Kat Von D Autograph Liner Set (Holiday 2014) Review, Photos, Swatches

Kat Von D Autograph Liner Set
Kat Von D Autograph Liner Set

Kat Von D Autograph Liner Set ($32.00 for 0.22 oz.) includes eight shades of pencil eyeliner from black to purple to blue. All of the shades are part of the permanent range, and you can pick up singles for $10 as well (same size), so the set has a good value ($80). The eyeliner formula is fairly waxy, which helps it glide on and apply without tugging, but the color payoff is sometimes lacking, even when layered. The formula is supposed to last for eight hours and be waterproof, and some shades wear eight hours while others last six to seven hours. They’re more water-resistant than truly waterproof. It is surprising that the formula is so lacking, because Sephora Contour Eye Pencils are quite nice (and also $10), and other brands that have been produced by Sephora (e.g. Tarina Tarantino) had very nice formulas as well.

There were two issues I had with the set that you won’t see reflected in the rating, but they’re worth noting: there is no packaging of the set–they came in a cheap, flimsy plastic envelope with a clear front and black backing. It is not giftable as-is, and though it’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, it was a major surprise to see. The second issue was that Sephora originally advertised this as including Napolitano eyeliner, but alas, they included Puro Amor. It took a couple of weeks, but Sephora appears to have updated the product listing with this, though the promotional image still shows Napolitano.

Eyegasm is a green-ish teal with cool undertones and a pearly finish. It had sheer color coverage in a single stroke, which was buildable to semi-sheer at best. It lasted for six hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Proud Peacock is a blackened teal with a hint of green and subtle, warm undertones. It had a pearly finish with a light sheen. Again, the waxiness made it glide on, but it was sheer when applied. I was able to build up to semi-opaque color coverage, but it was uneven. This shade lasted for six hours and migrated to the outer corners. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

D.R.A. is a brightened, medium blue with a pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation in a single pass, and it applied smoothly and evenly. This shade wore well for almost eight hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Homie is a brightened, medium-dark violet purple with cool undertones and a pearly finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff in one stroke, and it was somewhat buildable but tended to cling to itself and look uneven. It lasted for seven and a half hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Piaf is a blackened purple with multi-colored glitter in shades of purple, silver, and gold. It was sheer no matter if I applied in a single pass or tried to layer it–the waxy texture made it just move the product around rather than build it up. This shade lasted for six and a half hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Immortal Love is a dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. This version is worse than one I tested before, as this was sheerer and waxier. It lasted for seven and a half hours, which at this point, was the rare bright spot in this set. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Puro Amor is a deep black with a mostly matte finish. It had a waxy, almost dry, consistency that didn’t really tug, but it looked dry on the skin. It doesn’t go on evenly, and it wasn’t very pigmented. It lasted for almost eight hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Black Metal Love is a deep black with silver sparkle. It was one of the more pigmented shades in the set, and it was buildable to opaque coverage in two to three layers. It had a creamier, less waxy, consistency. This shade wore well for nine hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Uuuuh no. Even value packs need SOME sort of packaging! The whole reason people buy them is to gift to someone else! I’m not fond of how these swatched… Might take a closer look at NARS Night Porter though!

You could use them as a stocking stuffer if you do actual stockings (like my family used to), but I agree for something that’s seemingly meant to be gifted it sure isn’t in traditionally gift-friendly packaging.

This is so, so….weird. Why on earth would they package it this way? Why are these SO bad? Comparing Immortal Toast to Sephora’s Tiramisu is beyond puzzling. Tiramisu is so wonderful and pigmented (I picked it up right away after seeing it on you somewhere, Christine and it’s probably my favorite brown liner of all time now) that it just makes no sense.

I wish I’d read this before I bought them… I was pretty insulted with the packaging, although I’ve had better luck with the formula – I got these because I get along well with Proud Peacock. The purples have been working well for me in the waterline.

KVD quality control is so frustrating, since it’s the one brand that always releases cool colors as more than an afterthought. And they match my aesthetic. Do better KVD.

It seems like a number of Kat von D products are getting poor grades lately. I wonder what’s up with them. They must test the products before launch. Do they just not see the problems? Curious

The packaging is so odd! I mean, if the pencils were stellar, then you’d totally just find a nice way to package them up for a gift, or not care if they were for you. As it stands, it kind of reinforces the ‘afterthought, vibe, LOL! There are some pretty colours in this set (especially Piaf) though. I wish they were mre waterproof and opaque!

Exactly! My guess is they had excessive stock or wanted to do something last minute, so it was like, “hey! throw these in a bag!”

This is sad πŸ™

I had this set on my wishlist even though I remember you giving Proud Peacock a bad review previously, because I like the smaller size of these pencils and the set isn’t half neutrals like many eyeliner sets. I’m really disappointed in all the sub-standard products KvD has been releasing lately, for the price point they should be better.

Right? I have Glamorous Thief otherwise I’d probably buy DRA as a single. I was hoping Eyegasm would be nice but I guess I’ll just have to buy Intro(vert) instead πŸ™‚

I have last year’s set that I found at TJMaxxx for only $6.99 (check the stores, ladies!) and the quality was amazing to me. So much so, that I’ve replaced all of my current favorites for them. Super long-lasting and pigmented, too. The packaging is gorgeous, with original art by KVD (I haven’t thrown out the box, way too cute). Shame this set seems to be lacking, and the packaging is odd!

Oh wow, this is a surprising let down – its too bad and strange like you say as the Sephora brand pencils (eye and lips) are pretty decent for the price.

I was thinking “at last, a dupe for Intro(vert)!!!” But sadly the quality is 100% not there… boo. I’d rather splurge on the actual Marc Jacobs liner than settle for a $10 one of these. I have Urban Decay Ether too and I really love that color, but again the quality isn’t there for the Kat Von D liners. I’ll pay for the good stuff πŸ˜€

Oh, dear. Only 3 of these even begin to be acceptable to me. And…not even a box? Paper is cheap and Kat is an artist who could draw her own design. Easy pass.

Yes. The bag strongly reminds me of the makeshift “packaging” I’ve had to make for misplaced items found while downstocking (not at Sephora, but other retail)–can’t find the original box? Stick it in a bag and slap an SKU on it!

I’m actually happy this got a poor rating…otherwise, I would have spent more money when I’ve already bought so much this holiday season.

Oh no!! What happened with KVD these days?! Everything is just going down…the haliday eyeshadow palette, then this! It used to be my favorite brand, now I am afraid I have to look else where…sad…

lol these sure are some crappy eyeliners. Looks like they would hurt to apply.

I’m telling you, Kat von D is clearly in the struggle right now. Those awful lipsticks, the horrible star studded palette, and now these damn eyeliners.
We should all send a teddy bear and a balloon to their corporate headquarters and to their lab. We can’t stand by and let them spiral any further.

Yikes! How embarrassing and disappointing. Piaf looks so much like something I would absolutely love but an “F”??? And most of the others don’t seem to be a whole lot better. Sad.

The “not giftable as is” comment sort of makes me feel like I was born in a barn. I come from a family where wrapping paper was folded neatly and reused 10 years in a row (with obvious bare marks where the tape from previous uses stuck too well). My dad even went out of his way to present things without flair, fanfare, or special presentation of any kind because he was really proud of his gift-giving skills, and that — to him — was the important part.

I get what you’re saying; i.e. that you’d expect more care on the part of KVD, but for the money, it seems reasonable to me. At least, it would be if the formula actually worked.

I think it’s more about expectations, when every other set I’ve seen this holiday season has come in a box where each product has its place, all labels intact, information about the product, that this very much is the opposite of that. The value is definitely there, but it’s almost more like a bundle of products on sale vs. a gift set, I think. I usually prefer gift bags, since people can reuse them!

Why do all eye pencils have such poor quality lately? I’m so disappointed with Kat Von D. and Urban Decay! I wish those great L’oreal ones had a bigger color range..
