Make Up For Ever Wild & Chic Aqua Cream Collection

Make Up For Ever Wild & Chic Aqua Cream Collection ($175 for 10×0.21 oz.) is a limited edition set housed in a snake print metal tin. It contains these ten Aqua Creams: #1 Anthracite (silvery charcoal shimmer), #2 Steel (silver gray shimmer), #4 Snow (white pearl shimmer), #11 Gold (yellow gold shimmer), #12 Golden Copper (soft copper shimmer), #13 Warm Beige (champagne shimmer), #14 Satin Brown (warm brown shimmer), #15 Taupe (taupe brown shimmer), #16 Pink Beige (pinky beige shimmer), and #17 Plum (burgundy plum shimmer). It also includes #5N Brush. All of these products are available individually; each Aqua Cream retails for $22 and the #5N Brush is also $22. The set may retail for $175, which is a chunk of change to lay down, but the products inside would cost you $242 if you purchased them separately. The shades include in the collection are safe for eyes and cheeks (but not lips).

  • #1 Anthracite is a dark, charcoal gray with a silverish sheen. It has more of a brown base, which is more apparent when you use it as a wash. It’s similar to Bobbi Brown Gunmetal, Estee Lauder Black Chrome (less frosted), and Urban Decay Gunmetal (slightly cooler toned).
  • #2 Steel is a gray-tinted taupe brown with hints of warmth. It’s similar to Giorgio Armani #4.
  • #4 Snow is a bright frosted white. It’s not really cool-toned, but it isn’t overly warm (no yellow in it). It’s whiter and brighter than MAC Forgery. It is similar to Inglot #453.
  • #11 Gold is a medium-dark molten gold with a metallic finish. When it’s sheered out, it looks more like your usual yellow gold, but if you build it up, the darkness in the base gives it that molten look. I couldn’t think of similar shades for this particular hue of gold.
  • #12 Golden Copper is a rich copper with a heavy metallic sheen. Being a copper. it has a reddish orange tone to it, so it tends to suit warmer complexions more than cooler ones. It is similar to several shades: theBalm Meep Meep, Urban Decay Baked, MAC Amber Lights, and Giorgio Armani Gold Blitz.
  • #13 Warm Beige is a subtly warmed-over medium-dark beige. It’s frosted enough that it will add a fair amount of shimmer to any eyeshadows you apply over it, so it’s not my favorite neutral base color. It is really pretty as a wash of color, though. MAC Sweet Satisfaction is a bit browner.
  • #14 Satin Brown is a deep burnished brown with hints of copper. theBalm Tres Moi is similar in color but not as deep. Le Metier de Beaute Bordeaux is redder. MAC Antiqued is browner.
  • #15 Taupe dark chocolaty bronze with a lighter bronze sheen. It’s a bit similar to Bare Escentuals A-Ha and Urban Decay Lost.
  • #16 Pink Beige is a light-medium rosy pink with a hint of beige to neutralize it. It has a metallic-frost finish. It’s darker than shades like Urban Decay Sin. It’s pinker than Giorgio Armani #8.
  • #17 Plum is a reddened plum with red-brown undertones. It has a fairly metallic finish when it’s used more heavily. It reminded me of MAC Star Violet and Inglot #452.

I wish they had included a few of their brighter Aqua Creams in the kit; it’s a very neutral set overall, and it seems to align with their Wild & Chic theme, but I can’t help but feel like they chould have included at least one real pop of color (like #22 Emerald Green). Otherwise, these swatched and felt like the Aqua Creams I’ve reviewed individually.  None of my Aqua Creams have dried out since I’ve had them (and I’ve had 5-10 of them since they originally launched).  They come in plastic containers, which is nice for the lightweight and portability that provides.

Aqua Creams are creamy to the touch and apply easily with a flat, firm-bristled brush (like the included #5N, though mine was a bit frayed). They dry down quickly and stay put all day (12 hours) on the eyes. On cheeks, they work well and wear for eight hours, but you may find that some of the frostier finishes tend to accentuate pores if you use too much. None of these are listed as lip safe, and my experience in the past has been that these will wear for four to six hours, some staining the lips, but they get to be drying after a couple of hours.

P.S. — Sephora has 20% off with code VIBDREAM for VIBs, expires 11/14.

We are all waiting for your review Jennifae on you blog as well. ^______^

She also got 3, 18, 20, 21, and 22 as she mentioned on the Mineral Makeup Forums.

I keep drooling over the set but then slap some sense into me as I would not end up making use of these on a daily bases due to the type of shade and me being so pale. lol I could after bought two of these at IMATS today but avoid the MUFE booth like the plague of insanity it was. lol

UGGHH I hate Make Up For Ever. They need to stop making so many things I want. If I had a never-ending supply of money, I’d probably stock my room with their eye products.

Lisa Avatar

Christine, I know you reviewed several aqua creams eons ago. How are those pots now?

There is just so much product here I am worried it will dry up/expire before I really even have a chance to use it.

Hilary♥ Avatar

OMG those shades are amazing! The brush looks weird lol. I think the price is a little too high but all in all seems like a good deal to me. Dear Santa, here comes another item on my wishlist.

Lindsay Avatar

Christine, you have the best beauty blog hands down. You are so awesome at what you do! If I want to buy something I ALWAYS consult your reviews on it first. I ready every single post even if I know it’s a product I’m not interested in haha. Even why I google shades and a picture of the product on your lips comes up i think to myself, “Hey! That’s temptalia!” Keep up the great work and thank you for being so dedicated!!!

artemis Avatar

true, we;re so lucky to have temptalia cause reviews and swatches are very important 😀 now if only i could buy all of the A rated things :))) heaven

Carolyn Avatar

How well do these work when blended with powder shadows? I love this set, but for $175 I’d like to be able to use them with shadows already in my collection as well as with one another.

Danielle Avatar

I have these (Yea 20% off!!) but I’m new to aqua creams so I’m nervous about using them. Do you just use your brush with them? (You don’t need to wet the brush or anything?)

Eva Avatar

Ugh, these are so totally gorgeous! I’m VIB but as a broke college kid I still can’t justify the purchase. Thanks for reviewing these–at least I can drool over your awesome swatches!! 🙂

Michelle Avatar

Oh my gosh. Want this so much! These colours all look so, so beautiful – yes, neutral, but I like it because I could see myself using every single one of them on a regular basis. It’s a seriously amazing deal too…but $175 (or more like $200+ CAD in Canada where I live :P) is a lot to fork out at one time for eyeshadow :/

I like the aqua creams from Make Up Forever. I must have a very acidic tears or something because when my right eye tears up, the tears get caught in the upper inner crease and takes off anything, even aqua creams! I only get a couple hours of wear with them. So, their staying power ends up being the same as the MAC paint pots.

The MUFE aqua creams dry ridiculously fast if they aren’t in a super air tight jar. I bought some acrylic screw top jars from Coastal Scents and I scooped out half of the aqua cream to put in a jar. I’d use half for me, and reserve the other half for a friend. Well, the aqua cream in the coastal scents jar dried up completely like a rock. I kept the lid screwed on tight too! Such a waste of money and effort.

Because of this, I am turned off from buying MUFE aqua creams. I’ve done this with my MAC paint pots and had no problems with them drying out in a coastal scents screw top jar.

Makeup Forever is greedy. I’m sorry but their products are overpriced imho.
Almost 200 dollars for a set of cream eyeshadows? lol. Thats a car payment.
Really. How insensitive in these tough economic times.

Maybe they could have been more realistic and packaged them in smaller sizes and sold them hey for $75 or under.

Christine Avatar

Whether you want to buy it or not is your decision, but it is $47 less than you’d spend if you bought them individually 🙂 Make Up For Ever is high-end – even so, makeup by its definition is a luxury, because it’s not necessary. You might want to consider other brands if you’re looking for affordability, because MUFE is not it.

Rachel B. Avatar

Is the one on the left mixed with water or just more than one coat? I always get confused when you do the two swatches side by side with all the different eye shadows and things. Are they all mixed with water or is it just more than one coat on all your posts, not just this one?

Christine Avatar

One is a heavy swatch, one is barely any product sheered out. I only use water with products that can be used wet or dry, like a baked eyeshadow. This is a creamy product, so you can get a thick layer, so you can really see the color, but on the lid, you may only do a wash of color.

I think it wound be a better purchase if they had stepped outside of the box and include a few of the other colors like the red, hot pink, turquoise and blue. But i understand that they choose colors that everyone can wear.

I own 6 already and have the hor pink (for my lips), #17 which is my fave I wear that one to work and gym, I have turquoise my FAVE for a daytime look (turq in crease with #13 on lid) I also have the dark blue its ab excellent night time shade for going out, I have the lavendar and I got shade #13 and #15 from when i bought Makeup forever’s beauty in the box last fall for the Friends/fam sale then.

Jennifer F Avatar

I bought this, haven’t tried it yet but I love it already. I knew they would be good from all of the reviews on Aqua Creams and I decided to take the plunge in this set which is quite shocking seeing as I’ve never used them before! Worth the money though and I will use all of the neutral shades which for me is better than buying a bright pink and rarely using it. I have lots of bright bases so it is ideal plus I can use them alone for effortless looks. I really like the brush that comes with it too, shame yours was splayed out.

VnMakeUp Avatar

Thanks so much for this review. I have been eying it since day one. I ended up getting their collection set instead from the f&F sale n totally fell in love with the aqua cream. It included the number 13. It’s all I’ve Been using since I tried it. I also bought the Flash palette and I have been mixing my flash palette with the aqua cream and that seems to work great. So yesterday on the last day of the VIB sale I finally caved in n order this baby because I didn’t want to miss out on the good deal and limited edition. Although I do agree with Christine that they should have added more pop of colors. But I guess this set will work just fine when I mi with my flash palette colors 😉

Corliss Avatar

I purchased this during the Friends and Family sale at Sephora.com. Very happy I got it now it’s sold out. I even purchased 4 more individual shades the bright colors of course, and I’m still looking to get more.

mona Avatar

omg.. i want this so badly.. n it’s sold out.. i tried on the last day of VIB at sephora and the site was down.. too much traffic for a few hours late at night!! Anyone know where else i can get it?? Also – how long do these aqua creme shadows last in the pot? I am afraid they will dry out. how long did christine have them for? my mac paint pots are starting to dry out a bit but it’s been more than 2 years.. but they still work good. Any suggestions of how to mix the aqua creme with flash ones? how does that work?

Ulia Avatar
