Do you layer mascaras?

Do you layer mascaras? What are your favorite combos? Share!

Sometimes I’ll use a mascara that really defines and lengthens, and then one that thickens, but I usually just use one at a time! I haven’t layered in awhile, so I can’t recall a favorite combo right now!

I’m very lucky to be blessed with really thick long curled lashes, so I love to let them be seen but I don’t ever layer to do so! The weight is not good for lashes! I do use lash conditioner, but I use moisturizer on my face as well, so is that a layer? Otherwise, the closest I can say I’ve come to layering is when I apply Anastasia Waterproof Long Lasting Top Coat (is that the right name?) around my lower lashes to prevent even waterproof from creating a smoky line. But that’s it! Oh, I’ve used glitter and crystals back in the day as well. 😀 It’s pretty difficult to flawlessly pull off one mascara layer because I have so many lashes that I’m heading for a mess if I dare Keep plopping it on for no reason. No room. 😀

Sometimes and when I do it’s always the Napoleon Perdis Lashes to Lashes or Bobbi Brown’s Everything mascara with Chanel’s Le Volume De Chanel either on the outer 3rd or the moddle of the eye.

I used Falsies and They’re Real in a combo, ‘cos Falsies would put a lot of product on, then They’re Real would brush through it and separate the lashes; but then I got Babydoll, and this one doesn’t need anything else. I just keep brushing it through until it looks like false lashes. 😀

I most of the time just put more coats on rather than using different mascaras for different purposes. There are quite a few products out there that can lengthen, separate and volumize so I save myself from the hassle.

Mariella Avatar

Nope. The closest I get is applying mascara and then applying Clarins’s “Double Fix Mascara”, which isn’t a mascara at all but a sealant that makes any mascara waterproof, smudge-proof, mess-proof. It can also be used as a mascara primer but I’ve only ever used it as a “top coat”. It’s amazing!

I have coloured mascara in blue and purple which I use by layering over black just on the tips of my lashes. The blue is too light to use by itself and the purple clumps like it’s nobody’s business.
For regular mascara I prefer lengthening formulas since I have thick lashes and I find one coat is plenty.

Thanks for answering my question. I layer all the time. I need the different brushes, i need volume and length. Lately it has been Mac Studio Sculpt mascara and Physicians Formula Sexy Booster mascara.

Right now I’m layering Diorshow Iconic Extreme with Benefit They’re Real. I find that the Benefit mascara can go a little clumpy if I don’t separate the lashes with the Dior one first. The brush on the Dior one is amazing so but it doesn’t give me the length and volume I like so that’s why I use “They’re Real” on top.

I’ve never layered mascara, but I get why it might be an option. I really truly despise most mascaras. I just tried the Benefit Bad Gal and They’re Real and both are a total pass. Right now I’m using MAC pro sculpt with the really cool comb brush. The formula is pretty good for my type of lashes (short, straight, very spiky), but I wish the product was better quality and had more flex as was less drying. I love the Sisley So Intense mascara (similar wand), but the price tag is just way too high and occasionally you get a dud–one that is a little more dried out and doesn’t last a month–and In that snack bracket, it hurts too much. Ideally, the MAC wand with the Sisley formula.

I started layering mascaras a long time ago when I got Sephora’s mascara sampler. I found that some mascaras didn’t give enough “umph” by themselves. So, I put a lighter layer of a lengthening mascara as the base (previously it was Smashbox’s Full Exposure mascara; now it is Buxom’s mascara). Then I use Benefit’s They’re Real mascara as the finishing coat on the top and lower lashes (I love this one as a top coat–my lashes got wayyyy too clumpy when I used it as a base coat).

Dick Page suggested in an article: Blinc underneath, dry, then Diorshow Iconic on top. Pretty good combo. Usually I do Blinc for lowers, bec. it doesn’t move with concealer + something else on top lashes: They’re Real, Dior, maybe even Blinc or other brand colored, esp. w/ neutral shadow + a pop of color in liner.

Layering mascaras is practically ‘my thing’. I pretty much always use a final layer of covergirl’s waterproof clump crusher no matter what other mascaras I use.
Favorite combo for a big night or date or event though is
benefit ‘they’re real’ + too faced ‘better than false lashes’ system + cover girl ‘clump crusher’
So yes that means it’s technically 5 layers when you add in the 3 steps of the too faced. But I’m a fiend I guess.

I do, but not for aesthetic reasons. I’ve read that waterproof mascara can sometimes be a bit harsh and drying on lashes, so, when I need something waterproof (like when I attend a wedding), I do my regular mascara and do a layer of my waterproof one on top.

I use Lancome Cil Booster with Buxom Mascara. Long, thick, defined lashes every time. This is my HG combo. People swear I am wearing falsies.

Tammy Avatar

All the time. I may love the formula of one yet prefer the brush of another. Sometimes it’s because one formula only does one thing..

RM Avatar

yes! mine used to be long & thick but as i’ve gotten older, they’ve become long & thin. so i am always trying to thicken and volumize without clumping. l’oreal voluminous is a good base layer to provide thickness at the base with almay get up and grow as second coat for extra lengthening and thickening at the tips.

Yes: Only because I find that the Mally Volumizer is he blackest black I possess and I like it as “last” coat. Also I have the feeling it holds the curl quite well. Nothing extraordinary in my short lashes but I think it makes a difference.

I started using the Sleek lengthening mascara ( and its serum but this has now run out;I haven’t repurchased and not sure if I will) so I am keeping the Sleek one as a “treatment” for first coat, as separates decently and I finnish with the Mally. Just 2 coats in all for everyday.

Also I used to use Estee Lauder Double Wear for last coat because is very waterproof but it too run out.

I’m such a layer-er. I use different combos all the time, usually I go for both brush AND product. Right now I’m doing MUFE Smokey Lash, applied with product and brush from Mabelline Volum’ Express, using the TINY mascara brush, meant for bottoms! If anyone is in the market for a super tiny, super detailed brush…

Lanea Avatar

I layer mascara all the time. I have one with a thin brush and one with a thick brush. I use the thin brush to get to the end of my lashes, my bottom lashes and to get to the base of my lashes. then I use the thick brush to layer my mascara. Sometimes I will even put water proof on top of all the mascara together.

Quinctia Avatar

I don’t layer mascaras generally. Sometimes, I’ll put on a normal mascara before using a colored one, if I want a certain effect.

I also used the double ended Maybelline XXL Extensions for a long time, however I find that using just Maybelline the Falsies Black Drama or Buxom Lash gets me similar results with one product.

Jennifer Avatar

I do! First with Lancome Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara and then with Lancome Hypnôse Drama Waterproof Instant Full Body Volume Mascara. A quick comb-thru afterwards and I’m out the door!

ALWAYS! I have a couple different methods –

1. I’ll use a fibre mascara (hard candy’s right now), do a couple coats and then use a volumizing, like Voluminous or Revlon Grow luscious or lash potion. (I really don’t like Voluminous or Grow Luscious and I find they work way better when layered over the fibre mascara)

2. My go to method at the moment: super coat the ends of my lashes with Maybelline One by One, twice, to build length and then really wiggle at the roots either MAC Extended play Gigablack lash or Revlon Lash Potion. I love Gigalash as it really gets in there, but it does take the curl out of my lashes so I find layering works best.

I have used a few mascaras that I didn’t layer (smashbox Full exposure, Estee Lauder Sumptuous, Yves Rocher lash plumping, Covergirl Lashblast), but most of them just don’t cover all the bases for me. And I tend to layer more when I’ve purchased a mascara I haven’t tried before and it sucks, so I make it work till it’s time to toss it! (Unless it’s really awful *Rimmel Scandaleyes*)

Annika Avatar

Yes. Mascara smudges on me like crazy whether or not I use waterproof. The only kind that doesn’t smudge is tube mascara. But that doesn’t volumize. So I’ll layer Loreal Beauty Tubes over PF Organicwear, or the Maybellibe that comes in the yellow tube with the animal print. I get the volumizing without the smudging.

I actually just did a blog post on my favorite mascaras today, so this is the perfect topic! I do layer mascaras, I really don’t have any favorites, but I like to try any and all combinations. The It Cosmetics Tightline lash primer mascara is GREAT for layering under anything. It has a super skinny little brush that really gets down at the base of the lashes and it separates and lengthens. The best part is that you can either stop there or layer on another mascara to add more drama!

totally! First I put on the 2 step Cover Girl Bombshell masara(s) and then either the new L’oreal Manga or one of my others.

Bare Minerals Lash Domination is AMAZEBALLS! Couple of coats and it looks like you have falsies on! For even more oomph, curl the lashes first 🙂

I adore MAC’s Haute & Naughty because it comes with two wands to layer with. I also have layered with Guerlain’s Cils d’Enfer mascara and Haute & Naughty (my husband cannot STOP smelling Guerlain mascara!). I was blessed with super long, thick, curled lashes, so I will occasionally be asked if I wear falsies due to my doll lashes. I just like exaggerating what I already have for fun.

Rebecca Avatar

Always! I typically use the Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black and Voluminous Million Lashes with each other or in place of one or the other the Loreal Butterfly Effect. There are some other mascaras I will just randomly layer, if one is lengthening and the other is volumizing.
