Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Ripley Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.50 fl. 0z.) is described as a “blackened, antique olive-gold [with a metallic finish].” At a glance, it’s exactly what comes to my mind when I think of “black gold.” More descriptively, it’s a blackened olive base with golden olive green shimmer with a metallic finish. China Glaze Agro is slightly greener, not as metallic (smaller shimmer). Cult Nails in a Trance is less blackened, more shimmered than metallic. NARS Mash is much greener.

This polish had flawless, opaque color coverage with two coats, but it was nearly opaque in a single coat! The consistency was on the thicker side, but it didn’t have an impact on the application, as I didn’t have any issues with the polish streaking, bubbling, or pooling along the edges of the nail. It dried down rather quickly, and it had a slightly shiny finish but a top coat would give it a really glossy look–it’s more foil-like without a top coat. Despite the very metallic finish, brush strokes were just barely noticeable, and at a distance, not distinguishable. I normally get a week of wear out of OCC’s formula with no chipping and only minor tip wear.

I LOVE how so many OCC colors are opaque in one coat! (Blackboard, Echo, and Chlorophyll are, too.) This looks a lot like Butter’s “Wallis” but with a larger / more pronounced grain…which means I’ll have to buy it.

I have China Glaze Agro and it’s one of my favorite colors for Fall/Winter. It is more green, but the finish and look is quite similar. I love this kind of color.

When I saw the name “ripley” my mind automatically went to the original “Alien”, and the color couldn’t fit it’s namesake better!
