Thank you so much for the list! Lots of great options here! I am just wondering if you will share the list of best products for makeup beginners, who will be completely overwhelmed by all those goodies if they want to start their very first stash.

Jennifer Avatar

Hi! Your blog is amazing and I always consult your reviews before purchasing! Could you do a “top 20 best of holiday sets2016” that covers palettes gift sets etc released new for this holiday season?

Jennifer Avatar

I am so embarrassed! I should have known better-my apologies! I seriously read every single post each day. I saw and read the individual categories -can’t believe I missed that one. Like I said I should have known better as you are so on top of new products etc….shame on me! Looking forward to a new Mellon photo. It’s been one of those weeks….

kjh Avatar

Booo! Glad you can, bec each one I check for sale purposes flunks my cosdna investigation. Just ordered a Koh gen do sampler, and now it prob won’t be here on time! Your skin looks awesome in you pic. Hope your foundation is in stock. I have patience and can wait for the next sale, if nec. Dangle a sale possibility on a perm product, and I can delay gratification easily.

Myrich Avatar

I’ve already stocked my cart, every year I’m stuck buying skin care and boring stuff out of nessecity but not this Year! I’m going to buy some fun stuff:)

GK Avatar

Thank you for the advance notice! They didn’t know for sure when I was shopping a few days ago. I still can’t find a foundation or setting pressed powder that isn’t yellow undertone. Even if it’s ‘neutral’ or ‘pink’ it’s still too dark/yellow. Even the BA’s can’t find any. I know I’m pale-NW 5-10, but it should be possible. Any ideas?

GK Avatar

Thank you for the suggestions. I’ve tried all of the major brands-including ‘makeup artist’ lines. Koh Gen Do is one that I haven’t tried-none of my stores have it. Will order online-looks like 12 or 13 might be light enough. ?

kjh Avatar

Actually, 13 seems to match me, and I’m light to med with fading tan on coolish skin. You’d have to go lighter, I bet. You really ought to get the sampler direct from KGD first. Then you’d know. I love waterblend, hands down best, but flunks my cosdna search. And I flushed like a lobster, trying it on. Didn’t prevent me from getting a large sample and using it for just one night. Was still red after removal, the morning after. Oh, well. The KGD is hella more siliconey than waterblend.

Christa @perilouslypale Avatar

GK the Kat Von D Lock It Foundation in Light 42 Neutral is REALLY light. Almost white. I think it would be an amazing match for you! MAKE UP FOR EVER Water Blend also has really light shades that don’t run yellow at all if you want less coverage!

GK Avatar

Christa-Thank you for the ideas! I will look at Kat Von D when I’m at the store. I know I’ve tried it-don’t remember what color. Makeup Forever doesn’t have any that are light enough, odd since it’s a ‘makeup artist’ line. Water blend isn’t at my stores so ide have to chance online. I can do less coverage, unless it’s like Mac face & body which does nothing for me. ?

Christa @perilouslypale Avatar

The new Water Blend Shades are lighter than the old Face & Body foundation but yeah it’s very sheer. I’ll keep thinking of suggestions. The Kat Von D is REALLY pale.

Lea Avatar

I don’t know what I am on the MAC color scale, but I’m alabaster/fair with pink undertones. Asian foundations are really good for fair tones, so Koh Gen Do should be a good option. I wear Armani Maestro Glow in 5 and that has a pink undertone. My “summer” Slade is 6. The numbering system with Armani changes with the foundation finishes, so you’ll want to do a little research if you can’t buy in person. I’m a 3 in the original Maestro for example, so you can’t go by number if you find a match and switch formulations. While it won’t help you for the Sephora sale, Cle de Peau is also good with fair skin tones, but it is pricey and Sephora doesn’t carry the line.

GK Avatar

Thank you for the info! There are a lot of us that are very pale/pink undertones. Most of the major companies, including ‘makeup artist’ lines want to put us in yellow/dark colors-it’s supposedly makes us look younger! It just makes me look like a balloon head. Hope these companies get a clue soon-there’s a big marketing mistake that’s being overlooked.

Lea Avatar

Yellow certainly does not make me look younger, ha! I would like to think we’ll eventually see a lot more nuance in skin tones, but the frequency in which I still offer suggestions to others and see similar complaints on the darker skin tone spectrum make me wonder when that will be. Having enough tone options has to be practical for brands without having too many – I get that, but I would have hoped to see a bigger reduction in complaints about lack of options for women of color. How long have we known that was an issue? Armani is a good option, but be sure with lighting when you get matched. I’ve been mismatched before because of the horrible lighting. In the end I always go back to the Japanese brands though – the quality is amazing and it’s just a better match. It’s why I have never longed for the next big foundation thing. The hunt just isn’t worth it and is never better than my existing 2 options.

Jane Avatar

I’m probably not quite as pale as you, but I agree – the yellow undertones being the only one available at the pale end is very annoying. It guarantees I look masky and discolored!

Samantha Avatar

Try MatchCo foundation! You download their app and scan your skin with your phone and they send you a hydrating formula in your exact match. It was spot on for me! I’m fair (not as pale as you though), with a mix of yellow and pink undertones – truly neutral – so many foundations are too yellow for me as well!

kjh Avatar

I know I’ve already read these, but it’s nice to have this summary list to click on, for revisiting. Been overthinking this, bec most of the stuff I want for me is OOS online. Some was in stock at neighborhood little S. Bijoux on list! And if Muse does not do another twofer, dark mattes next year. Long range planning! Actually, my me list is pretty short this year.

Christine Avatar

You know, I don’t feel like I’ve tried that many new formulas this year, so I’m not sure my list would change much from last year’s – which you can find here 🙂 http://www.temptalia.com/the-best-eyeliners-for-your-holiday-wish-list-2015-edition/

Megan Avatar

Thanks for posting! I’m stocking up on Dr Jarrt BB Cream (A HG product for me). Around the holidays, they come out with value sets (usually a couple dollars more than the BB cream alone, and come with really nice deluxe skin care samples.) At 20% off, it’s a great deal. I buy a few and am set for the year. My only “gripe” is that it seems like a lot of the really good holiday sets are already sold out- I’m glad I grabbed some early instead of waiting for the sale.

Anna Avatar

In terms of guides, I know you did one that is best eyeshadows, but it’s listing entire brands which sell singles. Maybe a list of your favorite singles (the exact color) across brands? Like a top 10 or 20 or something? 🙂

Michelle Avatar

Can someone help me with this? I have a JCPENNEY gift card that I was hoping to use on beauty products, so can I just go to a Sephora store inside JCPenney and tell the sales associate that I am VIB Rouge (give them my email add, etc) and ask them to enter in that 20ROUGE code?????? My understanding is that this code wouldn’t work on JCPenney website but only work in the Sephora store inside JCPenney, but I just wanted to clarify! Thanks in advance 🙂

Camila Avatar

Christine, from your experience, does the sale start at 00:01 PST? I have my eyes on a few items I’m afraid might sell out and I wonder if I should stay up until midnight to purchase them.

Thank you!

Taylor Avatar

I plan on going all out and really treating myself, (aka murdering my pocketbook)… cause I’m thinking I have to start acutane treatment for my acne still kicking at 26, so maybe that big box of masks from GlamGlow? See my rationalizing super powers?!
Angry dry skin will need the TLC. 😉

Nyx Avatar

My cart is ready. I only have one holiday item (skincare) so I am feeling confident that nothing will be out of stock when I go to purchase. I only shopped sales at sephora this year and I think my strategy worked pretty well!

Della Avatar

Hi!

Do you by chance know if VIB Rouge’s can use their code during the VIB sale too? Seems like you should be able to especially since new products, restocks, etc. will happen within that week. Thank you!

Alison Avatar

Just curious, do you know what brand of hairdryer your friend used before? I am thinking about purchasing the Dyson one but I agree with Jess that $400 (or $320 with the VIB discount) is pretty steep.

Michelle Avatar

I went all lip color! I got that Smashbox holiday lipstick too. Also the Give Me Some Lip and Liner set, the UD Vice holiday lipstick in Troublemaker, and the Bite Beauty Mauvember.

Sabrina Avatar

I ended up grabbing surratt eyeshadows in Starr, Zibeline, Brunatre and Chamois and I got Surratt blushes in Cherubic and Rose du soir! In store I got the nars lip glide set!

Joanne Avatar

It kind of makes me happy that you, as someone who gets tons of free products, still has favorites you’d go out and purchase on your own. Thanks for the guides, and happy shopping! 🙂

Jane Avatar

As disappointed as I am not to qualify for a discount code, I and very proud of myself for sticking to my low-buy! That has taken years to hew faithfully to!

Kira Avatar

Hey Christine!
I was wondering if VIB Rouge members can still use the “20VIB” discounts from Nov 11-14 as well? Or is it strictly for VIB members now? And if not, if my friend was a VIB member, could I just go with her on the first day to use the discount as well?

Denise Avatar

I had no idea event was happening and was out of the country during VIBRouge. Can I still participate during the VIB event even though I am a VIB Rouge?

Nicole Avatar

Christine (or anyone else who knows) can Rouge take advantage of VIB sales too? This is my first year as a Rouge (not sure I’m proud of that LOL) and even though the Sephora site says Rouge get “all the benefits of VIB” I wonder if that includes the sale. Thoughts?

Jackie Avatar

Just to let everyone know Sephora is overwhelmed by the vib sale .i had 3day shipping and its been a week and my order was still in process.customer service didn’t do much but say the same thing over and over.they try to make it up to me by giving me 50 points wow ?? .so just letting u guys know

Amanda Avatar

3 day shipping doesn’t mean it gets to you guarantee in 3 days. It just means during transit it should take a max of 3 days. It has nothing to do with handling or time it takes to package your order. It’s always delayed during this time of the year, this is nothing new.

Anna Avatar

Will there be a general Sephora sale that isn’t restricted? I’m want to pick up a UD Naked3 palette, Stila eyeliner and NARS concealer this holiday season and don’t want to over look a sale or promotion!
