Look - MAC Style Black: Dark Smoky Eyes

MAC Style Black Look: Dark Smoky Eyes

Just a quick Style Black I through together this morning before I took a shower. I’m not sold on mineralize eyeshadows whatsoever! I applied these mineralize eyeshadows wet using water-based mixing medium (for better adhesion and to minimize fall out). Admittedly, it’s all over a significantly dark base, so maybe that’s why they just don’t pop much. I did two different lips — the first is the lip I’d actually pair with it (based on my style and preferences); the second is with black lips as requested.

Two notes:  I’m wearing Korres’ Wild Rouse Foundation in this look.  (I think the shade may be a lil’ orange on me–not sure if going a shade lighter will help or not yet.)  One eye has a stronger distinction between crease and highlight (which, to be honest, looked fine in real life) that I would recommend blending out more in practice.

You will need the following…

  • Eyes: Soft Ochre paint pot (neutral beige base), Dark Soul pigment (dark black-gray), Gilt By Association mineralize eyeshadow (black-bronze), Young Punk mineralize eyeshadow (black-purple), Blue Flame eyeshadow (dark blue), Femme-fi eyeshadow (neutral highlighter), Black Greasepaint Stick (black with purple shimmer), Stila Purple Pumps Smudge Pot (purple shimmer), Plushlash mascara (black)
  • Cheeks: Plum Foolery blush (pinky-purple)
  • Lips: Brave New Bronze lipstick (pinky nude), Bling Black glimmerglass (dirty antique gold)
  • Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
  • Substitutes: Gilt By Association = Tempting; Young Punk = Contrast; Blue Flame = Deep Truth; Femme-fi = Shroom; Black Greasepaint = Smolder; Brave New Bronze = Velvet Teddy; Bling Black = Reflects Antique Gold + Black Lip Mix + Clear gloss

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. With the 239, apply Dark Soul pigment with water-based mixing medium on the lower lid. On the inner lid, pack Gilt by Association eyeshadow on using the 239. Apply Young Punk eyeshadow to the middle and outer portions of the lid. Darken crease with Blue Flame eyeshadow using the 226. Sweep Femme-fi eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Black Greasepaint stick on lower lash line, and Stila Purple Pumps smudge pot on lower lash line with 209. Apply Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Plum Foolery blush using the 129. Apply Brave New Bronze lipstick to lips, and then top with Bling Black glimmerglass for color and shine.

I love the look, but agree, the colors do kinda look mellowed out.

It’s amazing what a difference a lipstick can make! The first pic looks smoky and hot. The second pic looks immediately goth LOL!

Torie Avatar

Wow! Lol I can tell what you think in the last picture for sure. My 12yr old wants the lips and I like the eye. I like the closeups better though bc I can see the diff colors. I have to admit though I like the darker lip more than the other. I could see me where this to the office. They would prob send me home though for violating some dress code. You are gorgeous no matter which colors you put on. I’m jealous.(sorry I like to ramble:))

Audrey Avatar

LOVE the eyes!!! I go back and forth on if I should get the Brave New Bronze lipstick, probably too late now 🙂

And from the pics, I would have thought it was more of a coral-y blush, looks great!

Nepenthe Avatar

I think you’re right about the foundation, but aside from that I think both looks are great. :]

I like that you used three of the shadows so we could see how they appear next to each other.

Thanks!

Rebecca Avatar

Is it weird that I kind of like the darker foundation? LOL You look stunning and sort of tanned with it! I can tell the shade difference in the lip close-up as there is a tiny bit of demarcation, but that is on a million times zoom. LOL

for some reason the black lip look reminds of that trend from the mid 90s (like seventh grade for me) where we wore too dark lip liner… love the eyes though! and the neutral lip!

Alexis Avatar

Your eyes look great – I felt that Blue Flame had pop when placed on top of Bat Black CCB when I tried it on. Now I’m rethinking my purchases which I am excited to pickup today!!! Black lip combo – not so much…maybe with a neutral eye…MAYBE!!

HA – I’m just feeling too old to try to pull off full on black lips. Maybe if I was still in my mod days and I was 15 again!

Katherine Avatar

Love the eye look – I know you’re not a huge fan, but I can’t wait to see these e/s in person today. Don’t like the black lippie at all – just my humble opinion.

Rachael Avatar

I actually love the eyes! I think it looks sulty and sexy! I really don’t like black lipstick, I just don’t get the vampy look….but with the nude lip, I think you look fantastic! I think the blush is a little too pink to work with the look.

Jennifer Avatar

You could kick ass and rule the world with the black lipstick Christine!

I do dig the nude/pink with the eye…I might have to check out this collection, if only I had money…Oh, well who needs money when there is credit cards! lolz 🙂

Rachel Avatar

Love the E/s Christina! & the brave new bronze*favveee color* …but the black lips are a bit to much…you pull it off, but I guess if I tried I’d look way to goth. ick.

Jamie Avatar

darn! I could have used this look for the wedding I went to last weekend. The e/s colors were all in the dress that I wore.

I don’t like the black lipstick but it makes your lips look amazing (shapewise)

Nicole15 Avatar

Christine – you mentioned you were wearing the Korres Wild Rose Foundation right?? I have been wearing their foundation too I love it, but the color I thought would be best for me (WRF 3) was too dark/orange. Im typically an NC 20/25. So, I went with the WRF 2 and it has been perfect. I really am loving the foundation overall color/coverage it gives. Another 2 thumbs up for Korres!

Manda Avatar

love the eye! wow, its my fave of yours so far i think! going today to get some stuff frmo the black collection and you may have just sold me on gilt by association haha where did you use purple pumps? i bought that last week so ill pretty much have all of the items you used and im excited to try and recreate this!! thank u!

Vanessa Avatar

I LOVE the look with the nude lips.. and I also love this blush you paired with it. I may have to check that one out! ; ] You can never have enough blush.

Christy Avatar

Great eye look! I can’t wait to try it out. Have you tried using a 242 instead of a 239 brush to apply MES wet? I found that there’s less fall out that way. The black lips look fun, but not something I’d do often. Bling Black doesn’t really show much on though, so I may just get some glitter and gloss instead.

Whirl Avatar

Too much,way TOO MUCH blush!
And the color of the blush is completely wrong!
There should be light “barely-there” beigy flesh colored one.
This blush just ruins the whole effect.
And the look with the black lips requires pale chick, otherwise the blush makes it look clownish.
But besides this everything is nice.

Rebecca Avatar

There is no right or wrong way to do makeup, there is only general opinion. If we look back at the 80s we would say what was right back then is wrong.

Anitacska Avatar

I love the eyes, really pretty. 🙂 Agree about the foundation, does look terribly orange though. Dont like the black lips either, but wasnt planning on getting any black lip stuff anyway.

Reese Avatar

I love the eyeshadow combo that you used. I have to try it! And you pull off both lip colors very well 🙂 I cant wait to get my order in the mail and play with this collection.

Erynn Avatar

Very cute look-I dont have the confidence to pull off a look like this but I think its great the way you did it. It remids me of the Kat Von D look although you are a bit tanner than she appears to be. Overall I love it, blush and all. I like both lippies as well, just that the black carries the look to the more daring side. Yayyy Christine!

Jennifer Avatar

Hi Christine,
I am a total fan of you and your site. Love it!
I just have a suggestion:
Next time can you take a full face picture while sort of looking down. that way i can completely see the eyeshadow as well as the made up face.
Thanks,

liz Avatar

girl, you actually dont look bad with black lips; but if youre not used to it, its definitely the shock of seeing it on that makes you think its bad. just like the first red lip you try lol. but i kinda like the shimmeryness of the shadows, though i dont think i like it enough to buy it. also, i cant see the whole thing, but is that necklace from hm? it looks like one i have lol

Darby Avatar

I am head over heels, madly in love with this look! I love that its dark and smoky but still has a surprising amount of color. I wasn’t planning on getting much from Style Black but now I may have to!

amy Avatar

I really like the second look actually because it really shows off the collection of dark makeup colours for this season. I like that you use almost all the Style Black products to show off the product and the line. It is a very fun look to go out with once in a blue moon like clubbing or party. 🙂

Rose Avatar

The eyes are super hot and I love the nude lips! You’re so pretty. BNB is my favorite nude lipstick and you’ve just convinced me I need that gloss 🙂

Catherine Avatar

This eye look is FANTABULOUS. I am so not a fan of MAC’s MES but I have to say, Gilt by Association looks soooo pretty on you in this look! The gold really pops in the full face pictures even though it’s not that noticeable on the closeups. I’m also impressed at how Brave New Bronze looks w/ the gloss on top. Truly adds a whole new dimension!

And yea… you’re right about the Korres Rose foundation – it is def too orange for you. =/

Carmen Avatar

I just loved the eye look, Christine, particularly for nighttime, with the pale lips. You did a fantastic job!
I’m afraid the black lipstick didn’t do it for me, but then, I don’t think most women can pull it off without looking goth-ish, or ready for Halloween.

claudia Avatar

Wow, Thanks so much for the full ” style black look ” ….
So pretty !!!
You are a pretty girl, have gorgeous mouth/lips and a pretty smile, so naturally everything looks nice on you, but I think the black lippie is a bit strange … I’m more fond of the first look!!! The eyes are amazing 🙂 The Stilla Purple Pumps looks fab too 😀

Joanna Avatar

WOW !

that’s all i can say for this look.
both neutral lip and black lip.

=D

i wanna ask though.

i can’t decide on to get young punk or blue flame.

=[

which colour pays off better ?
and does the colour look 100% like in the picture.
coz i love the picture colour.

ooh and which do you prefer love ?

thank you !

Ki Avatar

OMG i love the eyes. Not sure about the summery blush with the black lips, but I think the blush was meant to go with the first lip look? BTW I would love to see you with a brown smokey eye.

Anya Avatar

wow, this is amazing. although i would only go out on a regular night with the subdued lip. i’ll save the black lip stick for halloween 😉
you look beautiful!

Jens7lil1s Avatar

Your eyes look super and Brave new Bronze is beautiful on you. It looks totally different on me. I don’t know if I will ever thing black looks look good on anyone though. They just look gangsta to me. Lol.
