Rant & Rave: Sheet Masks

Tell us what you love and hate about...

Sheet Masks

I love that you don’t have to worry about shelf life after opening, since they’re typically (always?) sold individually, and it’s always just the right amount of product going onto the face. Of course, there is more waste from single-use anything, so that’s the downside.

You can get a plastic ‘over mask’ that allows you to ‘fully function’ and wear it. Not sure I believe it. All the masks I have used have eye flaps, up or down. But I think I like the dedicated eye masks best.

I really wanted to love sheet masks since they are supposed to be so hydrating and everything, but I just don’t like the feeling of something moist is drying on my face by it’s self. I also do not like how my face gets really cold. I’ve tried a couple now, I’ve got one more to use. I’m also not super excited about how it leaves my skin. If I give myself a face massage with some random oil my face looks better then after a sheet mask. Sorry for all the ranting! Only ‘rave’ I can think of is that yeah, I guess it must be doing something good to my skin, my face does look a bit brighter and smoother right afterwards.

I love the results of a good sheet mask, but really dislike the feeling of it on my face. The cooling, dripping and slipping keep my sheet mask use to once a month or so. Not to mention I find it hard to sit long enough for it to work.

Susan Avatar

I love sheet masks. I like to sit quietly, leaning back in my chair, with one on, in silence. It’s very peaceful and sometimes I almost fall asleep. I have no waste from them because I rub any extra serum into my neck and hands.

My only beef is that as they’ve become more popular, they’ve become more expensive.

I love sheet masks! I live in a fairly dry climate and often indulge in a good Tony Moly aloe or avocado sheet mask for what I refer to as “Mask Monday”. It’s 20-30 minutes of peace and quite. The only down side is yes, the waste, but the hydration is beyond other masks I’ve tried. I also save the left over goo in a travel lotion bottle and mix it with water-based moisturizer (guess it is like adding water to a near empty soap pump, haha). I should probably start ordering them off of Amazon since they are only $1 each for $10 or so, although the catch is that you don’t get in-store rewards like a Sephora or Ulta!

As someone currently has an inventor of over 50 sheet masks, I literally squealed when I saw this title! I am sooooo obsessed with sheet masks! They are the best skin care product that I have added to my routine within the last 3 years. I do a mask almost 3-4 times a week. As some who’s face “get use to” skincare products after 5-6 months, this product is prefect for me. There was (and still is) this trend on IG where sheet masks lovers have do a challenge where they wear a sheet mask every day for a week. So I decided to join in. My skin had never looked better! It was brighter, smoother, and my pores were slightly reduced. And if you want a really good treat, stick them in the refrigerator and then apply it. It’s like magic for your face! I’m clearly way too excited about sheet masks. Lol

The ONLY downside is that some of the best sheet masks can be a little expensive. It’s honestly like trial and error.

MissJae, which sheet masks do you recommend? I would like something that hydrates really well without added perfume (natural plant and fruit extracts are ok).

Sorry that I’m so tardy for the party! Lol. My faves are anything from Leaders, Mediheal, Benton, Innisfree, and Karuna just to name a few. I get most of my masks from Meme Box, Vuty Design, and eBaby. Sometimes I also splurge on fancy masks at Sephora and Ulta. And by the way, the Sephora masks are decent.

Oh thanks so much for the recs! I see Karuna at Ulta/Sephora and Mediheal and Innisfree on Hautelook. Have always been curious about them, will need to try some. I also have a few of the Sephora masks, haven’t opened yet, but will need to this fall/winter. Thanks again!

Sheet masks are easier to clean up after- you can just peel them off and rinse or pat your face dry.
But boy are they annoying on! I find that I can’t do anything with one on my face because it just slides off, or gets in my eyes, or lifts up from my face in weird places. I guess for some they enjoy the relaxation requires for some sheet masks, because you have to sit still. But I like to multitask and prefer traditional ones.

I love sheet masks! I’ve recently became obsessed with Florapy sheet masks. They’re scented for aromatherapy benefits so that was an extra plus! They actually stay on your face since it’s not a paper sheet mask. It’s actually made from 100% coconut. I actually walk around my apartment with one on 🙂

First place I go, Temptalia. Second, Beauty Brains. As I said in my other post, I’ve never used one. Never help any allure for me. But you ladies get me thinking! So I went over to the Beauty Brains to see if they had a take on sheet masks. I found this exhange at this link — you have to scroll down past the boar bristle brush info. http://thebeautybrains.com/2016/06/are-boar-bristle-brushes-better-for-your-hair-episode-138/

Frances wants to know…I’ve recently gotten into skin care products from East Asia, mainly Korea, & sheet masks are a BIG trend over there. My question is, do they actually deliver superior hydration to the skin?

Sure, while the sheet is on your face it’s very good hydrator. These things cover a lot of surface area, they’re larger reservoirs of product and they’re quite occlusive which means they’ll trap moisture against your skin. If it’s a foil backed mask it’s even better because nothing will evaporate through that.

But… once you remove it what happens? These things don’t leave a lot of product behind. Compared to a cream or lotion a mask isn’t likely to provide much benefit after it’s removed. Of course it depends on if it contains the proper amount of an active ingredient but just from a hydration perspective masks are not the ideal delivery system. They also don’t allow your to fine tune the delivery like a cream does (you can use your fingers to apply exactly where you want it around your lips, eyes and nose.) Sheet masks aren’t that precise.

Rave – I’m a daily masker, and it helps give me that glow, and keeps some of the stronger skin care items from drying out my skin I don’t use foundation nearly as much as I used to!

Rant – US companies have insanely priced masks, and they’re made in Asia anyway. Sephora and Ultra both have insane markups. I love Taiwanese brands Naruko, My Beauty Diary, and My Scheming, which cost between $1 to $1.80 per mask. Amazon is life.

Oh, and you don’t need to lie down to mask – get the Daiso silicone cover and that mask isn’t going anywhere.

I love them! My favourite is the ‘When’ Travelmate mask, the first time I used it, it smoothed my forehead lines and left me looking really fresh. My fiancé even remarked on the difference without me saying anything! I love that you just put it on and then massage in the excess, no washing it off in the sink which takes ages. I just lean back a bit in my chair while I use my phone and let it work. The only thing I don’t like is the poor fit of sheet masks.

Rave:So many selections of ingredients, from high end hanbang through Taiwanese hydration formulas, targeted at every conceivable skincare need. They are a great solution for those with oily, but dehydrated skin. (Needs water, not oil.). Taiwan is an excellent source, see Kris below. Multi and mega packs exist, and if they are refrigerated, they do not dry out. Kose is also a popular brand, from Japan. You now know them as the parent company for Tarte. Hada Labo, MBD, and Puresa are probably most popular in my local suburban Asian marketplace. Take a look at Snow’s (Snow White and the Asian Pear) empties! Lovemore is one of her favorites. Check out Memebox for quite accessible selections. Jude Chao, who blogs as 50 shades of snail, has collaborated with Memebox. Gudetama lazy egg! Skincaretainment, oops, here we go again…
Rant: my personal reactivity to ingredients leaves out many entire brands. Big Box Beauty (S and U) are not sourcing as well as they might. Some are so goopy, that there are numerous extra apps in the pack. That type drips seriously. The fit is often sub-optimal. I believe I will get some blank masks, make a template, then develop some DIY solutions. Also will try some hydrocolloid, coconut fiber, and better fitting fibers. Might buy a mask cover, but I mask on midweek weekend, just relax. Some have actually caused comedones on my forehead, where I never break out. Jennifer: I would look into My Scheming on Amazon, for acne care. Also, check Ulta’s Korean Beauty section. They have a few that I cannot use. Most of Sephora’s are overpriced. Many are single try. It’s difficult to judge, with one try. A 10 box from Amazon would give you a better idea. I really like S’s house brand sleeping packs, esp. Pearl. So, maybe their house brand sheet masks are good, too. Again, most of them were verboten for me.
Personally, I can’t wait to go to Boston Chinatown to investigate these further, though I have fallen somewhat off the sheet mask wagon.

I’m a fan of sheet masks and probably use them the most when traveling because of the convenience. Generally I prefer the two piece masks, since you can adjust the fit better, but the bulk of sheet masks seem to be the one piece version.
