NARS Bouthan Eyeshadow Duo
NARS Spring 2013: Bouthan
NARS Bouthan Eyeshadow Duo ($34.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as “soft pink tulle” and “bright pink with gold shimmer.” It’s new for spring, but it is being added to the permanent shade range. This duo was also the normal 0.14 oz. in size.
The light pink shade is a soft, pastel pink with neutral-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff but was slightly powdery. MAC Young Venus is very frosty. Dolce & Gabbana Cinnamon #1 is slightly darker and has a pearly finish. MAC Sugar Snack is pinker/darker. bareMinerals Giddy is comparable. MAC Pen ‘n’ Pink is very similar.
The darker pink shade is a medium pink with gold sparkle over a matte base. It has slightly warm undertones, and it almost looks like a strawberry pink to me. It had so-so pigmentation, and it was also powdery, so it readily sheered out. It is best applied patted on and then minimally blended. The gold sparkle doesn’t seem to stick or bind with the pink hue, so it ended up mostly underneath my eye–it’s not loaded with sparkle like the micro-glitter shades are, though. There weren’t any shades that really came close to this one that I could think of. Guerlain Terra Azzurra #2 is much, much darker. Wet ‘n’ Wild Bright Idea #3 is rosier, darker, and shimmery.
Both shades were powdery, so they ended up having slightly sheerer color payoff than true-to-pan color would be. When I wore these two shades together, they lasted right around seven hours, but there was some minor fading at that point and then more noticeable fading after eight hours.

I love the way it looks in the pan, but I can’t see myself wearing them. I also have several pink shadows in my stash I don’t use… This duo seems a bit out of place in the collection; while everything else looks as if they can span a broad range of skintones, this is the one piece that seems so limiting.
Pinks aren’t really my thing… I have too many of them that I don’t already use.
Do you think since the pigmentation isn’t very bright, it would work well for someone with fair skin, like myself?
I think it depends more on the look you’re going for – if you want really soft, barely-there color, sure!
There are SOOO many pinks being released. It’s interesting how brands will release the same color or product type at the same time. Pink isn’t my favorite for eyeshadow and I’ve got tons of blushes that could double as a shadow.
I’m really disappointed that these shadows didn’t test very well. I was really looking forward to this duo. Oh well, thanks for the review Christine.
Is this with or without the primer? Because I feel like the primer makes all the difference with the lighter shades
Hi Stephanie!
I test with and without primer, because NARS eyeshadows are marketed as being able to be worn alone (and to that end, NARS didn’t have an eyeshadow primer in their range for awhile). I actually found that this was better without primer – probably due in part to the lighter shades adhering better to the natural skin and any of its oils vs. NARS’ primer, which gives a very smooth, but dry, finish.
Darn! I had hopes on this one. I will check out the bareMinerals one that you mentioned.
Darn! I looks BEAUTIFUL in the pan 🙁
NARS! Get it together!!
Oh, I really wanted to like this 🙁
In the pan, each color looks gorgeous. I wish they each had better pigmentation. These are colors I would have loved to purchase from NARS.
I’m wearing this duo right now and I’m loving the colors.
