Sonia Kashuk Dramatically Defining Long Wear Gel Eye Liner in Indigo and Cocoa

Sonia Kashuk Dramatically Defining Long Wear Gel Eye Liner ($8.99) is SK’s answer for longwearing, smudge-proof, budge-proof gel liner. It’s available in three shades: Cocoa (deep brown), Ebony (deep black), and Indigo (deep blue). I haven’t seen Ebony yet, but I did get a chance to play with Cocoa and Indigo.

Indigo is a rich, vibrant dark navy blue (I wouldn’t describe it as Indigo, personally) with slight shimmer but not a lot of shininess. It applies evenly and opaquely with an angled eyeliner brush (I like MAC’s 208). Cocoa is a dark, slightly warm-toned chocolate brown. It has a very creamy texture, and it has a slightly wet look to it, though it does dry down and has an overall matte finish. I’d say that Cocoa is comparable to MAC’s Rich Ground fluidline, but it has a more matte appearance and probably a touch warmer, too.

Both of these gel liners wear incredibly well throughout the day with no budging, smudging, or fading. They stay in place and last all day long on the lower and upper lash lines. They’re also thick and creamy and pack plenty of color, so you can easily create defined eyes with a flick of the wrist. The quality of these is most definitely comparable to Bobbi Brown’s Gel Liner and MAC’s Fluidlines. The packaging isn’t as nice (just feels a little cheap) as either of the high-end brands mentioned, but ultimately, it’s the product that counts.

Bottom Line: If you’re on a tight budget, or if you’ve merely wanted to try your hand at gel liners, Sonia Kashuk provides a solid option. The only real drawback to the line is that it is an extremely limited shade range and may be difficult to find, as it’s only available at some Targets and not currently available for purchase online.

  • Product: 27/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 3/5

Recommendation: For those who’ve eyed MAC’s Fluidlines or Bobbi Brown’s Gel Liners, Sonia Kashuk’s DDLGELs are awesome, affordable options.

Wow those look great! Next time I’m down Target-way I’m going to have to check and see if any are in. Really wanted to pick some of their stuff up last time, but found a purse instead lol 😛

I am so impressed with the Kashuk products lately! It’s too bad I’ve already acquired Blacktrack, Rich Ground, and Stila’s Cobalt Smudgepot, but I hope that Kashuk releases some new colors sometime. I will have to try their cream blush and eyeshadow duos sometime, though. Love the few brushes I have from the line.

By the way, I’m very pleased to see your revamped rating system that weights the different features you rate differently – obviously the product is the most important part! The 50-pt scale is great and much easier to think about. Big thumbs up!

Me too, Daphne! 🙂

I’ve always weighted product heavier, even in the past, but I’m trying to make it more transparent to others. I had just kept it out of 10 previously so it would be easy for you to be like “OK, it’s 9/10!” vs. “27/30” which is a little harder to calculate on the fly, IMO. I’m hoping this will make it clearer and justify the overall rating, too!

I love the two colours, they look so richly pigmented. I would try these if there is a Target in Canada! I have seen some really beautiful products form Sonia Kashuk that I would love to try.

Wow, that blue is amazing! It reminds me of Stila’s smudge pot in Cobalt, but these look incredible for the price! I will definitely think about these the next time I need a gel liner…

Thanks, Roxanne! It’s really the same as before, but I’m just trying to show how I calculate rather than have it more behind-the-scenes 🙂

Just wanted to say I’m really glad you’re keeping the rating system… I really love it and it gives a good wrap up to your opinion to the product IMO.

And I’ll definitely check these out… only smudge pots work on my waterline and unfortunately, there is no navey blue!

It’s all about what readers want, and even though a lot of survey comments were against the rating system, a lot of you spoke up about loving it or finding it useful. I tried to do some tweaking and making it as transparent as possible so everything is laid out in the open and hopefully will provide clarity for those who question its validity!

Any word on how these stack up against another drugstore liner, L’Oreal HIP (which I find to be really kind of dry and cakey as opposed to the actual gellike quality of Fluidline or, even moreso, the Bobbi Brown liners)?

Thanks for this review ! Every time I go to Target I go check out the Sonia Kashuk cosmetics& I’ve been curious about the (3) gel liners but I always resist . I had an adverse reaction to HIP gel liners . Think I’ll give this a try . Thanks again for your honest reviews :]

I bought the cocoa brown liner, but I am inexperienced at using gel liner. Do I need one brush to apply it and another to smudge it? I tried using my smudge brush to apply it, but I seem to get too much or too little. I am 47 and want some definition, but with softness. No dramatic eye for me! Thanks for any tips.
