I love Helena Rubinstein Feline Blacks Waterproof Mascara. The product is gorgeous, it creates stunning lashes and it really really sticks to its place

everything else I tried so far failed with flying colors

well I absolutely love the concept of waterproof mascara, especially having teary eyes… but I have to stay with non waterproof (my favorite is buxom lash)….

waterproof makes my eyelashes crunchy (reminds me of hairspray), its a pain in the BUTT to get off!, and even if I do get it off , the next day my eyelashes still have some crunch or remaining product which causes spider lashes

Katie Avatar

I have to agree with the crunching! I don’t like waterproof mascara and it’s not something I *need*. When I used to use it, I remember it flaking off into my eyes (ouch!) and my lashes would fall out in the process of taking it off. My lashes are short and stubbly enough, thanks! haha

For waterproof mascara I adore NARS Mascara in Waterproof Black Orchid. NARS doesn’t sell it anymore, but you can purchase it in the goodbyes on nars.com

Personally I swim a lot and mascara in water always seems to be a bad failure. I just go without it and curl my lashes real big and top with some clear brow gel.

i like to use waterproof over mascaras. my favorite mascaras, Dior’s Ectase and L’Oreal’s Voluminous, seem to lose their curl over time, but if i layer some Waterproof Covergirl LashBlast over them, they work tremendously better. i don’t personally like waterproof on their own because it hurts my eyelashes and is so hard to take off.

Rosie Avatar

Um non waterproof has been smudging on me lately. I don’t know what’s changed the weather isn’t too hot or humid but maybe since I’ve been getting sick for a while I’ve been warmer, haha. I’m testing out my first waterproof mascara now and will be in D.C. and N.Y.C. so maybe I’ll like it.

Rachel Avatar

I can’t do waterproof mascaras. Yes, the idea’s nice, but they irritate my eyes to no end. When your eyes are itching and watering enough that the waterproof mascara starts to come off, then what’s the point?

Ray Avatar

LASH FALLOUT! I swear my eyelashes fall out when I use waterproof mascara. I use eye makeup remover, but it seems to fall out the next day… a lash here, a lash there. I’m glad I stopped. I finally figured out what was the cause of the lashes falling out (it took 2 months to realize!). Latisse would’ve been a staple in my household!

Tracy Avatar

I tend not use waterproof mascaras often because I hate taking them off. I usually lose a couple of lashes during removal. One I don’t mind is Tarte’s Lights, Camaera, Splashes! Waterproof mascara. It’s not too hard to take off.

Alli Avatar

Well right now the waterproof mascara im using is Lancome L’ Extreme Waterproof. And it well…SUCKS. It horrible when I go in the water in flakes off and my puny lashes show.

Anyone know of a really good waterproof mascara that will STAY on?

Emilie Avatar

The only problem I have with waterproof mascara is that some are so hard to remove completely. Diorshow Blackout Waterproof(my favorite mascara of all time) is beyond hard to remove. It doesn’t flake, takes only one coat to get gorgeous lashes and doesn’t clump so it’s hard to complain about it. It’s really waterproof too which is probably why it’s hard to remove even with cleansing oil.

Jen Avatar

Girl! Waterproof mascara is sooo harsh to my lashes. I really loathe it. The ONLY time I wear this is at weddings and even then I tend to just go with falsies and no mascara instead. I don’t like crunchy, hard lashes.

elise Avatar

As I have bad allergies, my eyes always water around anything, and if I don’t wear waterproof I’m a raccoon within 5 mins.! Lancome and Diorshow always wear well on me, but as I’m on a tighter budget now, I’m using a Maybelline the Falsies w/proof–I’ve cried thru it and it stays put, washed my face and it stayed put, but went to sleep in it and it was crusted on my upper cheeks 😛 Other than that, it works o.k., you just can’t take it off, though…

Maca Avatar

I only wear wp mascara (maybelline wp define-a-lash), no regular mascara is able to hold the curler given curl on my stick straight lashes *le sigh* but it’s such a pain in the popi to get off…

Mandy Avatar

I LOVE water proof mascara! Its all I use, some get my lashes really hard but for the most part I like them… Maybe its just that my eyelashes are stronger(?) but I have never had them fall out from removing waterproof formulas. I love using estee lauder turbo lash (by itself) or
Paring it with covergirl lashblast fusion!

katrina Avatar

I always use waterproof mascaras just because it helps in holding my curls but it’s HARD to take off! I was wondering if u ladies could share to me a washable mascara that holds a curl? I’ve tried mac fibre lash and lash blast but it jus weighed my lashes down.

Lizz M. Avatar

Hate it! I’m sure there’s a waterproof mascara out there that works well, but I haven’t found it and every other one i’ve tried has been beyond disappointing. So I never buy waterproof mascara’s. I don’t mind a little mess under the eyes if I can fix it. I’m more worried about my liner smudging anyhow, that can be a pain.

Kajsa Avatar

Love it! Can’t wear any other because my lashes are too long and catch the skin = raccoon eyes..
I always get spider eyes with regular, plus my eyes tend to water when it’s cold or a bit too windy.
Cover girl Lash blast WP is my favorite!

lo Avatar

I won’t lie… I hate it. It never goes on without clumping on my wimpy eyelashes, and then it just feels heavy and weird. Not to mention removal; miserable, and it tends to make my lashes fall out. Generally, if I’m in an environment where I would use waterproof mascara, like the beach, it isn’t a place I would normally wear makeup anyway. I would consider splurging to find a good quality one for an important event (like a wedding), since in theory I think it’s an awesome idea.

KellyK. Avatar

i hate waterproof mascara, i can never get it to wash off, and then i wake up with racoon, puffy eyes in the morning! my hg mascara is dior show, love it! it stay put all day, even in the worst humidity and through allergy season and washes off when i want it too!

Valentine Avatar

Waterproof mascara is 1 of 3 items I never leave the house without (the other 2 are tinted lip balm and fragrance), yet I still haven’t found one I truly love. The worst I tried was Almays’s, which was so messy I STILL have smudges of it in my makeup bag and bathroom drawers and Maybelleine Full n Soft, which was sooooooo smudgy and had to reapplied and reapplied and reapplied. The closest to perfection I’ve found is L’Oreal Voluminous (a bit messy on the application) and CG Exact Lash (smudges along bottom lash line), but neither formula or brush is truly love yet.

jane Avatar

I agree- one of the three things I can’t be without (other two also lippy & perfume lol) but I have to say I have found love/HG status with L’Oreal Voluminous. Nothing else has come close, and certainly not the super expensive department store brands…not yet anyways 🙂 I have been wanting to try the YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils….

Martina Avatar

i hate waterproof mascara!!! i don’t see its utility: i don’t usually wear makeup to the sea or cry in public or what else… and if i even cry in public u can be sure that mascara will be the LAST reason because i won’t show myself to people…
and it is so difficult to wash away :-S

Yumi Avatar

I don’t really like it because it’s a pain to wash off. I get that sometimes it’s necessary but I haven’t found one that really works for me that I actually like yet.

verybecca Avatar

I used to think WP mascara was the only way to not have smudgies under my eye. Wrong. WP is precisely the kind that smudges on me. Now I use Maybelline Colossal and Chanel Exceptionnel on humid days, and Rimmel Glam Eyes in the winter.

Alex Avatar

I’ve always adored the idea of waterproof makeup, but sadly the mascaras have never really worked for me. I tried many high end brands: Dior, Lancome, NARS… the list goes on. One day I finally purchased Covergirl’s Lash Blast mascara (the non-waterproof version) and it worked wonders for my lashes, though I recall it smudging a few times. I’ve been using the waterproof version ever since, and I have no complaints so far!

Marian Avatar

I must use waterproof mascara always. I have dry eye, which causes eyes to water. I love Maybelline Full n Soft waterproof. It’s not hard and crunchy and gives a lush nut natural look. Lancome Bi-Facil takes it all off easily. No qualms here!

Jasmine Avatar

I’m divided on them. I don’t like them because I feel like they’re too harsh on the lashes and hard to get off. I do like them because I go to the beach pretty regularly and it’s nice not to worry about swimming, and it’s also super nice when I want to change my makeup midday or shower and then I don’t get raccoon eyes.

Michele Avatar

I loved my waterproof Covergirl Marathon mascara and am so sad that they’ve decided to discontinue it. It held a curl like nobody’s business. I could run a marathon (haha) and swim in the ocean and my lashes remained curled, lengthened and volumized. I have not been able to find a replacement as I go through my last tube.

Michelle Avatar

Have u been able to find a replacement for marathon? I LOOOOOVED that mascara and havent been able to find anything that comes close to being as waterproof as that one. ugh and ive spent so much money on others with no luck. Its been over a year since ur comment i am hoping you have good news that you have found a mascara as good as covergirl marathon so you can tell me what it is!!

Mia Avatar

its a pain in the arse to take off!!! covergirl waterproof lashblast… i took out 3 of my eyelashes trying to get that stuff off!!! its a NIGHTMARE!

Mariah Avatar

I like them, but sometimes they tend to flake… 😛 No good. I mean, sometimes flaking is better than smudging, but I’ve had ones that left little piles of black flecks on my cheeks!! I usually just use regular mascara.

Tammy Avatar

I love that it doesn’t smudge as much as regular mascara.
I hate that it still smudges to my lower lash line and beyond and it is so much harder to take off.

Hannah Avatar

I LOVE waterproof mascara because I play tennis and I love weawring makeup when I play tennis, it just makes me feel complete! But anyway I buy the waterproof mascara of my favorite lengthening mascara, LashBlast Length. LashBlast Length is amazing, especially when its waterproof and it comes off really well. But I kinda stay away from other waterproof mascara because I HATE waterproof mascara that doesnt come off.

julie Avatar

I love waterproof mascara! Right now, I’m using MUFE Smoky Lash. Waterproof mascaras help curl my stick straight lashes and there’s no smudging, flaking and it lasts all day. I’m quite used to the removal process taking a little more time, but with Neutrogena towelettes, I really don’t have a hard time!

There is only one mascara that’s non-waterproof that doesn’t smudge, flake or budge is Bobbi Brown’s Extreme Party mascara! I highly recommend this to those gals who can’t find a good mascara. It doesn’t lengthen as much as I’d like but lashes do volumize, they feel soft and it’s easy to take off. Amazing!

Alycia Avatar

I would like to start by saying that I am obsessed with waterproof mascaras. I won’t use a lot of the regular formula mascaras because I find they flake and crumble throughout the day. My waterproof mascaras don’t seem to do that! So, on a recent trip to Sephora, I decided to try out Urban Decay’s “Big Fatty” mascara in their waterproof formula. It works, it doesn’t crumble or anything BUT… it SMELLS SO BAD!!! I couldn’t believe it. It smells like burning plastic. Honestly, it’s nauseating. I don’t find that horrid smell comes with many of the waterproof mascaras out there, but Urban Decay’s “Big Fatty” is totally noxious.

Ashley Avatar

I love it, can’t live without it. No regular (non-waterproof) mascara can hold my curl or prevent raccoon eyes. My favourite is the Maybelline Full N’ Soft mascara.

Leenie Avatar

I don’t wear water proof mascara, I have one tube that I used once and that’s because I didn’t realize that It was waterproof when I purchased It. I notice that when I try to take off the mascara some of my eye lashes came off with It.

nikki c Avatar

i prefer regular over waterproof mascara because it’s so darn hard to take off waterproof mascara and when i do, a few lashes fall out and leave patchy spots:[
i don’t have a problem with my mascara budging or running throughout the day so regular is A-OKAY for me:]

Rosanna Avatar

My favourite is Maybelline Full N’Soft Waterproof Mascara.
It’s just like the name says (full and soft) and holds a curl (I have straight lashes)!
I use Marcelle’s waterproof makeup remover for sensitive eyes (it’s awesome, never fails to get anything off, even MAC liquidlasts!)

I found a trick to remove Waterproof mascara in a way that takes it all off and no lashes falling out!

TRICK: Put an oil-based makeup remover through the diameter of a cotton pad.

Then, Roll the cotton pad over your index finger with the remover part angled at the lashes. Hold it over your lashes for a few seconds…

Sweep your index finger up your lashes like if you were putting on mascara.

This will remove mascara where it is most concentrated and the mascara residue will end up on your lids and not below your eyes (hence no racoon eyes!!!)

Hannah Avatar

Usually, its too dry for me, but if I know I’ll be in a place that can get wet, such as a beach, I’ll wear it.

I really love CoverGirl’s Exact Eyelights Waterproof.

candoo Avatar

I have yet to find a waterproof mascara that I like. All the ones that I have tried, make my lashes feel stiff and they do not give me the same effect as the regular formulas, especially those that are supposed to give volume.

Hannah Avatar

I need waterprof mascara. I can get pretty watery eyes, despitenot eign a crier, which is SO unfair. I am from London, and I have tried a lot of waterproof mascaras, but two really stick out. One is blinc, easy to get off without ruiningother makeup, not too clumpy and i would say waterproof, although it can flake. Anothe ris Natural Collection, itisonly £2, reidiculously cheap, and I am not one for cheap cosmetics, but it is amazing, full long lashes, natural but buildable, easy to get off, but very waterproof. amazing, never clumps either! LOVE IT!

thedogismine Avatar

The mascara must be waterproof, esp. during the summer months down here in the Deep South! I remove it with either coconut or olive oil.

Veronica Avatar

although I hate waterproof mascara because it’s sooo hard to take off and flakes on me, sometimes it’s needed, for those occasions I actually use Benefit’s She Laq…it makes anything waterproof from ur eyeliner to brows to mascara! Love it!

margi Avatar

i wont be trying anymore waterproof mascara as i always have a job getting it off in the end i have to pull it off my eye lashes come of with it

Susan Avatar

Have you tried Mary Kay’s extra emollient cleansing cream for removal of waterproof mascara? That has always worked beautifully for me. If I don’t have any on hand, baby oil usually does the trick also

Cecilia Avatar

I used Covergirl’s Marathon Mascara for about 20 plus years until they discontinued it. After several years of searching for my perfect mascara, Covergirl’s has finally created an equal, VOLUMEExact waterproof, it’s in maroon container. I have very oily skin, so waterproof mascara is a must. After 8 hrs, no black shadows under my eyes and my lashes looked perfect. Thank you Covergirl, I’m very happy!! :))
