NARS Lost Coast Eyeshadow Duo Review, Photos, Swatches

NARS Lost Coast Eyeshadow Duo ($34.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a new, limited edition duo for summer. It’s an interesting mix of shades, but they do work together. One of my favorite aspects to trying out a NARS duo is seeing how the two work together, because you can discover combinations you never thought about before. I was less enamored with this duo as I was Tropical Princess, as the texture was more powdery in both shades here. The left side wasn’t as powdery as the right side, and the left side still applied more smoothly, evenly, and had better color payoff than the right side. I found the right side to be powdery, a little chalky, and a shade that really needs a base underneath to help it hold. The left side lasted for almost eight hours, while the right side was noticeably faded after six hours.

Lost Coast #1 is described as a “golden pewter.” It’s a warm-toned pewter with a bronzy gold sheen and a cooler, taupe-ish color underneath. It had a frosted finish, while the texture was somewhat powdery, though soft and blendable. theBalm #19 (P, $6.50) is very similar. bareMinerals Golden Pear (LE, $14.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Derailed (LE, $18.00) is darker. Dior Constellation (864) #2 (LE) is lighter. MAC Arctic Grey (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Lost Coast #2 is described as a “lilac snow.” It’s a light, pink-toned lavender with a satin finish–matte with a soft shimmer-sheen. It had so-so color payoff, but it was quick to sheer out as the texture was drier, more powdery, so it just didn’t bind together or stick well to the skin. I highly recommend using a primer or cream eyeshadow base underneath this to get better color payoff and to avoid it looking dry/powdery on the skin. MAC Digit (P, $15.00) is cooler-toned, lighter. Inglot #346 (P, $6.00) is slightly darker, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Oh!

The first shade was just such a WONDERFUL, pigmented, frosted taupe and I kept scrolling down, excitement in momentum, and wow. The pastel lilac fell short.

Matte pastels usually come off chalky and a little harsh on the eyes. Sigh. If only.

Bummer about how the right shade performs, as I really like the pewter side 🙁 Good thing I have the Rainy Season quad, though Arctic Grey seems to swatch much greyer on me.

Gasp! I love this! I actually like how soft the lilac is – could always bump it up a few notches with a purple base underneath for more punch. I really think I need to add this to my list. Do you know if it only be available on Nars’ website or if Sephora will get it?

Hey, Christine. Every time I go to a page on your website now, my anti virus freaks out and says that it is a malicious site, and that the threat has been removed. It has never done that before. I’m wondering if this has been happening to others for the last 3 days or so? I’m just concerned that maybe someone messed with your website. I use AVG. This is only happening on your website.

I was SO hoping this would be better as I actually like the colour in this duo better than those in the other one (can’t recall the name of it). Oh well, I guess it’ll save me some loonies! Christine, is the lighter shade similar to MAC Patina? They look quite a bit alike in the photos. In any case, it seems I have several reasonable dupes for that side and probably a few very close to the purple side, though more pigmented.

I like the look you did with this pair, and they do feel nice and fresh and srping-y, but this duo is kind of stuck playing the dowdy cousin next to Tropical Princess! :-S

Still, these shades have a dreamy quality that works with the name quite well – it’s a shame they didn’t perform better, because I think that would have helped this duo stand out.

Although I’m a bit disappointed by this duo’s performance, I think it’s fair to say that it’s a fantastic color combo – which makes the dupe list very helpful 😉 I feel that Nars is the one brand that has color-combining down to a science, just looking at their duos is a pleasure for me.

The pewter shades seem to be very similar to the darker colour in Vent Glace from NARS. It does not look like a total dupe, since Lost Cost #1 appears a touch lighter and “mossier”, but on lids it probably be identical. I think I’m covered. Thank you for this post, as always!
