Lipstick : Mac Rebel! God, I’ve been obsessed with this colour lately! Whenever I wear this, people ask me what lipstick I’m wearing.
Highlighter : Guerlain perles du dragon météorites 🙂
Eyeshadow combo : I love neutrals with an unexpected sweep of colour in the crease, like MAC Stylishly Merry or Nars Misfit.
Skintone/colouring: Fair/cool; dark brown hair and eyes
Perfect NYE lip: something that will last the night, with all the kissing at midnight, so I’ll go with MAC Pro Longwear in Red Dwarf (Limited Edition, I think)
Perfect NYE Highlighter: TheBalm Mary Lou Manizer (it’s the perfect highlight for just about any time!)
Eyeshadow combo: the insane gold from the Clarins Odyssey palette with something darker and matte in the crease (not sure yet – want to try out a few different shadows but I might even go for Inglot 422 which is not black and not matte!) Black liner and I might even go mad and put on some mascara!
Mariella – and anyone who uses Mary Lou Manizer – would you give me some advice? I have your coloring, except I have green eyes. I love Mary Lou Manizer, it is a great product. But…
I have tried & failed for over a YEAR to get that lit from within glow (or even a beautiful blended highlight) on cheeks and facial high points. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! Brushes used: Mac 165 & 116; Eve Pearl & Smashbox fan brushes (large & fine); OCC small powder brush that has flattest top I own trying to buff and smooth edges. I’ve tried over & under various blushes and used multiple types of foundation. I would be grateful for any suggestions.
I also hope someone can help me learn how to use it with lip gloss to highlight center of lip area…I look ridiculous when I try. I gave up on asking questions here months ago because nobody ever responded. I thought I would give it one more try. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help! Happy New Year.
Do you use any other highlighters successfully? I have tried my Mari-lou manizer a couple of times by now and I am loving it. I usually use Mac 188 duo fibre brush with highlighters and use them only on top of blush on my cheekbones.
I have not decided the best mu for new year´s eve just yet.
I am very fair and cool toned but like also warm colours.
The lipstick could be Russian red or Ruby woo from Mac if it suites with my eye mu.
Highlighter: perhaps one of the Mac MSF or one of my Chanel/ Dior le highlighters. Can´t name any yet. Depends on the blush.
Eyes: Probably Dior Night golds from the 2012 holiday collection. Gorgeous!
T – thank you for replying! I don’t own the 188. ‘ve tried a Laura Geller flat top duo fiber (part of a package deal) but the bristles are really soft so tried the OCC.
I think Mary Lou Manizer is great and it’s just me because I can’t get the glowing look with anything. I am very fair & cool toned. Most highlighters show up too intensely on me. Since we are the same tones…do you think the MSF would be better? I can’t afford to buy more product if it is my application errors.
@ Kelly B. I’ve always had luck with the Physician’s Formula large flat Kabuki brush. I use it to buff out *everything*, from highlighter, contours, and any foundation formula. I think it was around $7 at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Like I said, I use for everything, and it also works well for blending out the seams some foundations tend to leave.
I’ve had the same problem when I used it. Mary Lou is a golden toned highlighter. I have a very cool tone to my skin (I can range from NW10-20) and I stopped using it a while ago – it was too golden to look ‘lit from within’ as you said. I also found that it was soo easy to overdo it. I now have switched to a similar highlighter that has a soft white glow to it (and is less pigmented too) to look more natural. I think Mary Lou is fine to use but in moderation for cool and pale skin tones. The one I use now is from Gorgeous Cosmetics (an Australian brand) which is actually an eyeshadow, I think it’s called champagne. Also with the lip highlighter, only use a really small amount. Otherwise your lips will look way too frosty! I even have tiny lips but the more I add doesn’t help to make them more ‘pouty’. Its more of where you put it rather than how much.
Hey, I have Mary-Lou, and when I use it I just use a my Mac blush brush, not sure of the number, but i get it on there and then swirl it on my hand to ensure there is not too much prooduct since it can be really pigmented, them I put it on my cheekbones!
Hi Kelly! Do you feel that the Mari-lou is too warm for you? Or way too noticable? I usually use foundaton which has either yellow or neutral undertones although my skin has red undertones. Mari-lou may not be the best highlighter for me but I don´t mind highlighter being noticable so my glow really does not come within when I use Mari-lou.
I however do have some highlighters that are much more natural. MUFE´s contour/ highlighter palette is one of them. You could check that out for a daytime look if you have a counter near you. I ordered mine from the UK. And maybe you could use Mari-lou for party looks. Mac MSF´s are usually also very noticable but I just love that glow they give. My favourites are limited edition but one of them is now permanent: Lightscapade. I have the old version and have heard that the new one is not exactly the same but you can check that out also if possible. Ask them to try it/ them on you before you buy 🙂
Hi, Kelly. The brush I like best is the MAC 130 because it’s small and has a flat top so it’s good for buffing the colour (I don’t really worry about buffing away the edges…I just sort of buff the whole thing). I also have a Posh angled eye shadow brush that is a bit on the bigger side and it works really well to apply the highlighter just on the crest of my cheekbone. For my lip, I just dot a bit on with my ring finger and then apply a tinted gloss overtop. The effect is subtle – you might not even be able to see it when you look at yourself straight on in your vanity/bathroom mirror but it will pick up and reflect the light when you move your head and just go about your day. Hope this helps.
Thank you! I’ve been looking up the products and testing tips you’ve given.
Mietta & T – Your comments helped me understand that it is a great product, but the wrong shade for my coloring and effect I have been trying to duplicate. It became even clearer when reading lip comments from everyone. I barely touch Mary Lou and my lips become exactly as Mietta described “way too frosty” and I see lip lines I didn’t know I had.
I live in a tiny town without stores for BASIC clothing and no cosmetics/skin care. So I have to rely on Temptalia and others for information rather than go check out products in person. But, I live in the mountains with amazing wildlife ( grizzly bears, wolves, moose, elk) that people come from all over the world to see.
Questions if any of you are checking back:
Mietta: I’ve looked up the Gorgeous Cosmetics champagne but can’t find the finish – is it shimmer? I am embarrassed to say I can’t figure out if a shade is warm or cool by looking at it. I must need remedial training. I don’t understand from the photo how to know the shade would give a “soft white glow” so I am having a hard time trying to shop my stash for a dupe. Also, I have thin lips too and no matter where I put the slightest touch of Mary Lou on lips…I look crazy & have lip lines I didn’t know about. Exactly where do you place the highlighter on your lips?
T: When you asked if it is “way too noticeable” everything clicked about the wrong shade! Do you have MUFE sculpting kit #1? Sephora is sold out of all shades. Since I can’t figure out a highlighter I’m scared to death of contours…can’t even find a bronzer that doesn’t look like mud on my skin! I look jaundiced in yellow toned foundation, so I neutralize with a green based primer or corrector as needed.
Xamyx – I found your Kabuki brush but my disabled hands won’t be able to hold it. I’m going to try to find an affordable long handled narrower version to practice using. Now I understand what to look for.
Honestly, I am so grateful for each of your comments…and am really glad I decided to ask. Thank you so very much!!!
Kelly: I actually have 2 kits from MUFE. The other one is #1 with the pinkish highlighter which should suite skin with pink undertones. The other one has white highlighter and I like it even more than the pink one but the pink one may be more natural and safe. Both are, however, very natural in my opinion.
Check out pictures of both + Lightscapade in order to decide whether you like the natural glow of MUFE kit or want a little bit of more glow. Lightscapade in something you cannot use on the entire face though, cheekbones only. It is probably not the most natural highlighter.
Has anyone used it successfully in anyplace else than cheekbones?
I also use Missca BB cream and it really makes the skin glow in a healthy and natural way. If you do not use powder, no highlighter is needed.
The place you live in sounds amazing!
Oh sorry about the eyeshadow, it’s the ‘Colour Pro Eyeshadow’. The Champagne swatch on the website really doesn’t show what the colour is like. Its much lighter almost the same colour as NW15 but a bit more pink. It is shimmery but nowhere near as potent as MaryLou. I definitely can try to find something more available overseas for you that’s a dup – I pretty much collect highlighters so I’ll start my stash first! In terms of wear to put it you could look at youtube videos, Pixiwoo, NikkieTutorials and LisaEldridgedotcom are starting points! If you want I can upload my own video on youtube of what Champagne is like compared to MaryLou and other highlighters. I’ll even try to show you where I put my highlights on my teeny tiny lips! My camera isn’t that great though…Check after Sunday 🙂 username: msmitty1989
Mietta that would be AMAZING! I have tried so many techniques and products and looked at youtube but not those people. I would really be grateful! I am really broke now…been selling new brushes (whah) and makeup on ebay to pay medical bills. My birthday is late January so I hope to place a SMALL Sephora order to get the VIB BDay gift. I honestly can’t afford to buy the wrong product again, but since my accident and then Melanoma my skin is so dull and lifeless which is why I really would love to figure out why I can’t highlight more naturally for daytime! I feel a little less inept reading others comments. Thanks!!!!!
Hi Kelly,
I have similar skin tone, and I love Benefit High Beam.
I dot it on the outer tops of my cheekbones, and kind of a C shape from cheekbone up and around outer eye. I use my finger to tap and blend. You don’t want it to be obvious, just a luminous glow. Hope that helps!
Hi Pami…I was curious about Watt’s Up but reading the feedback here I think that I keep trying the wrong shades. I end up getting golden although I was trying for Champagne. I am terrible with cool/warm and undertones (I rely on Christine’s input). Do you think High Beam would be ok since I have rosacea/broken capillaries so ruddy skin since it is described as more pink? Thanks for helping me!
Anyone have thoughts on BECCA? I’ve wanted to try it but pricey for me right now.
Hi Kelly, sorry I’ve been busier than expected over New Years and haven’t had a chance to make a video yet! I promise I will do it this wknd when I’m not working! xoxo ps I used NARS albatross last night and noticed it had the same yellow/gold colour to it but it was that ‘soft’ effect I was talking about before. I’ll swatch that too!
Oh thanks Mietta…I thought I was doing something wrong trying to look up your video. I’ll check again Monday. Thank you for doing this!!!!

I usually opt for a nude lipstick/gloss combo; this year, I’m looking at NYX Honey with L’Oreal Infallible in Petal.
NARS Albatross.
Something dark & intense; any of the darker NARS Night Series eyeshadows, or I may pull out my UD Black Palette, with Revlon Pure Pearl as a highlight. I’m not sure if I’ll do a smokey eye or a cut-crease, though. I never bother with false lashes, so lots of mascara is a must (L’Oreal Voluminous), and lots of black liner.
