Laura Mercier Mini Caviar Stick Eye Colour Quartet Review, Photos, Swatches

Laura Mercier Mini Caviar Stick Eye Colour Quartet ($38.00 for 0.12 oz.) includes four, miniature cream eyeshadow pencils. The quartet is/was exclusive to Sephora, and they’re completely sold out online (but it’s possible it’s still available in stores), but just about every other retailer that carries the brand has a six-piece set available. The six-piece set has all four of these shades, plus Copper and Khaki. I really regret not getting the six set now! Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks normally retail for $28/0.05 oz. (or $560/oz.), so the four-piece set is a total value of $67.20, and the six-piece set is a total value of $100.80 (each of these is 0.03 oz.). The formula is touted as “long-wearing, transfer- and crease-resistant” with “rich color payoff.” I really liked this set of four; they worked really well together, but they were creamy, opaque, blendable, and long-wearing. I could actually wear them together as a look, which isn’t always easily achieved with jumbo pencils like these (they often dry down too quickly or work better as sheer washes or eyeshadow bases). All four shades wore well for nine hours before creasing slightly. The only downside is that the kit is pretty warm, and the colors are similar enough that while they blend seamlessly into each other, there isn’t a lot of contrast.

Rosegold is described as a “dirty pink with golden shimmer.” It’s a golden copper with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was fully opaque in one stroke and was easy to blend the edges or blend out for a sheerer wash of color. It wore well for nine hours before creasing. See swatches of dupes / view dupes side-by-side.

Moonlight is described as a “pewter.” It’s a golden bronze with a hint of khaki in the undertone. It had a frosted, slightly metallic finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff in a single pass, and the consistency was easily blended on the skin. See swatches of dupes / view dupes side-by-side.

Amethyst is described as a “soft mauve with pearl.” It’s a subtly warm-toned, medium-dark taupe brown with a frosted sheen. It had rich color payoff in one go, while the texture was creamy and glided on beautifully but remained blendable long enough to work with it–yet it didn’t settle into creases either. The color stayed on well for nine hours. See swatches of dupes / view dupes side-by-side.

Cocoa is described as a “chocolate brown.” It’s a dark, yellow-toned brown with very fine bronze pearl, but it has more of a semi-matte finish applied. It had nice pigmentation in one stroke, and it went on evenly. With a deeper shade like this, the ability to blend it out is so important, and I had no issues blending and using it in the crease. See swatches of dupes / view dupes side-by-side.

So glad these got a great review! Was actually just wondering if I’ve ever seen a 10/10 rating. I’ve had my eye on the 6-piece set for Nordstrom’s beauty event, but had decided I didn’t need it. Now I’m rethinking! I already have a mini of rose gold and full size of amethyst, and I love them. I do tend to layer them under powder shadows though.

Ryou Avatar

Oh, derp. that’ll teach me for reading/commenting while barely awake. Sorry for the mix-up! I’ll certainly pick up the six set. Thank you for letting me know!

Elle Avatar

Oh, I can’t believe I missed this. Not in the US so buying online at Sephora was the only option. A little bit sad now…

It’s beautiul šŸ™‚ Thanks for the glorious review!

I looove Caviar Sticks and I’m glad to see more of these here! For the moment I own Grey Pearl, Khaki, Amethyst, and Sandglow. I know I probably won’t stop here! Too bad this set is already gone. I might look into Moonlight though! I hope it won’t turn out too pale and frosty on me (I am probably a tad darker and more yellow-toned than you)!

Your eye look is sultry and beautiful. šŸ™‚ As much love as these caviar sticks get, I tried one before and literally…nothing. I was unsure what would happen but hoped for something great and it just did not work! Any ideas why? Bobbi Brown decided to do a similar thing with a set as well. Does anybody know how they compare? Hence, while beautiful, they don’t work for me. Not yet. My eyelids are so sensitive and will dry and peel easily.. I would love a shortcut stick that works for me! šŸ™‚

Lotus Avatar

You’re welcone! šŸ˜€ I bought the collection where everything was a limited shade of something pink, came with a mini Shimmerbricks and radiance primer, neither that I use.. Their gloss irritates my lips as well, the lip glacĆ© makes me itch! Regarding caviar sticks, I think it’s my eye skin.. It’s so thin and sensitive, peels easily even when it seems oily.. But think a full blown reddish peach beige color with it darkest in crease, lightest at top and corner.. They’re already done being that color already, abut I like to play! Not so if it will itch my eyes, though. I’m glad you and many others enjoy them! They’re quite beautiful, and I appreciate the info on BB sticks! šŸ™‚ Thank you! šŸ™‚

Germaine Avatar

Hi Christine! Thanks for the review (:
I would like to ask how does this compare to the Marc Jacob eyeshadow stick sets and which one would you choose if you had to?

Lotus Avatar

I’m sorry! Ouch! šŸ™ That’s why I haven’t yet tried one. That’s another of many experiences I’ve learnrd. Good to know! Thank you! šŸ˜€ (no more pop in your twinkle, ok?) šŸ˜‰

My eyelids are so oily, even with primer creams don’t work. Maybe next time I’m at the mall I’ll try them out with primer. They are awfully pretty…

Ryou Avatar

Rachel, I suffer from oily eyelids AND watery eyes, and I’ve recently discovered that waterproof, long-wearing cream eyeshadows is the answer to my problem — Powder eyeshadow just goes patchy in less than 5 minutes from the tears. My favorite is Maybelline Color Tattoo, as they hold up against humid 95 degree weather, holds up pretty well against tears, and I’ve recently discovered that it helps waterproof my powder eyeshadow as well. Do note that still wear a primer underneath, however, I don’t want to take chances.

Rachel R. Avatar

Thanks for the tips. I have a few of the Color Tattoos, and those do work. So do Colour Pops’ shadows. Powdered shadows work fine on me, as long as I prime first. But it’s nice to have variety/options.

Ryou Avatar

You’re very welcome! I’m going to add that another one that works for me is loosely pressed/hybrid shadows like Armani Eyes to Kill or L’Oreal Infallible. I’ve worn them to an outdoor concert in a very hot and humid tropical environment, and while the rest of my face was a mess, the eyeshadow didn’t crease at all. It did fade a little, though.

This set looks so tempting, but I tried Rosegold before and it looked hideous on me (looks great on you though!), so I doubt most of this set would work for me except maybe cocoa.

indira Avatar

Have you checked out Mally Beauty she has similar eyeshadow sticks that are awesome! Last year on qvc she had an amazing deal of 5 full size shadow sticks for $30. They don’t dry up and last forever! šŸ™‚

I absolutely love Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks!
I have KHAKI and adore it (was a gift from a friend. She said that it would enhance my hazel eyes and she was right)!
(PS: I know someone who have beautiful hazel eyes which would look stunning with KHAKI. Guess who?)
So glad to know that other shades have the same high quality. I’m going to try to get this set in stores and also order some of the six sets.

I purchased the 6 piece set from Nordstrom as soon as they were available. The LM caviar sticks are one of the most reliable makeup items I own. I love them and recommend them to everyone. I think I have most of them with my faves being plum, jungle (green) and sapphire (sapphire is my HG eyeliner, cream shadow). I have oily lids and must use a primer with my e/s. These beauties last a 12+ hr day – upon application 6 in the morning and still working – no creasing – after I get home around 7pm.

Jill Avatar

I have loved these since day one, so couldn’t resist the six piece set– bought 2 of those sets last year for gifts! My favorite sticks are in Amethyst , Orchid (which I think has been discontinued), and Burnished Bronze (fall 2014) I also am totally in love with Bobbi Brown’s shadow stick in Bronze– LE from last Chistmas. Its a beautiful coppery color (LM’s Copper is not as pretty) I really could use a second one of those! I’ll probably indulge in BB 3 piece shadow mini stick set too.

TN Avatar

Christine, how do you apply these shadow sticks? I tried swiping on directly then using my fingers to blend them out, but ended up with more product on my fingers than on my lids. Do you use a brush?

Angel Avatar

What type of brush do you use to move these colors around? I’m not getting even application with my fingers, and hesitate to mess up my good natural-bristle brushes that I use for powder shadows. I cleaned off a synthetic concealer brush, but the effect was flat….not feathered out as in your pics above.

Katherine T. Avatar

Wow, these are really gorgeous! I was eyeing this set but on the fence, because I already have so many cream shadows, but I should’ve jumped…

Lotus Avatar

Do these perform better than Pink Spark? I received that one in a special collection and it just does not work right on my skin, but I’m curious if it’s just that one? The lip glacĆ© burns me. It came in the same collection. A long time ago, I never had problems with their products.. Glosses, shadows, powder, it was fine. Did I get a dud?

Lotus Avatar

Well, it came in a special LE color-focused pink spark thing with a lip glacĆ©, radiance primer, can’t use, a shimmer block, so hard to open omg, and the giant stick. I’m very certain it is just my skin, which is very thin and extremely sensitive. For example, my eyelid and undereye area will peel, even if oily, and it’s already pigmented due to the thinness.. So your dkin seems pretty normal and durable and would have fun with these! I’m Glad you do! šŸ˜€ They are beautiful! I Think they are too heavy for me. Perhaps when I was younger before falling ill and my skin changing from such a long hospital stay.. The color is more or less a pinky-ER version of kitten in a caviar stick. But it sits & just needs wiped off of me. So I finally saw Maleficent and I am peeved that I did not participate in the MAC collection! Ebay is RIDICULOUS so that’s my rant šŸ™‚ Im sorry for my absence here, Christine. This time of year is pneumonia for me and I spend it doing all I can to prevent it from appearing full blown. (And more fun things!) But I do check in and look šŸ™‚ Miss you! xo <3 Oh, Conealer for @Wendy Has she tried the newest by terry, perhaps? I so hope she has found a solution! I think about what others say here when I’m navigating beauty across the Internet and hope all is good for everyone. I did get through to that Nasty VIB after waiting 7 hours? Hmm.. Thankfully, I was lent a laptop or I’d never have gotten in! Mobile was jammed tight up like a sticky jelly lid! I hope the negative experience many had will catalyze Sephora into creating better methods for which all can get in. If I had a ton of money, I would have taken orders for beauty insiders who got no deal this year. I remember when Sephora didn’t tax.. Nothing is free.. Rouge perk is free shipping irregardless of amount spent, which I love, but now lime crime.. The fact that better companies have run and Sephora has become less generous and not consistent is pretty sad. I heard that drugstore/beauty.com pulled a fast one too by yanking out brands and I’m so sorry! May I please ask when the beginning of the year sale is? Feb? It was quite helpful to be prepared. (To go elsewhere, or there!) šŸ˜› Thanks!

Stefanie Avatar

I found this set in store yesterday at Sephora and was able to get it with the 20% off for the VIB sale. I picked up 2 sets. 1 Set is for me and the other I’m going to split up as stocking stuffers for my mom and sisters. Really impressed! I would have grabbed the set of 6 from Macy’s probably if I didn’t find this one during the VIB sale.

Ignatieva Avatar

Christine, thank you so so much for the review.
Because of you I had my eye on this set for the longest time ever and yesterday finally gave in and bought the 6 caviar sticks in Sephora Singapore.
Have to say that it really is amazing, does not disappoint and it is just really that great !!
I really love your work and your blog keep on doing this <3
Big virtual hug from Singapore

Jen Avatar

Hi Christine, thanks so much for your recommendation! I picked up the six-piece set as the Sephora in my area doesn’t stock the quarter set, and I’m so glad I did! (Although I had my reservations as Khaki’s not really a color out of my comfort zone). The colors are impressively lasting and yet blend well for a quick smokey eye, and I love how portable and easy to use these crayons are! Thank you once again!
