Lancome Volcano Color Design Eyeshadow
Lancome Volcano Color Design Eyeshadow ($18.00 for 0.042 oz.) is described as a “muted taupe-grey” with a shimmer finish. It’s a great variation on taupe–a cool-toned brown with a grayish overcast and has more of a satiny sheen than an overt shimmer finish, but it doesn’t deliver on full color coverage. As far as similar shades, theBalm Selfish and NARS Grand Palais are close in color but much more shimmery. MAC Satin Taupe is much more intense and deeper.
Unfortunately, the color payoff is somewhat lacking; it deposits decent color, and I discovered it performed a little better applied on the eye, but it’s just not as good as it could (or should) be and definitely requires some packing and pressing of the color onto to the lid to get decent payoff. The texture is soft without being powdery or too fragile. The formula is designed to be long-wearing with “pigment-packed color” that “stays true for daylong wear.” As expected, the wear is not perfect without a primer–I get around eight hours, after that point there is very subtle creasing–but have no issues when it is applied over a primer.

This looks like a great neutral color for every day! Very pretty 🙂
It’s a great neutral!
This seems similar to Mac’s remotely grey that is discontinued.
I would say less blue, if I remember correctly!
This shade is always “out of stock” at the mall, mighty popular grey-taupe.
Interesting factoid 🙂 Thank you for sharing!
agree with you 100%. lovely color but disappointing pigmentation and longevity.
When I saw the photo I immediately had to think of MAC Satin Taupe, but Satin Taupe is way more pigmented, and cheaper.
Yes, Satin Taupe is a quite a bit different!
Too bad. This color looks super awesome. Wow, a C+???
It’s unfortunately sheer!
Oh man, I wish this was more pigmented! The color is gorgeous, but I hate fighting with bad eye shadow formulas.
Christine! If you’re looking for a nice taupe-y nail color that looks like this eyeshadow color, you should try Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Pro Nail Lacquer in 270 Steel Grey! 🙂
They used this eyeshadow on Kristen Stewart for her Nov. 2009 Allure photoshoot/spread.
Aaw 🙁 got so disappointed when i saw the swatch 🙁
It looks a bit more lilac in the pan?
I’ve been on the hunt for a good neutral grayey-purple for arges.
Preferably matte finish but it does not seem to exist =/
I know urban decay makes something similar to what I’m looking for (I think it’s called Heist?), but i can never find it anywhere 🙁
Any suggestions? 🙂
Whose brilliant idea was it to name a taupe “volcano”? When I read the word “volcano,” I expect intensity, and probably warm-toned red/orange/gold/black-brown.
If you think of the actual volcano, as in the exterior with the rocks/dirt, it’s more that color than the lava, which would be more red/orange 🙂
How does this compare to mac’s shale? This looks very similar- purpleish grey?
