Rant & Rave: Waterproof Mascara

Share: Tell us what you love and hate about Waterproof Mascara!

my answer: Getting it off can be a total pain! It can also look dry or brittle applied. I love that it wears longer, though, and you don’t have to worry about your eyes watering.

I love my waterproof mascaras. My eyelashes are so long that waterproof is the only thing that keeps my eyelashes curled. If I curl my eyelashes and use non-waterproof, they go back straight. I just use baby oil to take off waterproof mascara. Works like a dream!

I agree & dislike the removal process – what a pain! Oil-based cleansers do the trick but it can take so long, but some can sting the eyes (Dior I’m looking at you!). I always curl my naturally straight lashes, so I love that it really helps keep the curl all day. My favourite waterproof mascara right now is the YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils, but I’m up to trying different formulas. The YSL one is pretty wet.

Removing waterproof mascara at the end of the day takes more patience than I have, so I pretty much only wear waterproof mascaras in summer. However, I do like how waterproof formulas tend to be drier, so they don’t weigh the curl down!

I get emotional at pretty much anything and while I’m rarely sobbing, most days I’ll shed at least a tear for whatever reason (I also have a tendency to cry when I laugh). Waterproof mascara is the only kind I use, but I always wake up with panda eyes.

Waterproof mascaras are the only ones I can use. I have pretty good lashes in terms of length and volume but they’re straight and no regular (as in not waterproof) mascara has ever held my curl. They are definitely harder to remove but with a good oil its not so bad but I don’t like that most higher end brands don’t have waterproof mascara versions.

And coincidentally my eye doctor tells me that my eye makeup does not run like his other female patients! He says I have the best makeup of all of his patients. He has been amazed for years (for reference, I use MAC Haute and Naughty Too Black).

My eyelashes point downwards AND I wear glasses, so waterproof mascara is the only thing I can wear because it’s the only thing that’s going to hold a curl. I also find that waterproof mascaras are so less bothersome because you don’t have to worry about them smudging or being careful about touching your eye.

For me, waterproof mascara is a necessary “evil” because without it my stick straight lashes will not hold a curl, also need it because of watery allergy eyes. At night I take it off with baby oil that has aloe in it, which helps.

I try to combine the best of both worlds. I love Aveda’s black forest mascara but you never know when a bad day at work could make you cry. I put on coats of the Aveda. I then then a coat or two of Mary Kay’s waterproof mascara on top of that and then finish off with more Aveda coats. So my eyes mostly look like the Aveda finish but the couple of Mary Kay coats give me the waterproof advantage of no smearing. The Mary Kay is the hamburger in my mascara sandwich I guess.

I take off at night with Korres makeup removing wipes (my favs) and then I use Mary Kay makeup remover. It’s one of the few that doesn’t bother my eyes when removing. I use two Mary Kay products and those are the two LOL
