Rant & Rave: Waterproof Eyeliner

Tell us what you love and hate about...

Waterproof Eyeliner

The only thing I have to complain about (and it’s not really a complaint) is that they are harder to remove, so you have to go straight to your best makeup remover. Otherwise, all raves!

I don’t use a lot of liquid eyeliners, but I have tried a lot of eyeliner pencils/gels that claim to be “waterproof” and “bulletproof” and they weren’t. My oily lids have defeated many of the top eyeliners on the market, except for a few–BH Cosmetics Party Girl, Prestige Total Intensity, Too Faced Bulletproof, and Bobbie Brown Longwear Gel

I can’t praise them enough! I have hooded lids and sensitive, watery eyes so everything that’s not waterproof immediately slides and smudges, even with primer.
I’ve tried loads of different brands and formulas, and Sephora’s waterproof pencils are the best thing that ever happened to me makeup-wise.

Because I have a monolid and my eyelids are constantly rubbing against one another, I need an eyeliner that will not budge. Otherwise, I will have raccoon eyes in a matter of minutes. I have tried waterproof gel liners, pencil liners (Urban Decay 24/7, Too Faced, Pixi), but nothing stays put for me. The only thing that works is waterproof liquid liner. I also tightline with a waterproof liquid liner that has a very fine brush tip, and I wipe off most of the excess.

Unless the eyeliner transfers onto your eyeshadow, in which case you have to remove the eyeliner, touch up at least a couple eyeshadow shades, and touch up the eyeliner. I have slightly hooded eyes, and have had this happen a lot. I find it much easier and less time consuming to use waterproof and then a good makeup remover at the end of the day.

Raves all around! I have oily skin and very oily lids so long lasting waterproof formulas are my only option. I soak my eye makeup off with coconut oil or an oil based remover, so there’s nothing extra that I’d have to do that I’m not doing already.

Rant: I’m allergic to most of the liquid ones (latex, fragrances). They can be hard to remove. With some brands, the colors are duller, there are less color choices, and/or the formula can be dry and stiff.

Rave: They’re waterproof: Good for swimming, rain, crying, watery allergy eyes, hot & sweaty days, etc. They last longer than regular eyeliners, IMO. The formulas and selections have come a long way, so there are some really nice ones out there.

Hi, Rachel! The SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Shadow & Liner and the Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof selections offer a wide variety of colors. Have you tried those? They work great for me… but I have combination skin that leans toward the drier side. I use a stiff, flat, angled brush to apply the jumbo pencils as liner. I also use the Maybelline Color Tattoo shadows as liners (along my bottom lash line) so, if those work for you as shadows, they’d also make great liners. (Pomegranate Punk is AMAZING as a liner! Since discovering it, I’ve worn it more frequently along my bottom lashes than any liner I own.)

I have one of the Sephora pencils, in Peacock, and I like it. I never thought to use Color Tattoos as liners. That’s a good idea.

Is that from the Eye Pencil To Go collection? If so, does it fade or smudge? I have Surfer Babe, described as “Peacock Blue”, and it’s one of my favorite blue liners. (I think my daughter still has it in her possession — so I need to pester her about that!)

The only peacock color I find nicer is Dolce & Gabbana’s khol liner in Peacock, but I would NEVER recommend it as it smudges easily and fades quickly. =(

I’m not sure off the top of my head. It was on sale at some point, so I threw it in my cart. lol It’s a chubbie type pencil that says “Peacock.”

Personally, I cannot do without it! ALL of eyeliners are w.p. I do not even bother with non-waterproof liners because they would NEVER hold up on my lashline or cat-eye. First off: my eyes can get watery from allergies and my lids are a bit oily and very hooded, also, Arizona is very, very hot and gets quite humid during our monsoon season, so if my liner wasn’t w.p., it would melt, smudge and run all over my face! Removal is no biggie for me, just using my aloe infused baby oil does the trick!

Have you ever tried the Milani Infinite Liquid Eyeliner? That eyeline is insane! I feel it will stay on for 72 hours even through showers. You need some oil based remover or plain oil to remove that stuff. The applicator is a little kooky but who cares when the actual product is so awesome

I hate how sometimes liquid liner dries into sort of like a strip and it will crack or peel off. Like with the urban decay 24/7 liquid liners, you can’t glue your false lashes to it because it’ll peel right off and leave an EXTREMELY NOTICEABLE skin colored line underneath all this colorful eyeshadow.

And with pencils, maybe I have sensitive eyes but, they make my eyes sort of goopy which is totally gross but it’s true

I’ve never found removal to be particularly difficult, but I always use heavy-duty eye makeup removers or coconut oil. I don’t have oily lids, and most of the time my eye makeup wears well-especially with a good primer-but on days I go to an amusement park, or it’s particularly hot/humid, I like some extra insurance.

Have yet to find one that doesn’t transfer from upper to lower waterline. I prefer a nude lower waterline and a black upper tightline.

I have nothing but love for waterproof liners. I like to do my makeup once and then not worry about it for the rest of the day. The only makeup I carry with me are lip products and a pressed powder. As for removing waterproof liner, it’s not any different from any other liner, it merely requires using a different product on the Q-Tip. =)
