How Much Shimmer Can You Handle?

Laura Mercier Sequin Eyeshadow ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) are a shimmering, glittering formula of eyeshadow. It’s similar to Stila’s Jewel Palette, Urban Decay’s Stardusts, and Bobbi Brown’s Sparkle Eyeshadows. They all have this nearly creamy, slightly tacky, texture that’s chocked full of shimmer and glitter. It’s this new breed of glitter eyeshadow with a base that seems to hold the glittery bits together, so they don’t end up all over your face instead.

Laura Mercier’s Sequin Eyeshadows feel a little smoother, less glittery, but still incredibly shimmery. I found both shades I tried sheerer than Bobbi Brown’s (which are the most pigmented that I’ve tried), but infinitely more opaque than Urban Decay’s. Bobbi Brown’s are better bang-for-your-buck at $24/0.13 oz. but they’re both considerably more shadow than your average powder shade (I imagine this new glitter formula is heavier). However, neither of these shades are represented in Bobbi Brown’s line, so it’s more about what shade tickles your fancy.

  • Peacock is a darkened teal with a silver sheen and a gray base. It reminded me a bit of MAC’s Teal pigment, except more of a glittery finish than a frost.
  • Sterling is a silvery-white with a lilac sheen. Very icy and cool-toned–think MAC Vellum Eyeshadow. This one was sheerer than Peacock.

I was able wear these alone without any noticeable fallout throughout the day, but more importantly, they did not crease during the six hours I wore them.   I do prefer them over a base, just because it feels so bizarre not to use one!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Surprisingly, I like these. Especially peacock, which looks gaudy in the pan but swatches beautifully. I’m not really a glittery person though, so I guess I’ll just Lust them 😉

Peacock look pretty but remind me of a few MMU shadows I own, love teal/turquoises.

To bump up the colour I recommend apply to your primer when i has not dried and/or use a grease sticky base like NYX, MUFE or MAC has.

it’s funny ’cause it looks so much more pigmented in your swatch, but when I swatched it myself, it was so sheer I could barely see ANYTHING except for some random shimmer/glitter bits. I did use my fingers to swatch though, and I know from experience (via Stila’s jewel palette) that brushes and fingers may not work as well as, say, a sponge tip. but still…

Thank you so much for being honest about earning commission and where you got the product from..I love reading makeup blogs but it gives me a sick feeling in my stomach to know that the reviews are being done because they are PAID reviews! I realize that people have to make a living but it makes me sad to feel like something sneaky is going on. Thank you so much for your honesty!!

Hey Natalie,

I’m glad you appreciate it! We take reviewing very seriously and as a policy, have chosen to not do paid reviews. I will say in my experience I have not found many (particularly major brands) offering up money for reviews, so it may not be as common as one would think. Thanks a lot! 🙂

Peacock is gorgeous. It’s funny, I never paid attention to Laura Mercier before I started following your blog. Now I really want a few different things from her line including this shadow and the stick glosses. For all the money I’m tempted to spend because of your blog I feel I’m saving money equally plus the disappointment of colors that don’t show up and formulas that don’t perform. Thank you for that!!
