Kat Von D Thunderstruck Metal Crush Eyeshadow

Kat Von D Thunderstruck Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “metallic pearl.” It’s a brightened, white gold beige with warmer undertones and a very subtle pink tinge to it. It had more of a pearly sheen than an overtly metallic one. It had good color coverage with a very soft, finely-milled texture that was dense and buttery while still wearing for eight and a half hours on me. NARS Andromeda (P, $29.00) is brighter. Make Up For Ever I414 Yellow Ivory (P, $21.00) is lighter, brighter. theBalm High Tide (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. Make Up For Ever I514 Pink Ivory (P, $21.00) is darker. MAC Just Gleaming (LE, $20.00) is darker. MAC Satin Ochre (Left) (LE, ) is darker. Chanel Poesie #2 (LE, ) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Pink Glow #1 (LE, ) is cooler. Charlotte Tilbury Fallen Angel #1 (LE, ) is darker, more muted. ColourPop Girly (P, $5.00) is less shimmery. ColourPop Girly (P, $5.00) is less shimmery. Buxom Satin Seduction (P, $12.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Thrasher Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “metallic gold.” It’s a brightened, rich molten gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a really creamy, buttery, and dense texture that blended out beautifully without losing any of its intensity. The texture has a really cream-like feel to it, but it was still easy to work with and didn’t thicken up on the lid. On me, it wore for nine hours before creasing. Too Faced Instigator (LE, $16.00) is darker. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #5 (P, ) is lighter, brighter. NARS Iskandar (P, $25.00) is darker. Too Faced Twinkle (LE, $16.00) is darker, more muted. Makeup Geek Liquid Gold (P, $6.99) is darker. Anastasia Metallic (P, $12.00) is darker, more muted. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl #3 (P, ) is darker. Makeup Geek Fortune Teller (P, $9.99) is lighter, brighter. Buxom 24KT Stilettos (P, $12.00) is lighter, more muted. MAC Old Gold (P, $21.00) is darker. Sephora Collection Girls Night Out (03) (P, $13.00) is darker. Sugarpill Goldilux (P, $13.00) is darker. See comparison swatches/ compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Synergy Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “metallic bronze.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a soft, gray-ish tinge–it’s almost a taupe brown, but it leans a little too bronze to really be a taupe in my eyes. The texture was soft, blendable, and a little less dense compared to some of the other shades, but it still applied really evenly and smoothly to bare lids, though it has a little fall out during application if you aren’t careful. It started to crease after eight and a half hours of wear. LORAC Mocha (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter. Too Faced Amaretto (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. Clarins The Essentials #9 (LE, ) is warmer. Makeup Geek Night Life (P, $6.99) is more shimmery, cooler. Make Up For Ever ME612 Silver Brown (P, $21.00) is lighter. Make Up For Ever D652 Celestial Earth (P, $21.00) is warmer. Too Faced Tiger’s Eye (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Laura Mercier Burnished Rose (LE, $23.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler. NYX Bedroom Eyes (P, $6.00) is more shimmery. Viseart Copper (P, ) is cooler. Cle de Peau Satin Moon #2 (P, ) is lighter. Tarte Pretty (LE, ) is less shimmery. Anastasia Gilded (LE, $12.00) is lighter. Kat Von D Depeche (LE, ) is lighter. Kat Von D Nephilim (LE, ) is lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Raw Power Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as an “iridescent intense garnet.” It’s a medium-dark, reddish-burgundy wtih warm, orange undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was very dense and thicker, and it made it prone to almost over-applying color–it looks like it is almost “powdery” in the swatch, but it’s really how it thickens. It is very pigmented, and I’d highly recommend applying with less pressure than you think to ensure a smooth, opaque result. It wore well for nine hours before fading. Le Metier de Beaute Fire Lily (P, $30.00) is more shimmery. MAC Cranberry (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. Urban Decay Gash (DC, $18.00) is less shimmery. MAC Crimson Tryst (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #2 (P, $9.99) is brighter. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #8 (P, $9.99) is lighter, brighter. Zoeva Warm Notes (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter. Tom Ford Beauty Pink Glow #3 (LE, ) is lighter. Makeup Geek Showtime (P, $9.99) is darker. ColourPop Drift (LE, $5.00) is less shimmery. MAC It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Make Up For Ever I824 Ocher Pink (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, lighter. Makeup Geek Enchanted (P, $6.99) is darker, cooler. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter, warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Danzig Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pearlescent violet.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark violet purple with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff with a fairly soft, smooth consistency that was just a smidgen firm in the pan compared to other shades, so it didn’t have the same buttery feel–smooth but just not as dense. The color translated well on the skin with the same intensity and blended out well. On me, it wore for eight hours before fading. It is one of the better purple eyeshadows on the market, and a cool-toned one at that. Inglot #439 (P, $6.00) is darker, warmer. Disney by Sephora Sea Witch (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory (DC, $8.25) is brighter. Disney by Sephora Snarfblat (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. Sleek MakeUP Bliss in Barcelona (LE, $9.99) is darker. Makeup Geek Pop Culture (P, $5.99) is lighter. Milani Primary #4 (P, $6.99) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. Urban Decay Ransom (DC, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker. MAC Pink Union #2 (LE, $21.00) is darker. Makeup Geek Caitlin Rose (P, $9.99) is lighter. Sugarpill Strangeling (P, $13.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Too Faced Sugared Violet #2 (LE, $16.00) is darker, more muted. Buxom Posh Purple (P, $12.00) is more muted. Hello Kitty Supercute (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter, more muted. Anastasia Iridescent Purple (P, $12.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer, lower quality. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to have “maximum pigment and extreme wear” with a “creamy and lustrous” finish available in eleven shades (though only ten are online at the moment). The texture of the majority of the shades is very soft, dense, thick, and creamy; they feel more like a hybrid of cream and powder than your typical powder. All ten shades were quite pigmented when pressed into the skin with a flat or firm brush (MAC 242), and while almost all of the shades applied well with your regular eyeshadow brush (like MAC’s 239), one shade didn’t work as well (Raw Power) as it was more sparkly and didn’t bind together as well. The formula was long-wearing on me with wear ranging from eight to nine hours. I found the texture comparable to Make Up For Ever Diamond/Metallic finish eyeshadows, though these are larger (0.10 oz. vs. 0.08 oz.)

My wallet is extremely upset that these are all getting glowing reviews. HALF the shades got a “Temptalia Recommends”?! That’s amazing!! I’ll definitely be picking up a few of these. I just wish they were cheaper/smaller – the colors are amazing but I’ll never go through a pan that big.

Raven Avatar

Hi! I was trying to compare urban decay’s honey to thrasher in the swatch gallery but was unable to do so since its discontinued i guess haha. But, I was wondering how does it compare?

Christine Avatar

I’m sure some are similar and some aren’t? I don’t have their full line. Anything I have that may be a dupe is probably included as we have Le Metier de Beaute swatches in the Swatch Gallery, so if there is a Le Metier de Beaute dupe, it would be included.

I think I’m covered dupe wise for Thunderstruck and Thrasher with MUFE I514 Pink Ivory and ColourPop Girly, plus UD Blitz in my Vice Ltd. And getting MUFE Silver Brown in the near future. So now waiting for a perfect purple dupe….LoL.
Btw, these pans are ENORMOUS! I saw them at Sephora yesterday, so even if, I could never hit pan on one of these! And I thought MUFE pans were huge, hahaha!

I was really hoping Raw Power would be a “truer” red. If it were, I most likely would have ended up buying several of these, as I can never stop at just one, LOL! I would think if any mainstream brand did a true red eyeshadow, this would be it…

xamyx Avatar

There have been several mattes available, but I have only one metallic/shimmery one, by Rimmel I think (it’s pretty old, and I’ve long depotted it). I think it is possible, but most brands seem almost afraid to try it. Stargazer has a couple of shimmery reds, but the brand isn’t really available here. I do have a few loose powders across a few brands, but I want more pressed options.

I’m planning to buy the Inglot gel liner in red, so maybe I’ll check out what they have…

Tracie Avatar

gosh! I feel kind of bad for MAC cosmetics. They are releasing Electric Cool next week. Who needs EC. When you have KVD? KVD is P, around the same price and better quantity and quality.

jaz Avatar

Welp. I was kind of hoping these would be bad , but alas they aren’t . The price is steep, but a few of these will be coming home to mama. *rubs greedy paws together*

Kitty Avatar

These look lovely! Christine, thanks for showing the ingredients! I’m so impressed that KVD lists all ingredients (no use of “may contain” or “+-“) and that chromium pigments CI-77288 and CI-77289 are not in these eyeshadows!

Marissa Avatar

legit i was hoping for this to get nice reviews!!! (for the price THESE SHOULD BE AMAZING and they areeeee <333333333333) i hope i can get a few of these… raw power metal is soooooo prettyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy y yy y y, and that purple is really impressive.

Rachel R. Avatar

Gorgeous stuff. Raw Power looks like one of those shades that will look more brown than red on me, unfortunately. Thrasher looks utterly amazing.

Nicole Avatar

I really am impressed. Do you happen to know if these can pop out of those cases to fit into a Z-palette? These look as if they might be giving my MUFE ARTIST shadows some competition. But, I would like to keep them in a palette. They probably would actually be some friendly players with my other shadows actually. This eye look is gorgeous. I’m going to file this one in my ” to copy” file in my memory. 🙂

xamyx Avatar

I would be very careful. I haven’t seen these particular shadows, but I know from her first singles (well, split-pan duos) from the early days, the pans were very thin, and I tried to depot one, but it started to crack…

Nicole Avatar

Thanks for the heads up. I don’t regularly depot. So, I’d probably would just leave these. I need to think of a better organization system for singles so they don’t get lost and/ or forgotten. 🙂

Stacie Avatar

I honestly don’t own a single eyeshadow from Kat Von D. What planet have I been living on??!! These are so pretty on your eyes. I love the way you combined the colors. Stacie xo

Brittany Avatar

Are these reminiscent at all of the Ardency Inn Manuka honey pigments? For some reason the packaging and finish of these really remind me of them, and I’m so deprived now the Sephora pulled them from their in store shelves (at least here in Canada)!

Risa Avatar

I’m so thrilled these are getting great ratings, especially since I impulse-purchased Raw Power the day it was released. I’m wearing it today and I love it! Not a true red, but it’s a beautiful burgundy, nonetheless. Since seeing these ratings, I’ve just impulse-purchased three more! Lol. Iggy, Paranoid, and Danzig are on their way. I can’t waittttttt.

wendy Avatar

I have two of these however i feel like they don’t finish metallic on me. When i dab it on with my finger it looks great but then i try to blend the edges and it looses its metallic look. Should I be using them wet or what because i’m considering returning.

Ginger Avatar

Between Thrasher here and 24kt Stilettos by Buxom, which is more similar to Blitz from the Urban Decay Vice Palette? I sold my palette and literally the only shadow I was sad to lose was Blitz. Forever seeking a dupe…
