Last week, a reader reached out and asked if I’d review the reformulated Natasha Denona Star Eyeshadow Palette ($169.00 for 1.44 oz.), and the brand confirmed that there was an update made 1.5 to 2 years ago (I’m guessing near when Sunset was updated).

Diving into it deeper, I looked through the ingredient lists between the two, and I discovered–to my horror!–that plastic (PET) glitter is listed as an ingredient for all of the shimmer shades (I don’t know if it’s actually in all of them–a few it was visible in but not all of them) in the original launch. There was no plastic (PET) glitter in the current version’s ingredient list.

Nine of the 18 shades were different enough that it made more sense to categorize them as separate (new) shades. The other nine were comparable in color and finish to the original version (even if the performance, texture, payoff, etc. might differ). The Galaxia in the updated Star palette is similar to the one included in the recently-released Retro palette (which now makes sense!).

Wow, that is gorgeous… I love Orion. Do you think that the original 10 and 28 pans have also been reformulated?

Some of the shades were though, right? I remember your initial review of Nina’s Orchid and Electric Violet, which had some odd sparkle-matte-satin texture. I picked up the 28 blurple palette recently, and mine are both 100% mattes like in your updated reviews.

This is $223 in Canada which is just a lot of money. I suppose if I were a more “controlled” sort of person and this was going to be one of only 2 or 3 or maybe even 5 eyeshadow palettes I was ever going to own and it was something I would use almost every day, this would be a good purchase (there are 2 shadows in it that I’d never use – Phoenix and Electra – but even so….) but for someone like me, who is awash in eyeshadows, it’s just too much to be spending.

Yep, it would be equally as expensive in Aus too. The brand’s current palettes often run to over $200 AD – very expensive indeed. And I wouldn’t be using Phoenix and Electra either….

I kind of thought that those 2 shadows would be “non-starters” for you too, Genevieve! We almost always seem to like or dislike the same shades. Like I keep saying “twins”!

I bought this palette 1 and a half year ago, how can I know if it’s the old formula or the updated version?
Will you do a comparison post of the two versions?

Wow! This truly does look much, much better! Enough so, that I may attempt to snag it on sale. I could definitely see using this in conjunction with my Lila Palette and Mini Gold palette.

I can’t wait to see the new review on this (if there will be one)! I always love the Star palette’s color story but I never got it because I remember it got B or something grade here so it’s not worth $200 to pay a B grade palette. However, if this one is A- and above, I might end up getting the reformulated version (without the PET plastic!).

This has been on my “want” list for years now, and since the reformulation looks nice, I guess it’ll prompt me to move it from “want” to “have”. We’ll see closer to Christmas. 🙂

I have wanted this palette forever, but the price combined with the so-so reviews stopped me. I’m so glad I resisted now! I’m very interested in hearing how the reformulated shades perform.

I would have to say that overall I do love this palette – there are 3 shades I wouldn’t use: Electra, Phoenix and Vega, but the rest I would. I sincerely am pleased that there is no plastic glitter in this one.
The swatches look stunning, as do your eye looks Christine.

I have the original and it saddens me that PET was in it (I didn’t check, but wouldn’t have thought so since banned mostly everywhere even at the time. For the price though and the number of times I use it, I won’t be replacing it. I learned home to work with the palette and it was and stil is one of my overall favorites for color scheme and quality. This is good to know though should I ever catch a super sale on it. thanks!

Yeah I figured it had been redone because my glitters are fine and smooth, not chunky like you had experienced in your original review. I think this is a really nice palette; perhaps not as good as Biba or Gold but still a pretty nice workhorse if you get it on sale.

I heard that Lila that comes in a new box (purple, not white) is reformulated too. And not in a good way 🙁 Could you please find this out for us?
