NARS Dolomites Eyeshadow Duo ($35.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a warm-toned set of hues from NARS’ upcoming fall collection, which launches online July 15th on NARS (everywhere else on August 1st). This is another limited edition duo (like Jardin Perdu), and the texture, again, was reminiscent of Kauai, with its really dense, buttery feeling. Dolomites works particularly well together for a quick eye that needs no other products to complete (I don’t find all NARS’ duos to be as naturally complementary).

Dolomites (Left) is described as a “shiny rose quartz.” It’s a muted, medium plum with warm, pink undertones and a metallic sheen. It had decent to good color payoff, but it’s a shade that works better built up or applied with a slightly dampened brush to really sing. The texture feels soft, almost creamy, and very smooth (not powdery or loose at all). On me, the color stayed true for eight and a half hours before fading. Sleek MakeUP Eve’s Kiss (P, $9.99) is less metallic. MAC Great Beyond #1 (LE, $21.00) is darker, less shimmery. bareMinerals Violet Spell (LE, $14.00) is less shimmery. Makeup Geek Twilight (P, $5.99) is less shimmery. MAC Performance Art (LE, $15.00) is more golden. MAC Daylight (LE, $21.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Dolomites (Right) is described as a “chocolate.” It’s a medium-dark, red-toned brown with a satiny shimmer over a mostly matte finish. The texture was incredibly soft and finely-milled, but this shade was on the powdery side, so you’ll want to use a lighter touch with it when grabbing the color or tap off excess prior to applying it to the eyelid. It had really nice pigmentation, though, and it wore well for nine hours before showing signs of fading. LORAC Untamed (P) is lighter, less red. Dior Sundeck #5 (LE) is darker. Divergent Burnt Mahogany (LE) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Flora (P, $9.99) is more muted. MAC Dark Brew (P, $15.00) is less red. NARS Naiade (P) is much lighter. Inglot #122R Bottom (P, $6.00) is warmer. NARS Surabaya #1 (P, $24.00) is very similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Even though I don’t own any of the NARS duos I love seeing them because sometimes they have really interesting color combos that I wouldn’t have paired together myself necessarily. I just look for similar colors in my collection and to get a similar effect!

I like how evocative Nars names are… The Dolomites mountains are famous because of how they become pink-tinged at twilight 😉

Reminds me so much of one of the old too faced duos. The colours are right up my alley but I have dupes of them in some form or the other so I can safely pass on this. Yaay lol. Probably the first item that Ive been able to say that about in the past few days…phew!!

This is so pretty ( Neapolitan ice cream – yummy). I really appreciate your dupes Christine. Since I have Surabaya, I’ll use that and pair with another pink e/s from my collection. A pink from my Vice 2 palette or my Mac Rose eyeshadow ( a favorite). I’m really loving soft pink eyeshadow, brown-pink lips and nude pink nails this summer.

I’ve been looking for a dupe for Bobbi Brown’s Twilight eyeshadow from the Desert Twilight palette from Fall of 2012. Do you think this is it? Any other suggestions? They suggested their Rose Gold shade, but it is way too light and pink. I have the Lorac Unzipped palette, I’m hoping one of those may do the trick. My biiggest makeup mistake was not buying doubles of that palette and bronzer/blush. But by the time I realized how much I loved the shades on me, they were gone. I didn’t make the same mistake with MAC;s Sharon and Kelley Osbourne collection. I’m not a big fan of their limited edition collections, but Sharon’s collection was the perfect collection of golden browns, great for redheads, that I doubled on the lip products, and am trying to decide if doubling up on the eye palette is a good idea. New ones come out all the time that are tempting, but since I’ve never found dupes for the desert twilight collection, I don’t want to make the same mistake twice! Do you buy back ups of limited edition products that you love, or do you own and receive so much makeup that it is not necessary?

Christine Avatar

It’s very, very, very rare that I would purchase a back up at this point. If it’s a product that you love and use a few times a week, it would be worth considering a back up while you could. It seems like this could be similar to Twilight, but I am not sure – this might run less pink, more red.

In general, though, by the time I finish even a much-loved favorite, there are always new and shinier things to try, so for me, I’ve let go of the idea of back-ups. There are certainly exceptions, but the rule is to avoid it!

If you like NARS shadows, you can try pairing Coconut Grove & Ondine, which may give you a similar “feel”. Both are permanent singles, and are easy to find at most (if not all) counters/stores. Cairo, Nepal, & Ashes to Ashes may be worth a look, as well!

This is also a very nice duo. I will take a good look at it at the counter, I think I might have to get two NARS duos this fall.
