Rant & Rave: Long-Wearing Liquid Lipstick
This Week’s Topic: Long-Wearing Liquid Lipstick
Your Mission: Tell us what you love, hate, or are otherwise indifferent to about long-wearing liquid lipstick. What drives you bananas? What makes them necessary?
my answer: It’s great that they last a much longer time than most regular lipsticks, but so often, they are hard to reapply, because they wear away unevenly or flake away.
Really long-wearing lipsticks often make your lips feel and look dry , althoug there are exceptions. I personally really like the Covergirl Outlast lip colors. If your lips start feeling dry or if you get flakey bits here and there (which only happens after a very very long time with this lipstick), you can just reapply a bit of the top coat and everything gets smoothed out again and feels very comfortable.
kiss and makeup,
What covergirl outlast lip colors would you recommend? I’m looking for a MLBB in plum, mauve color.
thanks!
Rant! I never wear them. They are often overpriced, create a film that wears unevenly or flakes off, feels tacky or dry, cannot be reapplied without the previous application being completely removed, and are overall uncomfortable. They can also look strange when smiling or talking.
I’ve seen some new versions come out lately, but I’m just not interested. I’d rather have a lipstick or balm that creates a slight stain, but can easily be reapplied and worn comfortably. There are some good versions of long wear lipstick that aren’t all day wear by any means, but feel good, last a bit longer, and don’t move around. I stick with these types of formulas if I am going out to a formal event (Estee Lauder Double Wear for example).
Rant! Long wearing lipsticks smell like chemicals .. my dog won’t even give me a kiss!
I like the NYX Lip Creams. My favorite is Monte Carlo. Its soft, matte, and leaves a great stain. I haven’t had any issues with peeling and it really doesn’t have a smell to me.
Most of the time I hate them but I had really good luck with the Chanel Rouge Double Intensite. I wore it for my wedding and it was super comfortable, lasted all night (I think I touched up the gloss 1 or 2 times) and didn’t flake at all. Highly recommend it!
Meh. I liked Chanel’s Rouge Allure Lacque formula, but I’m not really interested in trying out too many variations. Honestly, I don’t find that the wear time is such a big advantage compared to the drawbacks: they tend to be drying, they wear unevenly, they’re prone to bleeding, they’re a lot trickier than regular lipstick to reapply, etc. I’ll probably get around to trying the Guerlain formula eventually and possibly the Armani one when it launches, but given the choice, I’d rather just have a good, regular lipstick.
most of the brands out there miss on the formula. i hate the flaking and the ‘film’ it creates. i heard good things about guerlain’s though.
I don’t love them, but I don’t hate them, either. I have a couple of Revlon ones that I just really loved the shade of, but I wasn’t going out of my way to buy this particular formula. I find myself always having to reapply lipstick often anyway, so if these start to look a bit patchy, reapplying is no big deal. That said, I do prefer the “2-step” formulas, like L’Oreal Infallible.
I wish Revlon would bring back the original ColorStay lipsticks, though. Those were HG for me.
I love them! Especially the ones from the line Lancôme Rouge in Love… they don’t flake or dry my lips 🙂 I hate two step formula or such.
So far, the only one I would not hesitate to purchase again would be Guerlain. It relaxes and stretches with lip movement; doesn’t feel tight whatsoever. The rest tend to dry out my lips or ball up in the most disgusting ways. Guerlain wears off in a similar fashion to regular lipstick.
Im not sure if hybrid formulas count but will state that YSL Glossy Stain work very well for me. I also recommend OCC Lip tars & Guerlain Liquid L/S but I find both drying. For those who are on a budget, I highly recommend NYX Xtreme Lip Cream.
I have a couple of Revlon ones that I know a lot of people don’t like because of the stickiness but I don’t mind, since they are super-vibrant and do actually last a long time on me. (My actual fave long-wearing lipstick is Wet n’ Wild Megalast, WnW forever). I have a couple of the OCC Lip Tars and I love the colours and the feel of them and the level of pigmentation, but they transfer like crazy and I generally don’t get more than 3-4 hours out of them; I mean, it’s not the end of the world, they don’t do the weird flaky fade of the stickier-type liquid lipsticks, but I still feel like I’m doing something wrong since every review I read for them talks about the super-long wear.
The liquid Benetint is good but not so easy to remove ! I use it mostly on the cheeks and not on my lips in fact. I need a good waterproof makeup remover that’s why.
i’ve been going up and down on liquid lipsticks – i’ve been loving shiseido’s lacquer rouge formula, i use it for both lip and cheek color. ysl glossy stains last all day on me and are super-comfortable. mufe’s aqua rouge…looks great on initially, but once i start eating, omg – it’s like the stuff just starts melting off my face in the most disgusting way :-/ hourglass’s opaque rouge seems nice, but none of the colors look really great on my complexion (nc42). stila’s stay all day liquid lipstick feels a lot like mufe’s formula – i’m just not a big fan of the texture, almost like a mousse, great staying power but wears off once it comes in contact with oils in food. i’ll most likely keep repurchasing the shiseido LL, such beautiful colors and a great luxurious texture.
I’m really not much into long wearing lip formulas because they tend to be drying and I hate the feeling (and look) of having little flakes here and there on my lips. I prefer to reapply more often than dealing with a drying formula.
I love how long they last on the lips despite them being drying but I do hate the fact that after you eat, you can’t re-apply it properly because there are left over flakes from when you first applied it. You would have to remove it all before you can re-apply
I think these things would be better if you are just going out for the night and are just having drinks rather than a whole day thing where you will have to eat at some point
Of the ones I have, I like them – I have Guerlain’s Rouge G L’Extrait, and I like that because it’s comfortable and not too drying (by the time my lips feel dry I’ve probably eaten it off and drunk a lot of water and it’s come off already). I have Shiseido Lacquer Rouge and that’s also very comfortable to wear, and MUFE Aqua Rouge surprised me with how comfortable it was, even when the gloss wore off. None of mine have had the flaking issue either, but they don’t last hours and hours like they should, so I guess it’s a trade-off.
I keep buying them and trying all of those that get raves but I haven’t found one that feels good on my lips or wears without looking flaky or “chipped” after awhile.
My latest try was Makeup Forever Aqua Rouge. Everyone is raving about this but I get the same results. I think it’s time to stop wasting my money on these.
I don’t have a lot of disposable income, so it is a big deal for me to spend $32 on a lip product, but I love YSL rouge pur couture glossy stain so much I own 3!
never dries, flakes, fades, or bleeds, but most importantly- stays shiny! i have to remove it when i’m ready bc it’s not going anywhere!!
Long wearing liquid lipstick…sounds nice but the longer wearing lipsticks can be a little dry and uncomfortable, not to mention harder to manage compared to normal lipsticks…I just use normal lipsticks and reapply if I need to.
I am not a fan. I use OCC lip tars once in a blue moon (meaning a few times since I purchased 6 months or so ago). I once in a while use a lipstain just because I own it, but I have a Kevyn Aucoin red liquid lipstick in a beautiful color that was a GWP from Barney’s NY, but have never used it because it’s so drying. I know which stick lipsticks I own last, and I am most likely to choose my Shiseido or Bobbi Brown or Revlon lipsticks which may or may not last, but most last at least awhile, and all offer beautiful SMOOTH lips. I have yet to meet a liquid lipstick that doesn’t dry out the lips, and I like stick form better anyway. If I want a liquidy product on my lips I will use gloss, alone or as a topper. If I want my lipcolor to last forever I will use lipliner, sometimes as an all-over base. And I know my Covergirl Lip Perfection lipsticks and my NARS Mexican Rose gloss pencil will last all night if I want a lipcolor to minimize any staining of my lips by red wine 😛
Oh and my synthetic-y smelling/tasting lip products get the least wear, except for the Lip Perfections–which are tolerable in taste and smell and hold special color slots in my wardrobe that would need a replacement….
I tried MUFE & hated it, very drying. I have several Guerlain Extracts & YSL’s & love them! Very hydrating, beautiful shine, beautiful colors & long wear time. What is nice with them is when your busy, I just put lip balm over my lips & still looks color of the liquid lipstick.
the chanel one is the only one I have tried and I love it. Lasts a long time and wears down to a deep stain.
In theory, they sound like everything I’m looking for in a lip product. In practice, not so much. I find them to be either sticky, kind of gooey, feather easily and in general somewhat unpleasant to wear. I am going to try some new to me products, like Hourglass and Shiseido. I recently purchased OCC lip tar and I’m still on the fence about this one.
I want to love them but rarely do.
The big question is which makeup line carries the best liquid lipstick in nude colors that neither crack or bleed? I recently grabbed Stila’s Bellissima and Lip Tar. So far so good. Being an ex MAC employee I feel like I’ve seen it all. MAC has amazing bold long wears in lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, long wear glosses in amazing colors but no color resembles Bellissima or the lightest lip tar.
