Laura Mercier Cedar Sateen Eye Colour ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “warm brown with shimmer.” The Sateen formula is designed to be a “lightweight eyeshadow with a creamy powder texture” with “intense, luminous color” that has “superior blending” and “long-wearing, crease-resistant application.”
First things first: yes, the eyeshadow is broken; it slipped out of the bubble wrap it was shipped in, and this was the result, but the damage was contained, so I could still give you some idea of the color and quality of the product, even if it might be hard to look at.
Cedar is a warm, medium-dark brown with subtle gold shimmer and satin sheen. It has excellent color payoff, and it applies smoothly and evenly. The wear is great over a primer with no fading or creasing, but the formula is described as long-wearing and crease-resistant without mention of a primer, so I did try it that way as well. I get about seven hours or so without a primer, which isn’t bad, but it’s not a full day of wear. The creasing is very subtle, but the fading is more noticeable. I would still recommend wearing it over an eyeshadow base to get solid wear throughout the day.
It’s a lot like MAC Swiss Chocolate, except Cedar has a little shimmer. NARS Galapagos is a bit darker, while Inglot #327 is a matte version. Milani Rich Java is a bit more red-based.

Ooh, I’m a sucker for warm browns. I have Galapagos and Rich Java, so I guess I can skip this.
I appreciate your honesty in every single product that you review. This is what blogging is in its real sense. You are amazing.
PS
I usually get sucked into anything neutral, but I feel like there isn’t something special about the product. I like the addition of the shimmers, but for deeper browns like this, I would much rather that they be matte (to add definition) or completely metallic/shimmery (to create smokey looks).
Looks exactly like the sort of shade I cannot wear – just a bit too warm and reddened.
I just want to say that if this (broken eyeshadow) happens to anyone who orders from lauramercier.com, they should call. Their customer service is phenomenal and they are super nice over there. I once had an issue with an order and they replaced my items, no questions asked. Really really impressed. Now LM has become my favorite brand, and I know the good impression their CS left is one of the reasons.
This was from PR, not a retailer (as mentioned in the disclosure) 🙂
Yeah my comment was more for people who buy directly from LM.
Poor eyeshadow. Ah, well. The color still looks nice, though I’m not particularly into browns.
I’m actually glad you posted pictures as is because it broke makes me worried that it’s TOO fragile. I hate fragile shadows because it makes a huge mess. At $22 the LAST thing I want to buy is a single shadow that might now make it home intact.
An eyeshadow that is shipped 3,000 miles without bubble wrap that breaks would not worry me at all, honestly. I received two shades, and the one that was wrapped was fine.
Beautiful Shadow! I love LM in general but I feel like the longevity of their shadows is a bit lacking compared to other shadows at a comparable price.
Ugh I hate Laura Mercier stuff … for some weird reason, it irritates my skin awfully! Not just the face stuff, even the eyeshadows make my eyes all puffy and itchy :/ so however pretty this brown is, no Laura Mercier for me
Awwww poor shadow =( lol
I can only stare. I was going to take a look at the dupes you suggested, but funnily enough, you suggested Swiss Chocolate as a dupe & I’ve been searching for a dupe for Swiss Chocolate. 🙂
