MAC x Brooke Shields Gravitas Eyeshadow Palette

Just received my order earlier this afternoon, so I’m still in the process of working through the eyeshadows for wear, but I hope you’ll enjoy this quick look featuring a couple of photos and lots of swatches. The MAC x Brooke Shields Gravitas Eyeshadow Palette ($85.00 for 0.68 oz.) was quick to sell out on launch day, but the collection will also launch at other retailers like Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s. I”ll have a full review, photos, swatches, thoughts, etc. soon, so sit tight and hold any questions for that post! I appreciate it 🙂

That’s why I’ve never even bothered to purchase it. Typographic is a million times better and it’s their matte2 formula which is WAY more pigmented. I have handwritten, blanc type and Fig. 1 from the formula and it’s such better quality than the regular mattes. Not sure why they don’t make more matte2 shades…. I heard they made them before but they discontinued a whole bunch and stopped creating new shades. Like I said, it’s what I heard.

I am so loving this palette! The mix of shades is really nice. I really wish it was around the $55 price range, though, because that would at least put it in the neighborhood of other pre-made palettes. For reference, UD Naked palettes are $90/oz and this is $125/oz. I would gladly pay the $85 for a 15-pan MAC palette if I could pick every single shade that went into the palette, but I tend to not love every shade that goes into pre-made palettes, so this just doesn’t seem like such a good deal, by comparison.

xamyx Avatar

Considering a pre-made quad is $40, and $60 if you choose your own, this is still a great deal-even if you only like 9-10. There are a few that are far too orange for my liking, but enough that I will pick this up if possible-meaning, I won’t pay crazy eBay prices!

From my experience the last 3 collectiond nords released on monday morning. If the online launch date at mac was on thurs. But you never know. Macys also launched on the Monday after for almost every collection this summer. I know that for sure because I ordered from both stores.

Some of us always use clean brushes, and when you consider all the preservatives/chemicals in makeup, the chances of anything powder going “bad” is slim to none. I have powders that are even older, and my skin has never broken out, nor have I ever had an eye infection caused by makeup.

Also, storing makeup in a dry/cool place will help it “keep”. A product kept in a bathroom, for example, will “turn” much quicker than one kept in a dark closet. Moisture/heat breed bacteria at a higher rate,

What’s with MAC adding carbon to every single palette, why can’t they add typographic or change carbon’s formula, it’s just a bad bad eyeshadow. I fell like I will be passing everything in this collection.
Thanks for the review Christine, you always help us with these collections.

I completely agree. It really bothers and frustrates me that MAC and their artists advertise it as the blackest black and a staple in their kit and yet it’s not that black and pretty patchy and chalky. I like to see everything for myself and when I first started incorporating black into my make-up I told one of the girls trying to sell it to me that I didn’t like it but I loved a lot of the other black shades or MAC will even do a limited edition shade that’s a kind of black and it will be a lot better than carbon so I’ll get that apart from my typographic. However, when people go into MAC for the first time and the artists automatically tell them they need it, they get it and then they have a bad experience.

Kimberly Avatar

When is MAC going to realize they need to get rid of Carbon? It’s just SO SO SO bad! *And it’s even more frustrating that they stick it in like every palette!* Pepper is really nice though! Hopefully it performs well and isn’t just a pretty swatch.

Kinda a boring palette for me though. Not sure what it is. There are definitely neutral palettes that make me go ooh! but not this one. This entire collection is rather blah to me actually

xamyx Avatar

Yes, it’s boring, but it’s very representative of Brooke Shields! If the shades were “flashier”, ormore vibrant, it wouldn’t be fitting. I have nothing against her, but her overall look/image is rather mundane…

Deb Avatar

Oh, there are some gorgeous shades in there. I’m so pleased. 🙂

Yeah, Carbon sucks but who cares? I’m never going to use it anyway. I’m loving Pepper, Luscious, Canter, Psyche and Pretty. Plummed looks promising and there are some old friends (Expensive Pink, Satin Taupe, Soft Brown). There are more than enough colours that I’ll really enjoy to justify the price point to me. In every palette there are at least a couple of shades I don’t reach for; I’m ok with that as long as the value is there for me on the ones I will use.

Mine will be here on Monday – can’t wait! Thanks for getting these up so quickly.

Laura_Lou Avatar

Agree! Some of the colours are so pretty and no one ever uses carbon anyways coz everyone’s probs got loads already coz they put it in every pre made palette! Can’t wait for this to be released in the UK!

Shelly Avatar

As usual, Carbon sucks. MAC, please convert all your mattes to the Matte² formula! It’s much superior. (Also: bring back the d/c’ed Matte²s!)

On the other hand, Pepper looks STUNNING. Would like to see that one added to the permanent range (or, at the very least, repromoted as a single).

Ellabeaute Avatar

Maybe I’m spoiled for choice with all the amazing fall/pending holiday collections this year, but this BS collection isn’t wowing me. I do like this gravitas palette better than the ones you reviewed previously (with the exception of Carbon which goes without saying), but with a limited budget I think I’ll be spending it elsewhere. Thank you for getting the swatches up so quickly – it’s SO helpful 🙂

Joanna Avatar

Hey Mac? Remember Typographic- it’s dark, almost black- buttery and lovely and great? Maybe you should insist on making Typographic part of every pallet instead of a sub par version of Carbon, which angers people and makes them sad.

Sarah Avatar

Not my kind of palette (not my kind of collection, really) but I can see how it would appeal to women who are older or a big fan of neutrals. It’s clear to everyone that Carbon isn’t exactly Alexander the Great, but I think most people would have a black shadow from elsewhere that they could possible use instead. I’m interested to read the review!

MichelleChefNYC Avatar

Another dud for me… way too many permanent eye shadows and the textures and pigmentation on a few of these looks pretty dismal… Another dry, patchy looking Carbon? Seriously MAC, you can’t ever seem to get it right in palette form…

Jillian Avatar

Wow, Canter, Pepper and Psyche look fantastic, although Psyche reminds me of Sumptuous Olive (with Sumptuous Olive maybe looking a bit more green). With so many permanent shades in this palette (and ones which I already own), it’s definitely not worth purchasing for me. But, I guess if the quality is there this could be good for those new to MAC, or people looking to stock up more on shades they already own and love! As most people have already mentioned, the swatches look pretty great with the exception of Carbon…

Valerie Avatar

Can’t wait for your review. I still can’t decide I want this or not. Surprisingly I don’t have any of the shades but I already own both 15x cool and warm palettes that released earlier this yr from Mac. My warm palette looks much better even though it is $15 more. What to do? What to do?

Sam Avatar

Excited for this palette, will wait for the review but it is a total buy for me since I dont have much of a MAC collection and its a great value to try some perm and some LE together. Ahh, soo many palettes so little money :S

Tangie W Avatar

Overall nice palette. LOL at the fact that everybody. Hates Carbon. It does swatch horrible and dry looking. But my Cardon once on the lids work great for me. And I would love to see more Matte2..!! That would be awesome. And stop putting so permanent shades in
Pallets.

Amanda Avatar

Aside from the unfortunate lack of pigmentation in Carbon, one of my big problems with this palette (and MAC in general!) is that you can never be sure that one shade released in different palettes or collections will ever be the same. That Satin Taupe looks nothing like the Satin Taupe single shadow that I have and love =\ I seem to recall a similar thing happening with Satin Taupe in Christmas palettes last year (or was it the year before?), as well as Stereo Rose re-release earlier this year.

impekkable Avatar

It does look like a neutral to cool palette with only a couple of warm shades. And it seems to have a good range of shades, though I’d rather have one less light, frosted shade and swap it for ‘orange’. How cool to have had Orange or Rule behind that big orange square printed on the palette!

I’m keen to see how it reviews and if it works for warm and medium skin-tones.
I’d also like to know how the permanent shades in the palette compare with the singles, along with their wear times and texture.
My main interest is whether I should go for two 4-pan custom palettes or this palette and a 4-pan one for a nicely rounded mac collection. I don’t have a single mac eyeshadow.

Tess Termulo Avatar

What happened to MAC Carbon?!?! I’m glad I ‘m not the only one who noticed it.

Although I love neutral shades, I don’t really see this palette as anything special. Some of the eyeshadows look nice, like Pepper, Shroom and Satin Taupe. But I think we can get that either by buying other brands or maybe from the single eyeshadows of MAC.

Not on my to-buy list.

Liz Avatar

SA told me a few months ago at a MAC store that these were going to all be new colors, but saw a little while ago not so. I own the colors here I like already so, despite being originally really psyched, not so much now. Does Clove resemble Uninterrupted? Thanks, Christine. It’s a nice palette though if you don’t already have a lot of these.

Lotus Avatar

Pleasantly surprising! I see this and the colors look just like all the big palettes have recently, yet these are better swatched, in terms of more consistency than half, so that’s pretty good for a great varied choice of colors to start a collection with, or add to it! I’m not too keen on it for myself but I applaude your reviews and I’m sure you’ll make the full review a pretty one! 🙂

Helene Avatar

I’ll wait for the reviews before deciding if I really wan’t this or not. I think I have dupes for some, I know I have singles of some and I really like some, so I feel very undecided right now.
I’m not even goint to mention the shadow beginning with a “C” 😀

I bought this yesterday. When the doors opened at 10 at Macy’s, they’d already sold out. APPARENTLY they sold them over the phone at 9:30 before the store even opened! One of the sweet girls there called around to the San Francisco store, and said they could sell me one (and the five other women there) if I had a Macy’s card. Thank GOD I did. Unfortunately, I was the only one. Anyhow. Now I’m waiting. ♥ I felt I needed this because, I have, essentially, NO neutrals. I’ve got things like, Electric Eel. lol. So I decided I wanted some MAC neutrals. I’d decided that my best bet would be to pick up one every pay period. THEN THEY PUT THIS TOGETHER!!! I was so happy. One, and DONE. Before I buy anything I usually check here first. I didn’t do that this time. So I had to check after to see that I’d not made a mistake. 🙂 I think it went well.
