Kat Von D Love Letter & On the Road Shade Shifter Eyeshadows Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Love Letter Shade Shifter Eyeshadow
Kat Von D Shade Shifter Eyeshadow ($16.00 for 0.09 oz.) is supposed to be a powder eyeshadow that shifts–as in a duochrome finish–that is water-activated. Sephora has two of the shades available as a duo for $15, and I think if you like either shade and don’t have dupes for them, it’s an exceptionally good deal. If you don’t like using eyeshadows wet, not to worry, as I didn’t find adding water to make much of a difference–wet or dry, both shades had good color payoff, soft, buttery textures, and were easy to blend.
Kat Von D Love Letter Shade Shifter Eyeshadow ($16.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “purple/maroon shift.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned plum with a frosted finish. The duochrome/shift is very weak with this one; it really just looks like one color most of the time. The texture was soft, buttery, and blendable, while the color lasted for eight hours before showing signs of fading. NARS Phoebe (P, $29.00) is cooler-toned, purpler. Too Faced Pop (P, $16.00) is darker. Tarina Tarantino Fantastical #1 (P) is lighter. Makeup Geek Sensuous (P, $5.99) is warmer. MAC Swelter (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Universal Appeal (LE, $21.00) is slightly warmer. Buxom Schnauzer (P, $18.00) is a cream product. Inglot #445 (P, $6.00) is slightly brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Kat Von D On the Road Shade Shifter Eyeshadow ($16.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “brown/green shift.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned brown with rich, orange-red undertones with a green shift/frosted finish. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft and buttery to the touch, which made it easy to use on the lid. This is the type of shade that has definitely been done before, some lean bluer/more teal, others are greener (like this one). Makeup Geek Insomnia (P, $6.99) is bluer. Kat Von D Queen (LE) is bluer, less metallic. Too Faced Girly (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC I’ve Got a Crush on You (LE, $32.50) is bluer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I purchased this set for the Love Letter shade. Already have multiple dupes for On the Road. Unfortunately the color payoff and duo-chrome effect was pretty disappointing 🙁 Oh wells.
I’m sorry to hear you had trouble with color payoff with Love Letter! The duochrome is subtle for me as well, but the quality of the eyeshadow (as far as eyeshadow goes) was fine for me. Bummer! 🙁
Ooooh might have to get the green one, but they are both lovely. I read somewhere that the green one may be similar to MAC Club though which I already have – what do you think Christine?
Club leans bluer/tealer on me with a less prominent shimmer/duochrome. MAC’s Green Brown pigment would be the closest that MAC has.
Oh cool – I realized these come as a set for $18 in Canada. I thought they were $18 each. Good deal!!
Yep! The set is a really good deal 🙂
really beautiful shades 🙂 but i find these so hard to work with 🙁 loveeee GIRLY but naaahhhh its difficult
Awww!
Love Letter instantly reminded me of Chanel ebloui but thats in a cream form! Also On the Road is pretty much MAC club from what it looks in your swatches! These are really pretty colors.. and the duo chrome I think will eliminate the need for another color to pair with!
Club has a bluish-teal shimmer/duochrome vs. green 🙂 This would be more like MAC Green Brown pigment if you have that!
Do you mean MAC Blue Brown pigment. dont think there is a green brown pigment by mac (or i could be mistaken) haha
Nope, I mean Green Brown, which is a discontinued. Blue Brown is different 🙂
I love the duochrome effect! This is a nice deal for $15
Definitely a good deal!
I picked up this set and I absolutely loved it. Swatched Love Letter didn’t look like it would be much, but it looks gorgeous built up on the eye.
Also, I didn’t even think about using them together! Need to try that.
I wasn’t sure if they’d work together, but surprisingly, I think they did come out all right!
I really wish the duochrome was more evident in the maroon shade. That would have taken this into must have territory. As it is, I already have MUG sensuous and if I decide to pick up one of the new Nars eyeshadows, it will be phoebe.
eeep..I thought 15 each.. $15 for the pair could change my earlier gripe. I wonder if you apply to cream base if it helps intensify results.
Normally, they’re $16 a pop but Sephora has a set of the two (both are full-sized!) for $15, which is really two for one… aka I was getting it, period, LOL! There are two other shades, but they are only available individually unfortunately!
Sounds like you are covered! They’re nice, but they’re dupable as well!
What are you wearing as your under eyeliner? It’s really pretty!
L’Oreal Green Ivy!
Beautiful e/s. They make great transitional colors into the Fall season.
They definitely give a very fall vibe!
I love this Eye Look… Amazing. I wish KVD was available to Australia :/
Me too 🙁
Thanks so much for swatching these! I skipped them because I figured I have enough similar colors. I wouldn’t even consider Love Letter a duochrome :/
Me either!
an MUA eyeshadow called ‘shade 12’ is extremely similar to ‘on the road’. just in case anyone in the UK was looking for a cheap alternate. = )
Thank you, Sam!
Hmm wow..maybe I got a dud, because my love letter didn’t apply the same way or feel very pigmented. Infact I was pretty disappointed with mine:( I like that combo of colours tho – very pretty! Ty!
You’re not the only reader who had that experience, Dee! Sounds like quality control issues!
I recently purchased this duo. Love Letter was very dry with very week pigmentation and no duo chrome on my eyes and when I swatched it on my arm. However, On the Road is gorgeous! The only other colors I have similar are from the Comfort Zone palette and vintage Roach from Urban Decay.
oops “weak”
Sounds like Love Letter has some serious quality control issues, because a few readers, like yourself, have had bad experiences with it and a few have had good ones! Never a good sign 🙁
I just ordered MAC Club, and immediately thought it looked like the green one..haha.
Club goes a little bluer/tealer, but they’re similar in concept!
They are lovely, but I’ve really settled more into neutrals these days, so it’s a pass. This being said, I own Prestige cosmetics eyeshadow in Bewitched, and I’d suggest that’s it a straight on dupe for On the Road.
Thanks, Veronica!
These are a good deal, even in Canada but I don’t think I’d get enough wear from either one to justify buying them and having more makeup (specifically, eyeshadow) “clutter” to deal with. And I know you’ve said that On the Road isn’t really that close to MAC Club but it looks plenty close enough to both Club and TF Label Whore that, even if the differences when swatched are considerable, once applied to the eyes, I can’t imagine the differences would be “that” noticeable. It’s funny – much as I love eyeshadow and can find just about any excuse to buy a new one, I often find that once they’re applied, a whole lot of shadows in the same colour family end up looking indistinguishable, one from the other….
It’ll probably depend on skin tone/pairing, I think! On me, I find they can look different as when it leans green, the base is really, really warm and almost orange-red, but Club is almost cool-toned instead.
I’m so glad that your review for this product is finally up! I wanted to purchase the duo but I’ve never tried any KvD products. But that purple cranberry colour is really calling out my name…
Happy to share!
The first is stunning.
It is a nice plum!
I just got them and they are gorgeous and super pigmented! Now just hoping the other two shades will pop up in a duo for the same price! 😀
We can only hope, lol! Would love them to do the other set as a duo…
On the Road Shade Shifter reminds me of the duochrome in the Wet n’ Wild Comfort Zone palette!
Definitely is slightly similar!
I actually found that if I wet my finger tip and used that to apply the shades rather than a brush the duochrome really stood out, and I got better color payoff.
I got the blue one as well as these two and the duochrome in that one is the strongest of all of them. I did a look last week with all 3 and got a bunch of compliments.
Glad to hear that the blue has a strong duochrome!
Very pretty look you created! I was very interested to read on the back of the pack in your photo about how to apply the shadow wet. I’ve never done that before, applying shadow with a sponge. It sounds difficult! Only time I use them wet is with a brush as a liner. Is it only certain powder shadows that can be applied with a sponge, or can any? What’s the benefit of that type of application? interesting
I think just about any eyeshadow can be used with a sponge – not all formulas are wet/dry, though!
Wow, those are really lovely!
They are!
I love the green in On the Road! I kind of feel like I might make my eye look moldy if I applied it all over the lid on my skintone (LOL, moldy eyes!), but that doesn’t stop me from liking the colour! If I had it I’d probably use it as a liner!
Maybe with the right complementary shades, it wouldn’t be so moldy-looking 😉
Of the 4 shades, these are the 2 I wanted since the initial release, but at $16 apiece I never indulged. At this price, I will definitely grab them. There is a dupe of the brown one in the Gypsy palette, which is another reason I passed on it, but the plum is worth it, and the brown is basically a “freebie”.
Enjoy, Amy! 🙂
We don’t get Kat Von D here. but love Letter is very pretty.
I don’t think we get Buxom either but I need to get my hands on Schnauzer! I have a Schnauzer of course I must have an eye shadow called that! I will now start Googeling to see if I cna find where to buy it.
This was quite OT, sorry 🙂
Or maybe I’ll not buy it. $24, can it be worth that? That’s from Amazon, can’t seem to find it anywhere else.
Still a fun thing to name eyeshadows after dog breeds.
Going to give my own Schnauzer a hug now. 🙂
It retails for $18 on Sephora (presently), but I don’t know that I would say it’s worth 33% more!
It was cute how they named the range after dog breeds!
At that price may have to pick them up. Particularly drawn to On the Road even though it’s dupable. 🙂
The price makes it a real temptation!
This looks like Mac Blue Brown pigment, which is awesome.
Glad ya liked it, Yelitza!
I’m actually really glad that you did a review on these because I honestly would never think to pick up Kat Von D eyeshadows. I think I tried one awhile ago (I got it as a sample or something), well over a year ago, and I wasn’t too impressed so I just always seem to walk right by any Kat Von D products in Sephora. It’s really the only brand that I can honestly say I don’t know much about (products-wise), but I guess I never gave it a real chance. These look great, and the most important thing for me is that they got such high marks for texture and pigmentation. They look really great in the swatches, and even though the longevity got a slightly lower mark, that’s one factor that can always be changed with a good primer (to an extent).
SO, what I guess I am saying is thank you for inspiring me to try out the one brand that I really have never given much thought to! I’m going to definitely pick up a couple of these shadows on my next Sephora trip 🙂
There are some really great Kat Von D products! I’ve had good luck with most of the range, though there are a few that are less impressive. Not too many major misses, though!
Happy to help, Amanda! 😀
