Sneak Peek: Urban Decay Ammo Eyeshadow Palette (2013 Edition)

Urban Decay Ammo Eyeshadow Palette (2013 Edition) ($34.00 for 10 x 0.03 oz.) includes ten of Urban Decay’s bestselling eyeshadows. It is an update of the original Ammo palette with the reformulated version of their eyeshadows, but all of the eyeshadows in this palette are exactly the same colors in the original–just with the newer formula. It comes with a travel-sized Good Karma Shadow Brush and Eyeshadow Primer Potion (0.13 fl. oz.) instead of a sponge-tipped applicator. It is also cheaper by $4 (original was $38 and all the shadows were the same size), which is certainly unusual.

I don’t have the original Ammo palette, so I could not compare them side-by-side. I will have a full review of this shortly, but I need to conclude testing the wear of the shades, and the eight hour mark is not until later this evening. For now, here are photos and swatches–please hold any questions until I have a chance to post the review.

It will be available in January 2013 at Sephora, ULTA, select Macy’s stores and online at sephora.com, ultra.com, macys.com, beauty.com, and urbandecay.com.

I may just have to consider this… I’ve been wanting Maui Wowie for a while, and every time I went in for Polyester Bride, for some reason it was always out, like it was never restocked. For those two alone, I think the price may be worth it.

It’s just an update of a best-seller; I’m quite certain they’ll put out newer palettes, with different colors. Several of the “exclusives” in the Anniversary palette went on to become singles, or included in new palettes, and I’m sure the same will happen with Vice.

I own the original and I believe several of the colors are very different in this new formula compared to the original. Three that caught my eye are polyester bride (less white), mowie wowie (more gold, way less glitter), and mildew (more warm and gold). I hardly ever wear the palette because the fallout is so bad and it hurts my eyes. The colors are really pretty though. It’s so frustrating.

Hm… I’m not sure if they’re improved or if it’s just your lovely swatches, but the glittery shades look better than I remember them. Maui Wowie always looked like such a beautiful base colour, but the glitter in it really put me off. Now I’m tempted.

The colors look about the same as my ammo palette. Mildew looks a little warmer, but that’s it. I use my palette pretty much every day (well, plus a new sin, but that’s only because I’ve cleaned out the one in the palette). Just from the swatch, it looks like polyester bride benefited from the reformulation.

I own the original Ammo palette, and looking at these swatches, some of the reformulated shades are definitely different than the originals (Mildew and Sin stand out in particular to my eye). On the bright side, it looks like Polyester Bride may be less glitter bomb-y this time around. 🙂

I have so many of these already, though I am eager to try the newer formulation of Maui Wowie. If it has little to no fallout, I’ll be so happy but I’ll probably just buy the single pan of it.

Rich and yummy colors! Looking forward to your review. 🙂

P.S. I splurged in a major way, Christine. I found a Guerlain Wulong Meteorites through one of Neiman Marcus’s individual stores. They’re shipping it to me in a week or so. While the price point sent me into hyperventilation within 30 minutes of my order, I am also quite giddy about the idea of owning such a beautifully designed compact!

I have the old version of the Ammo palette and I love it. It’s my go to palette whenever I feel like wearing some colors instead of neutrals only. However you can still pull off several neutral looks with this same palette. <3

For comparisons, that mildew color looks completely different than the old formula, which is a more gorgeous darker, greener color, and is extremely similar to L’Oreal Golden Emerald Infallible Eyeshadow (I could call them dupes but the original Mildew is more pigmented, has no fallout, and more buttery and smooth and easier to blend out than L'Oreal's). The swatch of the new color is too yellow and brownish looking, and not nearly as attractive. Other than that, the entire new formulation seems to have less fallout than the older version. Mine has sparkles everywhere, mostly from Maui Wowie and Polyester Bride. I had a hard time using the old Polyester Bride. It's just not pigmented enough and too chalky and chunky and way too much fallout, probably the worst one within the entire palette.

The new packaging looks prettier than the older version, but only with different graphic design. The cardboard packaging, size, and shape look identical. The cardboard packaging is actually very sturdy, yet light and thin so it's very friendly to travel with. I take mine on trips and it never gave me any problems. The double sponge-tip applicator mine came with still has plastic wrappings around it — it was never used, so the eyeshadow brush the new version comes with is a nice change, and a primer, and at a cheaper price? I'll definitely pick another one up when it goes in stores.

I cannot say enough good things about Urban Decay. i wish I worked for them because honestly, I rave and rave about them like Im getting paid. Seriously, they continue to impress me with their products. I am disappointed with the L’Oreal buy-out, the newest NAKED palette and the NAKED flushed palette. They play it way too safe. I used to the palette with bold and colorful colors along side the neutrals and earth tones.

This was my second Urban Decay palette, and it’s the one I reach for the most often, more so than Naked 1 even. It’s also my go-to palette for traveling, since it’s got a mix of colours and neutrals.

Comparing my palette to your swatches, Mildew doesn’t look as richly green as it used to, and Polyester Bride doesn’t look as pigmented, but the rest look as good as or better than the originals, in my opinion.

I own the UD BOS 3 redux which contains all but four of the shades from the ammo palette, so I could never justify buying this. Plus, I own some of these shades in other palettes. But they look oh so prettyful!!!!!/

Avi Avatar

Is it bad that I got the ammo palette when it first came out and still use it? ohhh wellll, I figure (hope) powder products have a pretty indefinite shelf life, lol! But the colour combos in this palette are so handy, if UD’s fixed some of the fall-out issues will definitely be picking up another one!
