Quick Reviews: L’Oreal Brown Extra Intense Eyeliner

L’Oreal Brown (797) Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner ($8.49 for 0.03 oz.) is a dark neutral brown with a creamy, semi-matte finish. It’s easy to work with, and it glides on smoothly on the lid and lash line. It doesn’t drag, pull, or tug, and it deposits color evenly and doesn’t need layers to go opaque.

Welcome to Swatch-all-idays! To start 2011 off on the right foot (or post, as it may be!), Temptalia is going through a backlog of products we have photographed, swatched, and often tested but in a slightly different manner. Quick reviews may be partially incomplete, such as a blush may only be swatched on the arm rather than shown on the face. It is our hope that what we are able to provide is still helpful!

RECOMMENDATION: This is one of the better eyeliners I’ve discovered at drugstores — at the price tag, I’d recommend waiting for them to go on sale!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Just curious as to why you would opt for high end if you have no complaints with the formula on this? Seems it might be a good value then, or do you judge quality and value differently depending on the brand? If it is opaque, doesn’t migrate, and is smooth, isn’t that the most you can expect from a plain-jane, nothing fancy brown eyeliner?

Value is based on similar brands – I’m not comparing Chanel to Urban Decay or Chanel to L’Oreal. Quality is judged by the same standards across all products, no matter the price.

I prefer high-end products for a myriad of reasons, ranging from enjoying the packaging more, shade ranges, reliability of long-term wear, grade of ingredients, etc. that it’s my personal preference that if we’re talking $8.49 to $14 (and this liner is only 0.03 oz, while the average liner is 0.04 oz., so the actual discrepancy is closer), I personally would buy high-end.

I’ve purchased high and low end makeup, and the drugstore eye pencils are a complete waste of my money. And I speak from not years, but decades, of buying makeup. I always think, Oh, I’ll buy a cheaper brand and save money and it will last just as long. NO. Within a week, the Drugstore Brand(Cover Girl/L’Oreal/Maybelline/Physicians Formula/Almay/on and on and on) do not last on the eye; they fade; they smear; they are waxy. So I’ll spring the $14-$25 for a high-priced eyeliner and own it for as long as the thing has product to use. It does not end up in the wastebasket.

I have this brown liner and like it just as much as the high end liners in my collection. When it comes to plain colors like this, I have no problem using drug store liners.

I really like these but I’ve had black and brown and with both colors sharpening was a problem. There seem to be pockets without product. I would sharpen and sharpen and the product would just break off or smoosh.

Tania Avatar

I know what you mean. For a while my go to liner wasL’Oreal Infallible eyeliner and the sharpening was a mess. 🙁
It was a pretty good liner, but for the price and the product lost it didn’t make sense.

Purchased these several times (black) and they are pretty good, even better than some higher end brands I’ve tried. They smudge a lil bit but not significantly more than any others.

I ended up buying the black version of this and I really like it… not the best I’ve had, but it’s good. I found it funny that when I went to check reviews on the L’oreal website that the #1 complaint about this product is that people thought it couldn’t be sharpened! People were saying that the casing is plastic not wood! Just in case anyone was wondering, this sharpens like any ‘ol eyeliner pencil 🙂

I have this one in gray (dark smoky gray) and I love it. Goes on smooth and stays put. Very sweet when drugstore runs BOGO cosmetics. It held up slightly longer than UD 24/7 in wear test and it’s smokier than the 24/7 shades. They only have 3 colors though. Sharpening yea, it’s a soft pencil so I’d use Grindhouse or another good sharpener for best results. Unfortunately the brown doesn’t look nearly as rich. 🙁

I loved it on my waterline and it didn’t smudge but if you wear contacts you cannot wear this eyeliner. it smudges all over your contacts and ruins them. 🙁

what??? the liquid pencil? in plum and bronze? or the other version of the loreal pencils (I think there’s a version that’s not called liquid pencil and it’s good but not the same)
