m fair cool to neutral. My favorite eyeshadow primer is Urban Decay primer potion, the original. For foundation primer, I use two, both by Smashbox. The green for redness in my T zone and the white one to help fade some scarring…not that I’ve noticed it working yet. It doesn’t feel too silicone-ish. The green primer is the best.

Light Neutral with Green undertones
Nyx Jumbo eyeshadow pencil in Milk with UD Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Hourglass (forgot what it’s called) with UD All Nighter Spray
No idea.

Your skin tone/coloring: right now, fair with yellow/green undertones.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eyeshadow? – I use Nyx Milk for colors, if that counts? Otherwise my Wet N Wild Fergie primer really makes everything stick. it sticks almost too well, lol. I’ll use it from my lash line to my eyebrow, set it in the crease with a shadow the same color as my skin, and use it plain/sticky for poorly pigmented eyeshadows like glittery eyeshadows or sheer silvers.

Best primer for longer-wearing foundation? – It’s between Rimmel’s 24 Hour primer (the red bottle) and Maybelline Baby Skin. I like pore filling primers because I have big pores and that’s where I usually get the oiliest, so foundation breaks up there first. I find that filling them stops the foundation from breaking through.

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating the dry skin? – Rimmel Stay Matte primer! I work at a bar and I NEVER get chances to touch up my makeup during my 14 hour shifts. I also get really oily during the summer and when it gets hot during the change to nightclub mode at my job. Running around waiting tables and cocktailing in a warm nightclub is the true test for mattifying products, lol. Stay Matte kept my foundation in place and shockingly matte-to-natural looking by the ends of my shifts. I’m so loyal to it because of that

Your skin tone/coloring: Medium w/olive undertones, MAC NC37-40, deep brunette, teal-green eyes w/gold flecks.

Best primer for poorly pigmented eye-shadow: I bring out the big guns for that! Nothing like Nyx’s JEP’s or a MAC Paint Pot type product for making even something not too great show up!

Best primer for long-wearing foundation: Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel To Powder! Sounds gross, but it works fantastically under my MAC Pro Longwear Foundation.

Best primer for controlling oil OR hydrating dry skin: Hmmm, I can only speak for my combination skin, and the only 2 primers I use under foundation are the abovementioned and Hourglass’s Mineral Veil one.

Trish Avatar

Skin tone: Tanned, medium skin. Used to have cool/pinky skin, but am more neutral now. I was M.A.C. NW25 for a long time, but after so much time at the beach last year, I changed to M.A.C C5 (Studio Fix Powder foundation).

Eye primer: Used to use MAC Prep n Prime eye. Tried UDPP, but like Too Faced Shadow Insurance now.

Face primer: MUFE mattifying primer, but I have a lot of different primer samples so I also use Smashbox & Lancome.

Urban Decay De-Slick spray also helps over my Lancome Teint Idole 24 (HG for me)
