Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows (Part 1)

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) are a cream/gel eyeshadow that’s supposed to yield 24-hour wear without creasing or fading and have intense color payoff. There are currently ten shades in total, with five being reviewed in this post.

  • Audacious Asphalt is a brownish silver with a shimmery, metallic finish. It was almost pewter-like. It reminded me of Inglot #444.
  • Bad to the Bronze is a subtly warmed-up bronze with a smooth, metallic finish and sheen. It’s very opaque with little product. It’s similar to Urban Decay Suspect, which is a touch lighter. Make Up For Ever #15 is darker and more red-toned. Inglot #406 is slightly more golden. The color is reminiscent of MAC Genuine Treasure, but the texture is very, very different. From this old swatch that I have (I don’t have it any more), MAC Indianwood is warmer, a little more orange.
  • Bold Gold is a shimmery, medium-dark gold. It’s one of the more shimmery shades, so it’s not quite as smooth and not fully opaque but is buildable. Make Up For Ever #11 is similar in color but smoother–more metallic in finish than shimmery. Urban Decay Rush is browner.
  • Edgy Emerald is an aqua-teal with a shimmery finish. It is nearly opaque on the lids without having to build up the color, and it works well as an eyeliner, too. NYX Seafoam Green is similar but a touch darker. MAC Shimmermoss is slightly bluer. MAC Aquadisiac is similar. Urban Decay Minx is similar, perhaps just the tiniest bit bluer.
  • Fierce & Tangy is a brightened tangerine orange with a satiny finish. It applies so, so smoothly; this is one of the best shades in terms of texture and color payoff. I couldn’t think of a dupe for this shade. Make Up For Ever #10 is much darker, more of a true orange.

I tested several shades (though not every single shade individually) from the range for twelve to sixteen hours. I wore each of them alone, not with other products, primers, or eyeshadows. I didn’t experience any budging, creasing, fading, or smudging. The shades I specifically tested were: Audacious Asphalt, Bad to the Bronze, Edgy Emerald, Fierce & Tangy, Painted Purple, and Tough as Taupe.  These can also be used as an eyeshadow base or as an eyeliner, depending on what you’re looking for.   I tried these as bases and liners, and they worked and performed well.  It’s always nice when a cream eyeshadow can double as a cream eyeliner!

I didn’t test these for a full 24-hours, because I am really, really loathe to wear makeup for that long. Adverse reactions can be a job hazard from product tester, and the last time I did that kind of test, my eyes paid for it for another few days (dry, flaking), so I’m not keen on doing it again 🙁 I apologize in advance. I think that a product that wears as long as sixteen hours without any issues is likely to continue in the same vein.

The consistency is creamy and smooth, though some shades are smoother than others due to the finish (the more shimmery ones are less smooth, while the more matte ones are the smoothest). The texture is similar to MAC Paint Pots (Make Up For Ever Aqua Creams aren’t quite as thick and dry down faster). These dry down quick but too quickly, so there is some time to work, but if you want to blend out the edges really seamlessly, I would recommend working on one eye at a time.  Color payoff varies from good to great over these five shades, with Audacious Asphalt and Bold Gold being buildable but not completely opaque in one go.  The other three are nearly opaque without layering.

What’s kind of funny about the range is the lack of really neutral eyeshadows. There are lots of fun, colorful shades, but there is a lack of one-and-done eyeshadows. That’s usually not how a brand launches a product like this, but hopefully with the success of the initial ten, they’ll roll out some softer/lighter shades that will work great for those mornings you have five minutes or less to put on your makeup.

Each shade is housed in a heavy glass jar with a screw-on black lid.  The glass gives it more heft, so it doesn’t feel cheap when you hold it, but it’s not the most travel-friendly as a result (and it is more breakable–one of mine arrived with a superficial crack on the bottom).  Also, be careful if you have more than one open, because the product’s name is actually on the lid, not the bottom of the jar, so if you can easily mix them up.  Thankfully, the shade range is pretty diverse and there aren’t shades that look too similar to each other, so it is possible to look them up if you forgot.

I have been eyeing these for a while. I’ve seen other reviews and now i want to get them! I didn’t know they were limited edition. that sucks :/ now I gotta make sure I get the ASAP. And maybe stock up :p

Hinahon Avatar

Do you have by any chance the number of the colors? it seems that we have them in France but the names aren’t the same, though they have numbers.
Thanks a lot 😀

This week I bought fierce and tangy and I have used with mac off the page eyeshadow and paparazshe eyeshadow, and I love it. The color payoff and texture are so easy to work with. I knew that you were going to make a review, I am so glad. I am looking foward to compare one of them with mac idyllic paint pot. Thank you Christine.

Agata Avatar

I bought the Pomegranate Punk at Ulta yesterday, just wanted one to try it out. But after your review I am really excited to use it today. I love the orange color too!

Audrey Avatar

Love these! I’ve been using ’em as eyeshadow base. I totally agree about the lack of neutral colours, though – I bought the white and taupe ones, but I hope they come out with some more neutrals in the future.

Carolina Teodózio Avatar

Hi Christine!
Do you think that the “Bad to the Bronze” shade is somehow similar to Mac’s paint pot Constructivist?
Thank you!

romina Avatar

I really love them… I had them for about 3 weeks now… and that’s the best things I ever got form Maybelline… I wish for them to come back next season with new colors. I will buy them all again. By the way, my eyelids are very oily so they won’t crease if you use UDPP.

Cecilia Avatar

I have been using tough as taupe. The first time I used it, I didn’t use udpp and it creased (I have oily lids). The second time, I used udpp and tough as taupe held up a little better; small crease in the inner corner. It may be the color I used. Tough as taupe is creamier and more matte than the other shades. I’ll see if I run into similar issues with the other colors

Amy Avatar

My Tough As Taupe creased w/in 2 hours & faded to nothing w/in 3. I have oily lids too and have to use a primer but I hate to do that with a product that’s designed to be low maintenance. Sadly, I’m giving this to my sister & am sticking to UDPP w/ powder shadow.

Ice Queen Avatar

I am not usually a big fan of Maybelline products; I just don’t have very good results from them but I really like these shadows. I own a few and plan to get a couple more colours. I do wish that they would release some light, neutral shades. A skin tone would be nice to use as a neutral shadow base, like a MAC Paint Pot.

Z Avatar

Thank you for the review and swatches! I was lucky enough to find this display while the store associates were putting it up. So I got first dibs on all the colors that struck my fancy. With the exception of Painted Purple, I have loved each one of the four and look forward to getting more. After seeing the swatch of the Bronze color, which I don’t have, I might exchange Painted for it. 😀

Jenny Avatar

You mention testing Tough as Taupe in your review but I don’t see it in the swatches. Are you going to do a seperate post like you did with the purple one or did you just not photograph that one?

Stephanie S. Avatar

I was afraid Bold Gold would be a dupe of MAC Cash Flow, but it looks like it’s a much warmer gold. I also don’t think Audacious Asphalt is a dupe of MUFE Aqua Cream #12 like I thought it would be. I already own Bad to the Bronze and Fierce & Tangy. The pigmentation is really good, but both creased on me after about 10-12 hours without a shadow primer underneath. However, I have oily lids & deep-set eyes so everything creases on me.

Alexandria Avatar

That blue shade looks a lot like Flipside from Urban decay, I think I’ve found a colourbase for it 🙂

I’m really glad you reviewed these, drugstore brands seem to be stepping up their game lately in certain aspects. Can’t wait to pick these up.

KRISTANNA Avatar

I agree with the neutral comment but I do think tough as taupe and the bronze shade could stand up as a one and done neutral for the morning. Christine, do you think the orange one could be blended sheerly enough to be used as an undereye corrector for darker skin tones ?

Martha Avatar

I’m glad you reviewed this. Mostly as you said, it’s ” a have no to much time in the mornig for make up product” and personally I think it has a decent quality.

Amy Avatar

I actually love how they have funner more colorful shades cuz I gravitate towards them the most<3 I hope they come out with more colorful and bright shades (mint please please please)<3 and even softer shades like a pretty pale shimmery pink.

Lauren Avatar

I was just checking to see what Christine says about creasing on this brand… I was at CVS and saw this and snagged the gold color and I’m wearing it today and OMG it’s creased like crazy! I have UDPP on underneath and I never have this issue. I maybe used too much of the shadow? Not sure, but my eyes looked great when I left the house (I used UD Smog and Darkhourse in the crease), but now I’m not loving it due to creasing.

Mai Avatar

I would imagine with the amount of shadows you sometime review, your eyes would get pretty irritated if you actually tried them all on your eyes! lol

LH Avatar

I love love these I have three and intend on owning all of them. My eyelids are very oily and cream products with or with out an eye primer crease on me so after having good luck with these for half a day I did decided to try and wear them for 24 hrs to put it to the test and I have to say they stayed on.

Michele bingham Avatar

My daughter had creasing with only one color, “Edgy Emerald”. She wore it to an indoor concert, and had creasing all through the evening. Primer used was UD, used Edgy Emerald as a base, then applied Mac shadows on top. For some reason this color was hard to swatch, but could be built up…maybe the extra layer caused the creasing!? The other colors have not creased and wear atleast 10-14 hours for her. Absolutely beautiful. Anyone else have problems with this color? Thanks for a great review.

Unspotted Avatar

I love these. I bought Pomegranate Punk and Fierce and Tangy and I love them both. They look beautiful against my dark skin, especially Fierce and Tangy.
I also think they are really similar so MAC’s Paint Pots… Seeing that the Paint Pots cost a little over 20$ I’d say Maybelline wins. They just should come up with a few neutral base-y shades!

Veronica Avatar

I actually grabbed the taupe shade (not listed here) from this collection last week on a whim. Nice to know they reviewed well!

I agree that I was a little surprised to see so many bright colors. If they release a few more, I’m hoping for more matte shades in subtler colors.

Barbara Avatar

My local Ulta was sold out of these, but Walgreens had them and is running the same promotion currently – $6.99 each and buy one get one $50% off, so I picked up all of the shades there. I almost didn’t get ‘Fierce & Tangy’ since I’m sure I won’t use it very often, but considering that it only ended up being $3.50 I justified it by telling myself that if I use it a few times it will pay for itself.

I know you said that they don’t have any “one and done” shades, but I’ve been pretty lazy this weekend and wore the ‘Too Cool’, ‘Bold Gold’, and ‘Bad to the Bronze’ shades each by themselves. I did a sheerer layer as just a wash of color over the lid and didn’t even bother with a crease color or anything and was rather pleased with the effect. This is how I often use MAC’s Paint Pots, and am so happy to have a few inexpensive alternatives to switch up with my old favorites. I have found, like you, that the application, consistency, and wear of these cream shadows are similar in quality to the Paint Pots for just a fraction of the cost! I hope Maybelline comes out with more shades soon, as this product seems to be a hit and is flying off the shelves, at least in my neck of the woods.

DarkGlamour17 Avatar

I bought Edgy Emerald and wore it for 14 hours no creasing or fading. 🙂 Granted I had a primer underneath and a little bit of powder eyeshadow on top. I was surprised how smooth it went on and how bulidable it is. It’s a nice little product for 6 bucks. (I got it for $6 at Wal-Mart)

Kaitlin Beard Avatar

I LOVE these! I have Bad to the Bronze and Tough as Taupe. I think they perform so well – I’m in love. I agree – I hope they roll out a lot more neutrals.

Julie P Avatar

Yes! Bad to the Bronze is MAC Genuine Treasure without the glitter fallout! I fell in love with GT but couldn’t handle the fallout, so I returned it. Thrilled with the Maybelline Color Tattoo in BTTB. This is the perfect everyday color for me.

Katie Louise Avatar

How does the orange ‘Fierce & Tangy’ wear as a base? Does it warm up your eye shadows and make them pop? And what color shadows did you pair it with? I don’t think Id wear it by itself so If its a nice base that I could use I might go ahead and get it :] thanks so much in advance! any info would be much help!

Kelly Avatar

Hi Christine! What did you mean by “recent finishes” here:

“The formula compares best to MAC Paint Pots, especially some of the more recent finishes. The best shades are those with less shimmery finishes.”

Jae Avatar

Thanks for the great review! How does the first color (Audacious asphalt) compare to benefit’s skinny jeans? I’d been thinking about buying benefit skinny jeans, but I’d love a cheaper dupe! Thanks!

Sarah Avatar

Hi where can i purchase the maybeline tattoo eye ahadows i woul like to purchase them all. I live in England ans cant seem to find them in my store

Please let me know.

Jennifer Avatar

Christine, do you have a swatch of fierce & tangy? I’m guessing the last photo was supposed to be it and you inadvertently posted another photo.

Jimena Avatar

great review! i heard somewhere that bold gold is a dupe for mac’s indianwood paint pot. would u say they’re similar? i own indianwood so i am a bit hesitant because i don’t want to get a similar shade but if they’re not dupes then I’m definitely going to check it out!

Kayla H. Avatar

It isn’t a dupe, I have both and Bold Gold isn’t really similar at all. Bold Gold is a golden shimmery color, while Indian Wood is a gold/brown duo-chrome metallic color.

Shaina Avatar

I got Tenacious Teal yesterday and LOVE it! The color is so vibrant and applies so nicely. My only concern is how long it will take to dry up and thicken. How do I prevent that, is there a certain way to store it?

erika Avatar

How does bad to the bronze compare to woodwinked by mac? Are the shades similar I prefer cream shadows over powders that is why i am asking 🙂 thank you

Fatime Avatar

Do you have any way to prevent them for drying out? Because I have Bad to The Bronze and a few others and I don’t use them too often so i don’t want them drying on me! (not that they’re too expensive) Any tips on prevention and revival?
