What lip color did you think you'd use all the time but rarely reach for?

What three upcoming products are you most excited for? Share!

Nothing comes to mind, probably because I don’t wear many lip colors more than a couple of times (and I kind of know that going in).

Me too…I bought Venom because it’s so beautiful in the tube and swatched on my hand but the couple of times I’ve put it on…it just doesn’t seem quite right on me…you’re right, it is brighter than expected. It is a pretty colour though, I should give it to someone it suits more!

Some nude beige lipcolors – they’re suppose to look natural and go with a smokey eye, but they tend to wash me out and look aging. I think it’s more flattering to wear MLBB pinks on lips and cheeks.

Too Faced Melted Peony.I thought that it would be holy grail, but i dont like the smell, it dries out my lips, and the color doesnt look as good on me as I thought it would. I don’t hate it,but it’s definitely not my favorite.

The Revlon matte balm in Elusive.

Funny story actually… I researched my first few lip colors for quite a while and in that first round of decisions I decided on Elusive. I went into CVS before work, found it on a new display rack, and confidently purchased it. As I sat in my car before work applying it I noticed it looked completely different than how I thought it would look. It wasn’t until then I realized I had accidentally grabbed Sultry instead. I hadn’t wanted such a bold (for me back then) lip color! Well, within ten minutes of being at work I got two compliments about my lip color, and Sultry quickly became my go-to shade for a few months. I went back a few days later to buy Elusive but honestly have only worn it a handful of times.

Pink for spring an summer! I bought chatterbox by mac last spring cause it looked like such a neutral pink. I figured I could wear it full on och just dab a bit on my lips for a more subtle look, but however I put it on it just doesn’t look quite right to me!

Me too. I bought the Nars Dolce Vita set (lipstick, gloss and nail polish) during Nordstrom’s anniversary sale. I love nudes but the lipstick is boring. I rarely use it and when I do, I layer another lip liner or lipstick with it ( ie Buxom’s Dolly or Viva Glam V) to give it more dimension. Real bummer.

I…do OK on that front, actually! I seem to use all my lipsticks and things about as often as I’d expect to (daily for assorted MLBBs, sheers etc and more sporadically for brights and unconventionals). Mind you, it’s partially because lipstick is my thing – if the question were about eyeshadow, then the answer would be: UD Sin, hah! It’s still my most-used shadow, but I thought I would use it more often (and even then it’s a tiny pan in the old ammo palette – I didn’t even buy a full size or anything!)

Well, that was a long answer to a short question… 😀

That’s a really hard one since I rotate my lip products all the time.

The only thing that jumps to mind is the set I got of three Rodial Glamsticks. They looked nice when I swatched them and seemed fairly moisturising but when I actually tried them on they turned out to be only slightly moisturising and although they had good pigmentation they weren’t very flattering or glossy on the lips. I thought they would be great for everyday but I just don’t like how they look on. 🙁

I can’t think of a single one. I never buy shades that aren’t in my comfort range of “flattering”, so I cycle through them all. Oh wait – Too Faced Melted Ruby…I almost forgot about that. It is just too bright and dry looking – not a nice look at all.

Nikki Avatar

When I was platinum blond, I LOVED Niagara. I felt like a Hitchcock babe. Unfortunately I went back to dark hair not a month after picking it up. It’s still a great lipstick, and yet… lol

Crystal Avatar

Same with me! The colour is super nice but for some reason the formula just reacts badly with my lips or something; every single time I put it on it instantly looks like I have really dry lips (which I basically never do, btw). It’s weird because normally Nars lipsticks are my favorites.

Karla Avatar

Loreal extraordinarie liquid lipstick in rose melody. In my hand it swatches so beautiful but on my lips the color is almost non existent, i bought it eight months ago and i ‘ve used it maybe 3 times

Nancy T Avatar

MAC Pink Pidgeon! And NOT because it doesn’t look good, but it’s definitely not easy to wear unless I’m wearing black, white or fuschia for my top or dress.

keg Avatar

Bright orange seemed so perfect when I had some color and lived in the south. Now it just seems garish against my pale skin and I find I never reach for it.

Emma Avatar

Definitely the Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Native. It’s a beautiful shade and it goes great with my fair skin, but I found the formula to be too slippy (I’d get lipstick smeared into my Cupid’s bow). I have to make a conscious decision to try and wear it more but every time I try I feel like I look like a kid who got into her mom’s makeup bag.

Jennifer Avatar

Every once in a while, I pick up a sensible lip color. A nude pink, a MLBB… and I either immediately destash to a friend or it languishes in my collection for a few months before destashing. The latest victims are Nars New Lover and Estee Lauder Tiramisu. There’s nothing wrong with the colors, but I just don’t ever reach for them.

PinkCloud Avatar

I have the same problem with MAC lipstick. I can only use the lustre finish from Mac. Well, only a certain shade like Crosswire, Plumful,Lady Bug, Cockney, Milan Mode, Syrup, Sweetie, Lustering, Lickable, & Rebel goes on nicely. All Mac other shades didn’t seem to do well for my dry lip.

Nikki Avatar

Oh, great question. Make Up For Ever 45. It really is everything I love in a bright red, but I reach for Ruby Woo 95% of the time because it stays on so well through nibbling and drinking. I suppose I’m also not wearing red reds as much these days either. It makes me wish I had more faces to put all my make up on.

Estefania Avatar

Definitely MAC Rebel. I thought it would be more berry/purple, but it pulls pink on my lips. I ended up giving it to my cousin. Another culprit would be the YSL Glossy Stain in Peche Cerra Cola. Totally thought it would be gone in a year, but I’ve only used it a handful of times.
Another would be the Bite Beauty Remix set. I loved the colors, but the smell just reminds me of toy makeup sets for little girls. Not cute.

I’m currently working on finishing those up so I don’t have to feel bad about them lying around!

Jules Avatar

Dark purples (like MAC Cyber). I love them (dark purple is my absolute favourite colour) but they require SO MUCH WORK to apply. Same with Makeup For Ever #50 and certain reds and berries (like Mrs. Mia Wallace and Shame). I find lighter colours easier to apply, but I’m really not that much of a pastel girl (I’m a cool winter so I need the rich, jewel toned colours).

Rachel R. Avatar

Clinique’s Black Honey. I mean, it’s nice, I like it OK, and I wear it sometimes, but I have no idea why it has such a cult following.

Also, any matte, satin, or cream beige lipstick. I’ve tried several, and they just don’t do anything for my face. I need a little sparkle, or a tinge of pink or peach, but straight on beige just makes it look like I have no lips.

cara Avatar

Every single lip tar that I own. For some reason I have purchased like 10 of them when I actually don’t really like them. They are messy and high maintenance

Deborah Avatar

I used to wear Nars Orgasm lipstick a lot – got many compliments until I realized that I looked so much better in pinks! I never reach for peachy colors now.

Kelly Avatar

Probably KVD L’ecole Des Femmes…don’t get me wrong…I love this lipstick, but I thought it would be more salmon-y on me, instead it leans quite pink. Its still really pretty, and I love the matte finish…its definitely one of the more comfortable ones out of the Studded range (not as good as Lovecraft though), it just wasn’t as orange leaning as I was expecting it to be. However, I did find a beautiful semi-matte gorgeous coral/salmon in Nars Audacious Julie…it is just the shade I was hoping L’ecole des Femmes would be. Those Audacious lipsticks are becoming like pokemon for me…gotta get em all! I just got Raquel today…

Lisa Avatar

I think I have more than I’d like to admit, although I’m planning on getting rid of them. A couple I can think of are Revlon lipbutters (I thought I would enjoy the balm like texture, but I don’t); Mac Viva Glam V (there’s really no colour just shimmer and I just don’t care for it); Mac Oh Oh Oh and Mac Offshoot (the formula is just too drying.

RedHedd Avatar

Revlon Coloburst in Rosy Nude. I even bough several backups when they d/c’d it, so now they sit in a drawer. I still reach for it occasionally, but find myself wearing more color than MLBB lipsticks more often than not.

Alla Avatar

Oddly enough, I’ve been steering clear of violets. Bite’s Violet and Nars Full Frontal were my favourite lipsticks for a while, but then I got so sick of the whole “radiant orchid” thing that I haven’t worn them since last January. I hope Sephora/Pantone don’t spoil deep wine colours for me…

Rachel Avatar

Mac impassioned.. don’t like how easily it transfers, and its too warm toned for me. Such a shame because it’s gorgeous, but I am too cool toned to wear it!

Kimberly Avatar

After reading so much hype, I bought the YSL Rouge Volupte in No.1 which is a beautiful color perfect for my skin tone. However I do not like the formula at all. It’s too creamy not staying on more than fifteen minutes without glopping up and patches all over and terrible feathering. I’ve got to check this site for a color dupe now that I think of it. I loved the beautiful case but passed it on to my mom who found the same problems. My second one is the Fresh lip balm treatment in honey- so thick and goopy somehow tho it’s a stick form. The little tube which I love just melts almost and staying power might be ten minutes on me. So disappointing!

Sami Avatar

Dior Addict Extreme in Lucky. I was so excited to buy it as I’d never bought a lipstick from them before, but I find it drying and it also wears down patchy. The color is so pretty but I hate that I can’t wear it to work without looking like a hot mess later on.

CJ Avatar

MAC Creme Cup. It’s on literally everyone’s favorites list and every YouTube video about top ten MAC lipsticks but just looks terrible on me. I kept it for a long time before finally giving up.

Jade Avatar

There have been quite a few recently (bad!!) but I’m seriously thinking of forcing myself to rotate my lip colours, ie I have to wear a different one each day and can’t use something again until I’ve used everything!!

Emilie Avatar

My Revlon Matte Balm in Audacious! Now it’s winter so bright orange isn’t exactly relevant, but I haven’t touched it since I bought it over the summer. Wore it maybe 2-3 times :/ Same with my NYX Butter Glosses, I have 2 and I think they’re awesome, I just always reach for my Buxom glosses over those.

Travie Avatar

I have a couple. first is my MAC lippie MYTH. It looks awesom on me when I use a chestnut liner but because I am medium brown skinned I can only get away with it in the winter months cause it’s too bright to wear when I realy tanned and the second is Lipstick Queen in Peachy Nude Sinner. It’s my exact complexion so it looks like I’m not wearing anything plus it’s not matte enough so my lips just look “greasy”! Maybe I should wear the two together.

Astrild Avatar

Nudes. I usually wear nomakeup-makeup looks on a daily bases and even when It would be the most natural option, I feel they washes me out. I always gravitated to darker nudes, light pinks or sheer lipsticks instead.

Sarah Avatar

Definitely Pure Zen by MAC, looked great in the tube and great when I swatched it on my hand. I was in a hurry so I left and ordered it from home, I was so disappointed when I put it on my lips. It looked slimy and emphasized every single dry patch, made my lips look like they were peeling.

Susan Dowman Nevling Avatar

I have trouble with some lighter shades. Some look great but some look so chalky. I can’t tell by looking which ones,wi) work. I have a,fair to medium co complxion. Very frustrating.

Nina Avatar

Mac angel just doesn’t work with my skin,
Mac twig is too dark for an everyday shade,
Mac Brick-o-la is too orange,
Revlon lip butter in sewer tart and juicy papaya don’t flatter me either.
I had high hopes for all these lipsticks, but I can only wear them once or twice a year. 🙁
