Pseudo-Look: Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3

Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3

Sometimes it can be fun just to experiment with your makeup, and you know when is a really good time to do it? Before you’re going to go to bed! After I finished photographing Urban Decay’s Naked Palette, I really wanted to do something using Gunmetal, but I wanted it to be different than just a regular ol’ smoky eye… so I thought, “Let’s try Half-Baked and Gunmetal!”

Then it started to give me this “night sky” feeling… and then I thought, “Maybe this would be really cool with silver eyeliner… I think I will try… just for fun!” Oh man, I was paying for that fun, though. My upper lash line was itching and watering so bad! I just wanted to get photos taken as soon as possible that I didn’t even realize the damage all that watering had done (removed the inner corner!). So, I ask that you excuse the missing piece of the puzzle and the bloodshot eyes!  🙁

You will need the following…

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Creep eyeshadow on the lowest third of the lid and pat across in a horizontal line (almost as if you were lining the upper lash line). Lightly blend Gunmetal eyeshadow above Creep eyeshadow to the crease with the 239. Next, apply Half Baked eyeshadow into the crease with the 226, lightly blending.  Blend Virgin eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Deviant liner on the lower lash line, and then smudge Gunmetal eyeshadow on the outer third of the lower lash line with the 219.  Apply Silverstroke fluidline on the upper lash line with the 208 brush.  Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Rose Temptation blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Rose Dentelle lipstick first, and then layer Rose Dilemma glossimer for a complementing lip.

Very pretty. I really like the idea of having a darker color on the lid and a lighter one in the crease instead of the opposite. I think it’s…edgy. LOL Good job, Christine.

Half Baked is such a vibrant color. Wore it today too 🙂 I did a smokey bronze eye (All That Glitters, Half Baked, Baked, Bourbon liner with Twice Baked on top to smoke it out). I need that Naked palette fo’ reals!! 🙂

Sarah Avatar

I like it! its not too intense but its different

Ive noticed you dont generally use eyeliner on the upper lashline. If your okay with answering why not?
DO you still purchase eyeliner?

Christine Avatar

Hey Sarah,

I actually had a little story about that at the beginning of the post! It actually seems to irritate my upper lash line and causes it to itch/water (sometimes to swell). It’s like this nasty chain reaction, because as the lash line waters, then product also waters and gets into my eyes, which all further irritates the area and makes it like a water theme park.

I don’t usually purchase liquid liner, but sometimes I can’t help it.

Sarah Avatar

Thanks for answering 🙂 I saw it but felt i had to ask because everyone else already seemed to know. I’m so sorry, that must suck especially being such the big makeup lover you are.

Christine, eyeliner does the same thing to me ! I can’t wear it for more than a second before my eyes start to itch like hell !!! The only solution I have found so far is to not wear any. Pencil, liquid, gel … all the same !!
However, I think you should know that all of your looks rock, even without liner !! You are extremely talented with makeup and no eyeliner does not change that !!

Christine Avatar

OMG, NO WAY! We are twins!

I’ve found on rare occasions something will work or seem to be manageable (maybe slightly bothersome, but I’ve managed to withstand it!), but I’ll repeat it with the same product the next time and it’s all gone to hell!

I can’t tell you… how awesome it is that I am not alone, LOL!

Nicole Avatar

Same here – it’s why I forgo eyeliner 99% of the time! Sometimes it even bothers me on my waterline and I lose half of it before I even get to work. I HATE that too.

The Itchy Red Eyes Girls. Sounds appealing to me! LOL =P

I wore mascara yesterday for 8 hours and gave me problems. But it’s odd since I’ve worn that before (L’oreal Vol.)with no issues. I guess I wore it too long this time.

Christine Avatar

It’s my eyes! Because it doesn’t matter — I’ve probably tried 30-40 different products and they all seem to do it (liquid liner seems to be the worst — I think it’s because for me, the area waters/gets irritated, but liquid liner really kills me as it gets into my eyes — again, that snowball effect!). When I do eyeshadow, I’m just not getting right between the lashes, so I think that’s why it’s fine just doing shadow – but if I try to line with shadow, then it seems to be a little more reactive. I’ve noticed that powder is the least, liquid the worst.

i always wondered why you didn’t wear eyeliner up top…your makeup is beautiful!!! i swatched rose dentelle today-i think you said in your review that it looks different on lips than on hands? on my hand it looked a little pale, not at all the perfect pink like i wanted…perhaps i’ll give it another try?

Christine Avatar

On lips, it seems to pop – did you see the swatches I did here? http://www.temptalia.com/chanel-rouge-coco-lipstick-review-photos-swatches-chintz-rose-dentelle-chalys

It seems to pick up a little more on lips! I don’t know, it seemed prettier once I put it on than on my hand, lol!

Thank you!

this is stunning! i especially love the half baked and gunmetal combination- so brilliant! i totally know how it is to want to put on makeup before bed. after i brush my teeth, i really casually sweep on some loose gold eyeshadow. hah!

Christine Avatar

That’s actually how I felt, Steph! I was like, “UGH! What happened to these close-ups?” I actually liked it a good deal in real life, and so I was disappointed in the close-ups. I DO think it looks way better in the full face photos (especially the looking down one). Boohiss!

Vickie Avatar

gorgeous look christine!

you just helped me decide that i NEED this palette. and since i dont own any urban decay shadows i figure its definitely worth the price : )

Vonvon Avatar

This is a cool look.

And yes, I also ‘glam’ up my makeup and go crazy with it right before I wash them off at night. But most of the time I don’t take any photo of them because the lighting at night is pretty bad and when I use flash, somehow the photos don’t turn out well. 🙁 But at least I got many ideas out of those experimentation!

Anna Avatar

I love Gunmetal so I’m always looking for colors to pair with it. I love it with Half Baked and Deviant eyeliner on the bottom. I’m definitely going to try this soon.

Victoria Avatar

Hey Christine! I love this look, but a kind of off topic question here: I’m going to IMATs this weekend (actually, tomorrow LOL). Any recommendations for must-haves that I should pick up?

Christine Avatar

Hey Victoria,

If you want anything from Make Up For Ever, go there first, preferably with a list, and be prepared to stand in line–also, they do sell out of a lot of shades on the first day. In fact, if you can get a friend to stand in line for you, that’s even better. Parian makes a good brush cleaner, too! I think you may be able to grab Eve Pearl makeup, and she’s such a sweetheart–definitely check her out and/or her line if you can. Sometimes MAC launches collections (like maybe In the Groove) early at IMATs, sometimes not. OCC Lip Tars sell out fast, so that’s another booth you may want to stop by sooner rather than later.

Anna Avatar

Hi Christine! First of all love the look and all your tutorials! Because of you I bought Sweet and punchy and Firecracker from MAC and really happy about that 😀
Quick question. I noticed you had some kinda of glitter fall out, so I am a little scared that some of the eyeshadows from this palette will have that problem.
Thanks!

Christine Avatar

Hi Anna,

It was pretty minor, IMO! 🙂 It could be more of using too much product on the brush than anything else. I didn’t find any of these shades too glittery — and there are some ridiculously glittery UD shades out there, but these weren’t like those!

Martha Avatar

Okay, now I know I will be adding Deviant when I order the Naked Palette – I was looking for a filler for Free Shipping anyway. That look is stunning, I definitely will be copying it!

Princess Lolli Avatar

You know, when I was looking at the close up shots I really wasn’t crazy about this look. The application is great (minus the tear damaged inner corner, we’ve all been there!), but I didn’t like the way gunmetal looked with halfbaked at all. However, the full face pics are awesome! You really look spectacular. The blush and lip are particularly gorgeous with your coloring. The blue liner makes your brown eyes pop too. Well done.

Chelsea Avatar

Very pretty! It manages to be both subdued and dramatic at the same time and it looks like it would work for several different eye colors.

Adrienne Avatar

LMAO!! Now I’m so mad at myself, I have gunmetal already and half baked and would’ve never put this lovely spin on it lol. Thanks for the gorgeous tutorial! But I’m still so getting this lol.
