LORAC Black The Skinny Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

LORAC Black Skinny Eyeshadow Palette
LORAC Black Skinny Eyeshadow Palette

LORAC Black Skinny Eyeshadow Palette ($15.00 for 0.45 oz.) is a mix of darker neutral shades that ranges from a gray-ish beige to a medium-dark black. The quality is decent to good, but the more powdery formula could benefit greatly from an eyeshadow primer/base. A few shades are powdery enough where they don’t adhere smoothly to the lid or they’ll dust away as you blend them. The wear was decent at seven and a half hours on average, despite no primer. The darker shades were a little firmer and harder to blend, while the lighter shades felt very smooth and finely-milled (but on the powdery side).

Black #1 is a light, gray-tinged beige with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, finely-milled texture that was very smooth without being powdery. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Urban Decay Walk of Shame (P, $18.00) is darker, cooler. theBalm Adagio (P, $16.00) is darker. MAC Cozy Grey (P, $16.00) is darker. Too Faced Meow (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Kat Von D Lifelike (P, ) is lighter, less pigmented. Too Faced Meringue (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Makeup Geek Baby Face (P, $5.99) is darker. ColourPop Glow (LE, $5.00) is lighter, brighter. Tarte Full Moon (LE, ) is lighter, brighter. theBalm Matt Smith (LE, $16.00) is cooler. theBalm B1 (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer. MAC Orb (P, $16.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Black #2 is a light-medium, beige-brown with a sparkly, frosted sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a slightly drier texture where the shimmer seemed to separate from the powder, which made it harder to apply. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before fading. NARS Dione (P, $29.00) is more shimmery, darker, more pigmented. Rouge Bunny Rouge Rain Dove (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker. Laura Mercier Topaz (P, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. Smashbox Doe (P, ) is darker, warmer. Smashbox Flirt (P, ) is lighter. Dior Golden Reflections #3 (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter. Black #3 is a light-medium taupe brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a soft, finely-milled texture that made it easily blended on the skin. It wore for seven and a half hours on me. LORAC Latte (P, ) is darker, warmer. Sephora Collection Smoke Signals (P, $13.00) is darker. Becca Ombre Rouge #1 (P, ) is lighter, warmer. This shade stayed on for seven and a half hours on me. Inglot #357 (P, $6.00) is warmer. theBalm Allegro (P, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Clove (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Black #5 is a medium-dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish–there was a subtle sheen to the eyeshadow, but it was less apparent once applied. The texture was drier and stiffer, which made it harder to blend when used on the lid. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Sephora Collection Rocky (P, $13.00) is lighter. LORAC Chocolate (P, ) is darker. Sephora Collection #tbt (P, $13.00) is darker. LORAC Corduroy (P, ) is warmer. Viseart Jori (P, ) is more shimmery, warmer. Thanks for reviewing this so soon! I almost got this since I generally like Lorac’s shadows. But, I read some of the other reader’s comments and stopped myself. It looks pretty dupable. I think primer would help it out and at $15-it can’ be beat. So, for some-this may be a great buy. But, I think I don’t need this. I have a ton of neutral mattes and this would probably just clutter up my stash because I don’t think I would use it too often. Do you find it particularly unique Christine?( I have all of the UD palettes and a tome of MUFE matte netrals for reference).

While this palette is a HUGE pass for me, I gotta ask about that GORGEOUS eyeliner you have on! Looks like a starry night sky! What is it???

I have three words for this (and all the Skinny palettes): Made In China. So it’s a pass for me.

WARNING – RANT TO FOLLOW: It really bugs me that LORAC, a brand I love when they do their usual (not made in China) great palettes — Pro 1 and Pro 2, Unzipped, etc.– puts out this mediocre product. It would appear they are just cashing in on the LORAC name and customers like me who love the brand but don’t realize until after the fact that they are made in China and not up to par for LORAC.

Rachel R. Avatar

I don’t think their being made in China is the issue. LORAC’s other little promo palettes, such as the recent Resort Palette, last holiday season’s Vintage Vixen and Sultry Startlet, Get Hot and Stay Cool, etc. are all very good and all made in China.

The Skinny Palettes for some reason are just really inconsistent. I thought Skinny Nude and Navy were terrible (my first LORAC items, and I almost never bought from the brand again). Plum was quite nice, though. I don’t know if they use a different formula or manufacturer for them or what. I just decided not to buy the Skinny line any more. If one comes out with great swatches and reviews, I’ll catch it on HauteLook. This one is a pass for sure.

I have a Lorac Pro palette and a single shadow, lovely colors but I find Lorac’s formula to be too powdery to stick on my lids, unless I use a tacky cream shadow base, so I’m skipping this one

For $15, I NEED this! I do like Lorac, and I could so carry this in my purse stash! I love all of the shades, especially #6! I have a very intense weakness for taupes, especially on the cool side! And, I love how they’re all not too over the top shimmery. I’ve really been wanting to try the all matte look, but in some photos, the eye just looks so dry and powdery, in my opinion! So, this is a fair swing from the overly shimmer shades that I always use!

Annie Avatar

This is cute and tempting at $15, but I already have the Lorac Pro Palettes 1, 2, and mega pro! This looks like it could be handy for travel & everyday looks, but it sounds like the eyeshadows are not as good quality as the pro palettes? Because those are excellent quality in my opinion!

Sheri Avatar

This looks so much like Naked basics, it makes me really wish that I could customize my own Naked Basics palette and that would be UD’s singles build-a-palette system.

Bisa Avatar

Hi, I think this product is discontinued. Not sure if you mentioned it in another article on the site but I can’t seem to find it anywhere not even on the LORAC website. I did however find the Blue Skinny eyeshadow palette on Amazon.com

Melissa Avatar

Hi Christine!

Did you happen to purchase the Skinny Marsala palette as well? I saw it on the website but it’s unavailable. I didn’t see it during the beginning of the sale. I hope they bring it back!

Bonnie Avatar

I’ve bought clothes, shoes, jewelry and sunglasses on haute look but never even realized they sell makeup! Do Lorac items regularly turn up there and cheaper? I’ll have to check it out!

Rachel R. Avatar

Yes, pretty regularly. The also get Kevin AuCoin, Stila, Tarina Tarantino, Morphe, occasionally Too Faced, Butter London…lots of brands. If you sign up for their e-newsletters, you’ll get a heads up on the new sales.

Jana Avatar

I just picked this up today from Nordstrom Rack.I played around with it tonight, and I really like it! It will effortlessly go from day to night looks. I’m a matte girl, and this does not disappoint. I actually like it better than the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette I have. It is more pigmented, and the pans are twice the size at half the price. If you like matte looks and have a chance to pick this up, I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute!
