Sneak Peek: Buxom Eyeshadow Bar Singles (x12) Photos & Swatches

BUXOM Customizable Eyeshadow Bar Palette
BUXOM Customizable Eyeshadow Bar Palette

BUXOM Eyeshadow Bar is a customizable palette system that consists of single and six-slotted palettes with 40 eyeshadows that can be inserted. I created two palettes–one brighter shades, one more neutral shades–so I can get a good feel for the range and its quality. When you purchase the six-pan palette and six eyeshadows, the total price is $40, but you can only get the discount once per order (I had to place two separate orders). Each eyeshadow pan is housed in a slim plastic container that pops into the larger palette, and they snap in and out quite easily. Full reviews to come once I finish testing these!

Thank you so much for the swatches! I am very much looking foward to the full review and hopefully a look on your pretty face. Do you think you will review the Buxom premade neutral palette? story of my life, have 1000 neutral shadows, and still want more. its a sickness i say :/

peachyrose Avatar

It’s ok, Im just glad I got to see some swatches. I have always been tempted to make myself a neutral eyeshadow palette that suits me and my skintone to a T. Unfortunately, Im not quite skilled enough so usually end up buying pre-made palettes. i still love the customizable aspect though, i think its a great idea.

🙁 Oh I’m so devastated! All ColourPop purples, that looked cool blue-Violet-y purples.. They turn warm on me! 🙁 WHAT IS THAT? A $5 eyeshadow. That’s what. 😀 Beauty Call was the only winner. I feel robbed. I’m really frustrated! I wanted periwinkles & violets, indigo violets! So never ordering again. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Christine Avatar

I don’t think they have many cool-toned purples? I can only recall Daddy and Lace off the top of my head – most of them are warm-toned! I’m not sure what you ordered offhand, but that’s too bad that they turn warm on you! Unfortunately, colors may look different from person to person, and certain types of ingredients/formulations may interact differently. I know there are a few readers who have issues with many lipsticks turning fuchsia on them.

Lotus Avatar

Ha.. They’re described in ways one would assume cool.. They look it.. It’s money waisted. Here’s what I ordered: Cowboy, Daddy, Lace, then Taco, Beauty Call, Flux, and I Heart This, on a whim for the last one.. Ok, Beauty Call is gorgeous! That kind of blue is quite difficult to find! At least on me, but it’s great! Taco, meh.. Flux has possibilities.. But not many… Cowboy is a decent pastel lavender. I have better from a LE Dior fusion. Daddy turned warmed radiant orchid on me, Lace turned a burnt merlot with heinous glitter. No, merlot is too much a complement.. More of an icky raisin. I Heart This is GORGEOUS fall out city.. TF GLITTER does it better! And I’m like.. I spent money on all that!? I have like 12 blushes & 8 highlighters left as well.. I’m hesitant to test anything. I just want to send back. I’ve never felt so negative about makeup. Now I’m stuck with it. Just a birthday bummer. I’m thinking I’ll love Hippo/Monster.. I could have gone with illamasqua Spirits quad or whatever.. Grrrrrrrrr. And after Beauty Call I thought they’d all be great. 🙁 The horror, the horror! Dare I try a lip pierced or just go for the return? They’re acceptable on unused unopened products.. Wow, it would blow to have every lipstick turn fuchsia! I’m more interested in how THAT happens. And I want to hug everyone it happens to! 🙁 The sorrows of beauty. 😉

Rachel R. Avatar

I don’t have all their purples (yet), but the ones I have are mostly warmer (pinker).

Skin chemistry can do it, too. I used to have problems with lipsticks all turning fuchsia on me, no matter how light. I don’t know if my aging skin chemistry changed the problem, or if lipsticks are getting better.

Kirsten Avatar

I got Blood and Ellarie lippies– I was hoping for two different great reds– but they look identical on me! I have not had much Colourpop luck lately.

Lotus Avatar

Oh dear, Kristin! Bad news.. Thank you for chiming in! I’ve been wondering if I just return the rest and forgo trying and I’m thinking so! What did you get?

Nancy T Avatar

Lotus, Idk whether or not you like MAC, but they DO have some gorgeous COOL toned purples! I love Indian Ink and Digit! Also love L’Oreal Infallible in Purple Priority, it is a deep, shimmery indigo purple! Gorgeous!

Kirsten Avatar

Most recently I got the two lippies mentioned above and some of the eyeshadows that have been on my list for a bit– Amaze, Desert, Cop a Feel and Hustle. I haven’t tried any of the blushes or highlighters.

I like the formulas, but I find them all very… similar in color feel. I’m not sure if I can explain it right, but it’s like when they’re making them, they take one product and just add a few drops of a different pigment to make the next. The shimmers are all the exact same shimmer, the glitters are all the exact same glitter, the colors are all the exact same intensity, etc. (within each finish, I mean– the glitters are quite different to the mattes!) I find a lot of them to be kind of interchangeable, when I think about it. It just never struck me until I got these two practically identical lippie colors. I’m not sure, but I might just get a variety of their lip pencils and be done with them.

Lotus Avatar

Geez, Kristin. That’s pretty awful to find out after buying so many! I’m so sorry! My box is still sitting there with the blushes not touched and lilies not touched. Would you encourage me to just screw it and return them? While untouched, as provisions state? And thank you. I really appreciate you sharing! 3lippies: Toucan, LBB, I Heart This.
Blushes: Holiday
Prenup
Fox
Trickery
Thumper
Pegacorn
Fruit Stand
Cheerio
Early Bird
Birthday Suit… Any worth it? I’m pretty sure I’ll love the highlighters. Monster, Hippo, Teasecske & Tasty.. Though it’s a blush on me if I open it. As well Sticky Sweet. And an I Heart This Lip pencil. Yay or nay?

Kirsten Avatar

I don’t know! I think only you can decide that for yourself. If you’re really that negative on them, maybe pick out one or two you think you’ll like to try then decide?

Nancy T Avatar

Oh no!!! I’m so sorry to hear that they chameleoned on you, Lotus! And I certainly understand how let down you must be feeling.

Lotus Avatar

Thank you, Nancy! Yes, I’m more peeved about it because I invested money that could have gone elsewhere & delivered. But I bought ColourPop. Pizzzzzzzed off. 😀 I wish you better luck! Never again for me.

Lotus Avatar

LOL! Do I like/own MAC? Let me put it this way: I have everything they’ve done since the early nineties. With backups. 😀 Still not satisfied. UD as well. I preferred the originals and may look into Dive Bar though it’s quite like Envy or UV8 or whatever I’m too lazy to go look and find its name. 😛 Indian Ink & Digit are pretty. Glad you like them! I should try that L’Oreal! I collect blue-violets. 😀

Nancy T Avatar

I just had to ask because so many people nowadays don’t care for MAC, sad isn’t it? LoL . But from one confirmed MAC addict to another, I love many of their purples, Crystal is gorgeous! UD Dive Bar is on my wishlist even though I know I must be careful not to go TOO cool-toned, but I really want it! Tonic too!

Lotus Avatar

I actually stopped following MAC years ago! (Except for Aquatic Allure) and I have no interest with anything but all the great oldies! As for dive bar and tonic. They are remakes of UD original formulas that had different names, and since I prefer the originals.. I don’t really need them. I just love Iris colors! Nothing is ever too cool a violet for me! 😀 It’s my absolute favorite color. From pastel to deep indigo Violet. 😀

Lotus Avatar

Yay! I’m too lazy to find them, ATM, but certain I do as well. I just don’t feel like digging for them. What are your periwinkle dupes? There’s never such a thing as too much periwinkle and blue-Violet! 🙂

Rachel R. Avatar

Hahaha! I know I have some periwinkles, but couldn’t tell you them off the top of my head. Stila’s Borealis duo has a periwinkle, but I think it’s bluer than Buxom’s. I know I have some from Shany, and I’m thinking one or two might be a dupe for Buxom’s. Later today I will look and see for you. They are more scarce than purples and violets, for sure. A lot of brands don’t do a good job with them.

I have an extra large Zpalette, plus three large ones filled with various violets/purples. Plus a lot of purples in their original palettes, plus loose shadows… I never remember them all.

Lotus Avatar

Oh, RACHEL!! You nailed it!!! Periwinkle is MY color! It turns me into a UNICORN! But they are so hard to find! My one favorite did not look it in the pan but on, it was the most perfect periwinkle! I do have a backup. Very old Clinique. Yes, owning all MAC pigments, I can make it, but I’m lacking energy! So I’m gritting my teeth at ColourPop for ruining my hope. Dashing my dreams. Revlon has a quad that seems to have a promising one, MUFE artist has but how it swatches.. I dunno. You & I with purples.. I swear we could cover every shade and nuance, texture, finish, and be proud! Cheers to you! Periwinkle me proud! (Still bummed) lol

Katherine T. Avatar

YESSS!!! So glad you are swatching and reviewing! I can’ wait. I LOVE customizable palettes because you can pick whatever shade you like, and you don’t have to be stuck with any duddy shadows or weird colors. And the slide out panel looks like genius!! No need to de-pot anything. And love that comes with a big mirror and applicator, since I’m always on the go. A couple of the shades look problematic (uh oh for the blue) but the rest look promising. Hey, for this price, I’m not expecting MUFE quality, but if it’s decent, I’ll be buying a couple of kits.

Melanie Avatar

This looks really great. Wish this came out before I went crazy buying too many eyeshadow palettes last year. I like how there’s room for many small shadows (the MUFE artist customizable palettes only allow for 3 max, and don’t need that much product).

Sonia Avatar

Hi Christine, I apologize if you’ve already covered this but could you recommend which MUFE shadows would work as cheek highlighters? I am aware that you have reviewed those MUFE eyeshadows that work as blushes but is there a recommendation on MUFE shadows that double up as cheek highlighters? thanks in advance!

Mariella Avatar

I’m also really eager to see your reviews, Christine. I sure hope these are good quality because I like the design of the palettes – I was a bit confused at first but it looks as though these have the double benefits of holding the shadows really securely AND being easy to change around. And, like I said earlier, how can you not like a system that makes it so totally reasonable to buy MORE rather than fewer???

Christine Avatar

What they really did right was the structure of it. I don’t have a problem with totally stripped down, pan-only systems (MAC, Makeup Geek, Inglot), but Urban Decay’s system is one of the worst — bulky palettes, bulky holder for each pan, AND effectively no incentive to buying more. This seems like a good compromise for a brand to create their own style of palette/packaging and system that works together but doesn’t get the customer on price. I was surprised they even included a dual-ended brush! They are easily removed, too, and unless you have an open palette, tweezers or a magnet are usually required with pan-only systems.

Mariella Avatar

Carli, I love Inglot’s palettes too (and the variety, so you can have one with blush and eyeshadows, etc.) but I do find the pans trick to remove. I use a magnet – sometimes the one in the lid – but you have to be careful not to damage the surface of the product and I’m often klutzy when it comes to this.

Mariella Avatar

I wonder how successful UD’s palette system has been (I see them marked down at Sephora’s site and at UD’s too, I think, which seems to indicate the idea was a flop). I’m surprised UD didn’t come out with a better system. Sephora’s eyeshadow palettes come with a little “key” – a small lifter that fits perfectly into the slot for removing the shadow pans to move them around. This one from Buxom – it looks like they really put a lot of thought into the design and how people actually use palettes and how to make it most convenient, practical, secure, unboxy, etc. I didn’t even notice the dual ended brushes til I read your comment. What a good idea.

Christine Avatar

Sephora’s key was another genius idea, because getting pans out of palettes has always been annoying in most instances (except freestyle palettes, then it’s not as difficult!). The old MUFE palettes were ridiculous – those suckers were STUCK in the palettes because the fit was that tight.

I remember being at UDHQ for these and telling them how confused I was over their pricing and system.

Nicole Avatar

Hooray! I so hope these do well! This looks really convenient to have and what a great price IF the quality is there. I love that you can interchange them. But how would one store the individuals when they are not in a palette? Do they have a lid? Or would you need to purchase a Z palette or something for them? I am getting ahead of my self! lol! I love the shades you selected!

Christine Avatar

You need to buy either the individual compact or keep the palettes on hand. They come with a bit of a plastic sleeve in their original boxes, but they aren’t designed to live on their own – so you’d need the single compact or the six-pan palette.

El Avatar

That last neutral is an excellent match for you!

I like most of the brights, particularly Wild Nights which has unexpected depth swatched. We don’t get Buxom in the UK (or I haven’t seen it, at any rate) but as these are permanent, I can have a look next time I’m in a Sephora.

zVintageFashionizta Avatar

You put together some really great palettes.
I am interested in the ready made pastel palette, I am hoping to see swatches and reviews before I make my purchase.

Wednesday Avatar

Mink Magnet and Haute Couture are stunning and the type of shadow I really like. The jetsetter matte is perfect for crease. I do not have much of one, more of a bit of a fold so I lay down a neutral like this before I put shimmer shadow on. I find it helps to create some dimension to my kinda non-existent crease which gets lost by the half hood of my eye; especially if I wear shimmer shadows alone. Really like the looks of this neutral palette…gah!

Sarah Avatar

Most of the swatches look nice, but two I really had my eye on look disappointing… The periwinkle looks a bit dry and both purple and periwinkle don’t look as pigmented as I had hoped. 🙁 Looking forward to the review though.

Kirsten Avatar

Interesting pricing scheme– the pans are really $12 ea? No incentive to buy them individually without the palette is there? So they’re stacking the deck towards a $40 purchase every time. I think I’d rather stick to the Mac pro pans.

Kirsten Avatar

You’ve got a point! I usually just buy one or two at a time so that’s how I was thinking. Overall I’m spending more, but each individual transaction is smaller and more budget friendly. Looking forward to your review and checking these out in the store anyway.

Kirsten Avatar

Oh! Also the way they phrase the pricing as a “discount” makes me wonder how long that price is going to be in effect and if they plan on raising it in the future. I am a suspicious, cynical consumer. 😉

Christine Avatar

I think it’s the same as MUFE’s system – it’s just how Sephora’s system makes it all shake out, but I don’t think it’s a limited promotion. The Buxom press release states the pricing is: $40 for 6 eyeshadows + palette; $14 for single eyeshadow + compact; and $12 for a single eyeshadow. I think on Sephora, when I put say the 6-pan palette and one single, it was discounting all of the singles one by one, so theoretically, you could just fill it with 3, but you’ll obviously have to buy another 6-pan palette to keep filling it at a discount.

Nancy T Avatar

Hmm…some of these certainly *appear* to have potential to work splendidly! And sadly, a few seem to have the potential to frustrate the living daylights out of somebody. Definitely a wait and see type of product.

Malia Avatar

Interesting, looking forward to your review also! Swatches can’t tell all, but looks like it may be some good, some not so good here…

Liz Avatar

These look great. Look forward to your trusty review. I like smaller shadows because you can get more choices. I wish MUFE made theirs smaller and less expensive for the same reason.

Michele Avatar

I wanted to pick this one up but when I checked Sephora after you posted this, all of the brights were already sold out! Still waiting for an in stock notification. 🙁
