Round-up: Makeup Geek Showstopper Creme Stains

Makeup Geek Showstopper Creme Stain
Makeup Geek Showstopper Creme Stain

Makeup Geek Showstopper Creme Stain ($12.00 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a new, limited edition formula that’s “highly pigmented that offers effortless, buildable coverage” and “long-lasting.” Highly pigmented and buildable make it confusing what the coverage actually is, since something that is buildable means that it is less pigmented but can be layered for greater coverage. The majority of shades were medium to semi-opaque in coverage, hard to build as they often pulled up the first layer and shifted color around. The formula rarely applied well; it was streaky, dried so fast that there was no time for corrections (and attempts to correct just made it worse), and clingy. I found the applicator rougher, and the packaging made it seem that sometimes it was more like I wasn’t getting enough product on the wand to even coverage half of a lip (it seemed like the opening was wiping away too much product from the doefoot applicator). For every single swatch, I had to dip and pull the wand two to three times just to get enough product to cover my lips (it was impossible to stretch out the product very far as it dried as I was spreading it). It did dry to a transfer-resistant finish, but it did not survive eating well (most liquid lipstick formulas have survived better for me). Though transfer-resistant, it remained slightly tacky for one to two hours–and if you use more than one to one and a half layers, it often lifted and separated the color.

The brand’s swatches and lip swatches showcase a seemingly opaque product, but I could not achieve opaque coverage with several shades, even trying four or five layers, and the result after five layers of product was uneven, patchy, and cakey. The wear was average–four to six hours with significant fading from the center, which is more what I’d experience with a typical lipstick and a liquid lipstick–and surprisingly, little staining, even with deeper shades. There are so many high-performing liquid lipsticks on the marketplace already, so I was caught off guard by the poor application and performance of this formula.

I know what I’m not going to buy!!! Y’know, it’s really a shame. This was a great up and coming brand until it decided to go mid-end, and also began to cut corners with poor packaging, is; leaving out sifters with sparklers, and a truly terrible design on these combined with an unpleasant formula. I would love to see MUG get back to her roots.

I don’t have anything from MUG (I simply dislike ordering online without the opportunity to try products) but I’ve been following Marlena for years and was so impressed by her integrity and “down to earth-ness” and so I was thrilled to see her line of products (starting with those eyeshadows and some pretty good brushes, IIRC) doing so well and proving how excellent products can be made available at affordable prices. It really saddens me to see what is happening to her brand (assuming it’s still “her” brand).

Same sentiments exactly Nancy. Such a bummer the direction she’s taken MUG this last year or so. I was just really getting into MUG and they started going downhill in quality and hiking prices.

Such a shame that this range completely flopped! I think it was quite a promising launch – I guess just to show how difficult making the right kind of liquid lipstick formula really is!

When the highest rated product in this range is a B- and you can’t help but think you’re doing yourself a favor by not buying MUG lately ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow the swatches looked really pretty at first. Then I kept reading and scrolling and it just went downhill from there lol. These sound horrible! I’m surprised they turned out so badly because people are always raving about the rest of her products. I just knew these would be good! This is disappointing though

I haven’t felt compelled to order a single lip product from MUG, despite a few really unique and cool shades from some of the lip lines. I really appreciate your honest reviews Christine!
