Smashbox On Location Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio Review, Photos, Swatches

Smashbox On Location Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) includes a warm beige, dark gold, and bright teal, but the quality of the formula fell short yet again. The combination was nice in concept so it’s a shame the execution was poor.

Pool Boy
Pool Boy is a light, golden beige with warm undertones and a satiny sheen. The pigmentation was excellent, but it was incredibly powdery and mess to work with as there was quite a bit of fallout during application (even after tapping away some of the excess). It started to fade noticeably on me after six hours of wear.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to be "super-blendable" and "richly-pigmented." I found the quality to vary a lot from shade to shade, even with a trio, as some shades had soft, blendable texture and others were drier, dusty, and messy to work with and had pigmentation that sheered out or faded quickly. I wanted to like them more than I ended up after using them on the lid as I routinely felt like the brighter shades never looked quite as vibrant in practice as they did in the pan. Most of the shades were blendable and had coverage from medium to opaque with a few being sheer. They lasted anywhere from five to eight hours on me.

Gold Sunnies
Gold Sunnies is a medium-dark gold with warm brown undertones and a frosted finish. The consistency was drier and moderately powdery, which resulted in coverage that tended to sheer out too quickly when blended without a tacky base underneath it. The pigmentation started off nearly opaque, though, but it just didn’t want to adhere well to my lid (bare skin as well as over Smashbox’s own primer). It lasted for six and a half hours on me.

All the Teals
All the Teals is a bright, medium bluish-teal with subtle, cool undertones and a metallic finish. It had rich color payoff, but the trouble with the color was that it faded quite a bit when applied onto the lid; I kept trying to intensify the color again, but it kept fading to more of a washed out version of teal within a few minutes. From there, the color stayed on for a solid seven hours without getting any more faded. The texture was smooth, blendable, and wasn’t too dry or too firmly pressed in the pan.

This was another of these I had my eye on. Such a great concept overall — three coordinated shades, easy to transport packaging, all Smashbox had to do was pretty well on quality. I hope other brands take note of the opportunity.
That blue is so eye-catching but it’s not worth shelling out for a mediocre palette just for one colour (and that one just a B+). I wish it had rated a bit more highly overall.
Well, that sure is a depressing little trio! This could have been a super fun little combo, too. I’m trying to understand what in the actual heck Smashbox is *even* with these! ?
It’s pretty tough when Smashbox can’t get a gold right – this is really disappointing.
Smashbox made at least one lovely little trio ages ago, a neutralish one, I used it a lot. The new trios seems quite disappointing. A pity as they have rather pretty combos. I think they should be able to do so much better.
I have a soft spot for neutrals with a pop of teal like this. Too bad Smashbox didn’t do a better job. The eye look you did is really pretty: Adding the purple was a good call. It looks lovely.
It’s super disappointing that these trios are so bad. I really like their Cover Shot palettes. I wish they’d be more consistent.
