NARS Single Eyeshadows Photos & Swatches

NARS Eyeshadows
NARS Eyeshadows

You’re now able to purchase pan-only versions of several of NARS Eyeshadows ($18.00 for 0.07 oz. each) from the permanent range. There are nineteen showing as available on NARS’ site, and I have eighteen to share with you. The palettes that you can purchase are available in either Large ($18.00) or Small ($14.00); these palettes have a linen-like finish but otherwise seem like moderately-thick cardboard. I am somewhat worried about the durability of the palette, as it has a book-like spine and I can see/hear it to some degree when I open the lid. The magnetic bottom holds everything in well, and I didn’t have any issues with the pans loosening within the palette. The exterior catches all dirt and debris easily (if you thought the rubber packaging was hard to keep clean, this seems nearly impossible!). You might want to consider using another freestyle palette system to hold any NARS pan products you purchase!

Marcella,
I too am from Canada. Jardin Perdu was available in Canada. It was limited edition. I purchased mine at The Bay in downtown Toronto.

Pash Avatar

I’m not surprised about feel of the palette. It looks like a large Z palette with the NARS logo on it. I expected more; maybe a durable plastic with a window would be better. I would be stoked to see a blush palette.

Some of the eye shadow swatches look disappointing as well, especially Outremer, but Persia looks amazing.

Carrie Avatar

Some of the shimmers seem okay, but yikes, those mattes! and it’s a shame that the palette is so flimsy, when companies like MUFE can put out quality palettes for only a few bucks a pop.

xamyx Avatar

Outremer is intended to be used as a “blending shadow”, and when used as such, it is quite beautiful. Bengali & Daphne are the same. They aren’t meant to be used alone, but blended through the more shimmery/softer shadows. Also, with continued use, all the shadows become easier to work with!

Bonnie Avatar

Hey Wwendy and other Bonnie! Haha 🙂
Once again, I completely 100% agree with you guys. Outremer is ridiculous and a “blending shadow” is a ridiculous concept. A sheer shadow is one thing…but this looks extremely patchy, dry and uneven even for a sheer finish. I never understand how Nars has such a humongous following.

Campos Avatar

Chaos, by UD, looks a lot like Outremer.. Only is much more pigmented! You could use it lightly on the crease or pack it on the lid. I cannot imagine building up Outremer on the lid.. It would take ages to reach a solid color!

Wednesday Avatar

I have so many of these as singles which I depotted ages ago into a custom palette. I do not seem to reach for my NARS eyeshadows at this point as the stash is frankly getting old and the older version of the singles are HUGE. My only shadow with considerable pan wear is Mekong, my all time favourite NARS shadow. Interesting to see Kamchatka, Outremer, and Sophia still suck as badly as they did in the past. Why not cash in by repackaging the same old sh*t.

Nancy T Avatar

That’s precisely what they did, it seems. Just a ripoff on their part to do this. Outreamer is truly PATHETIC!
But…. I now must have Mekong!!! And Nepal, too!

Wednesday Avatar

Mekong is one of the winners, Nancy. I have hazel eyes..my iris is khaki green with a thin ribbon of gold close to the pupil. Mekong really plays this up.. so does Night Clubbing for that matter (it’s the black with the gold shimmer). Nepal.. can’t go wrong. They do have some great shades 😀

Nancy T Avatar

I did see where I can get the middle out of an empty Elf quad, so yes indeed, I intend to buy those two shades in particular and put them in a repurposed Elf palette! So great to hear that these are green-hazel eye friendly, because I have the multi-color iris thing going on, too. Teal-green outer edge, lt.green next, with a lot of gold flecking near the pupil.

Vanessa Avatar

I was really interested in some of the colours in the initial photos but, man, the swatches of all the non-neutrals that caught my eye are less than stellar… A bit disappointing!

markiebamboo Avatar

Yes. I was excited about this at first as I hate the rubber packaging NARS uses and I have heard great things about some of their shadows. Seeing these swatches forget it. You’re better off buying your makeup in the toy section at the 99 cent store these days with some of the foolishness that some of these high end companies are putting out these days. Oh well. MUFE it is! People, if you’re looking for great shadows, just get some MUFE Artist Shadows.

Katherine T. Avatar

The mattes look so dry and patchy, some look completely awful. That Outremer (the blue) looks like an F, reminds me of Dear Daniel from the Hello Kitty palette. The shimmers look ok, but dupe-able. The only one that looks interesting is Night Porter, but I probably have dupes for it.

Nancy T Avatar

I agree! Even the ones I do like that look really good, I most likely have dupes for, except Mekong and Nepal. I wonder if I can do something to one of my empty Elf quad palettes to make it hold just those two shades….hmmmmm ?

Aditi Avatar

Whoa, some of those swatches look pretty bad. I like some of the shades, especially Persia and New York, but I’m going to have to find dupes for them. It’s also too bad to hear about the palette itself, but I suppose they’re priced similarly to Z palettes (which are also made of the same material, if I’m not mistaken?)

Campos Avatar

Girl, Persia and New York are exactly the ones I have my eyes on right now! But they’re so expensive… 🙁 I believe Red Brick, by Mac, is similar to Persia. Now for New York, I’m not sure..

xamyx Avatar

I’m on the fence with these palettes… While I’ve been wanting to depot my NARS stash, I haven’t been able to find a palette that would hold a lot, and in a uniform manner; while these do, I’m not thrilled with the idea of cardboard.

Campos Avatar

Some of these shades look fantastic, others quite disappointing, like Outremer or Kamchatka! I was on the fence about this pallet. I prefer much more the original packaging with the handy little mirror. The price difference between them made me hesitate, though. But a cardboard like pallet, with no mirror and a high tendency to sticking dirt? I’ll go for the original individual packaging! 🙂

Nancy T Avatar

Well, I *was* all excited for these, that is until I saw the swatches. So disappointing that most of the matte shades look abysmal in their application! Yeesh! However, some of the shimmery ones look fantastic though, like Nepal, Mekong and Goldfinger. For mattes, New York, Persia and Biarritz all look smooth and non-patchy.

Rachel R. Avatar

It looks like quite a mixed bag, unless some shades are meant to be sheerer when blended out. Persia is gorgeous. Night Porter, Goldfinger and Fathom look as good as the ones I own.

Rebecca Avatar

Just as an FYI to anyone depotting their NARS stash to put into the new palettes – all of the powder shadows will stick to the magnetized pan, but none of the cream shadows will. I had to order metal stickers from Z-palette to get them to hold. At least…I hope they’ll hold since the stickers haven’t arrived yet.

El Avatar

Mekong and Persia are the only ones that potentially appeal. The mattes look so bad! The swatch of Outremer makes me very grateful for the existence of MAC Atlantic Blue.

And that palette is horrific! Thank goodness for my MUFE extra large black metal magnetised palette. I got it at Guru Makeup Emporium (UK pro makeup store open to public); don’t know if anywhere in the US or Canada carries it. The description of the four sizes from the Guru site:
Small Palette holds the equivilent [sic] 4 Artist Shadows with or without the 4 Artist Shadow insert
Medium Palette holds the equivilent [sic] 12 Artist Shadows or 6 with the Artist Shadow insert
Large Palette holds the equivilent [sic] 18 Artist Shadows or 10 with the Artist Shadow insert
Extra Large Palette holds the equivilent [sic] of 28 Artist Shadows or 18 with the Artist Shadow insert

I didn’t bother with the insert. :+)

Bonnie Avatar

Some of these are scarily bad. I was excited about the Nars customizable palette thing, but not so much anymore. If they made the dual intensity shadows for this…that would be another story. I already have that narcissist palette, but I would love to buy a few of the other shades of it for less and stick them in a z palette with my new MUG shadows that are on their way! 🙂

BeckBeck Avatar

Wow, I’m surprised at how many of the mattes swatch so much sheerer/lighter than you’d think from the product photo. The only swatch that really looks like you’d expect it to from the pan is Mekong.
