Is there a product you swore you wouldn’t buy but ended up buying?

I don’t know if I was adamant about not buying it, but I remember being reluctant to purchase the Sisley primer everyone raved about a few years ago (it wasn’t worth it).

Sadly, some of the PML Mothership palettes….usually I fell in love with a couple of the shades and the rest mostly went unused….I do use them, but not enough to warrant spending that much on them. Unfortunately I caved on more than one!

Well, I decided I was boycotting Hourglass once I realized (thanks to Christine’s price breakdowns and comparisons) how badly they were ripping off customers with their even pricier than regular holiday releases of little blush/highlighter palettes. I did break down, however (talk about weak-willed), once I tried their Veil loose powder. It is so lovely that I really wanted it and so bought it, even though I’m disappointed in myself for my lack of “stick-to-it-ness”.

Sisley black rose face oil. Sisley blush sticks. I found these on special on the Costco website and they were not anything special. The blush stick while pretty didn’t have lasting power. I’ll use them up but they are on my do not buy list. The Sisley bronzer I fell in love with but for the most part, I don’t think their products are dynamite.

It’s very important to me to support cruelty free brands but sometimes I cave in and I have some Armani or Pat McGrath to name a few because I also got some curated sets where some of the brands included were not cf.

ANY dry-down liquid matte lipstick! But then I did try out 2 KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks just to see if I could tolerate them…the greige-y one can look nice in winter, but I really have to prep my lips like crazy, and carry a sheer gloss JIC it begins to feel tight and uncomfortable. The other shade just looks utterly hideous against my olive undertone, the infamous K-Dub,
Later on during the pandemic, I did buy a handful. Some, like MAC Siempré Selena and ones by Sephora’s house brand felt way nicer on.

I swore I’d never buy eye cream bc I was convinced it was a scam and my regular moisturizer worked just fine under my eyes. A few yrs ago, I tried a deluxe sample of the Belif Peat Miracle eye cream that came with an Ulta order and was so impressed with how plumped my under eyes looked and how beautifully my concealer wore that I ordered the full size after the 2nd use. Unfortunately, Belif recently discontinued the Peat Miracle line, which is the story of my life, so I’m on the hunt for a new one.

Hi Lacey! I love the original Eye Bomb and hoped it would be a great alternative but it gives me milia. That’s my issue with eye creams, they’re either too rich and give milia or they’re too light and don’t provide enough moisture. The Peat Miracle was right in the middle and has been difficult to replace

Yes, I kept hearing Nivea in a little round tin was the end all and usurped every high end moisturizer. I find the tin at CVS brought it home and right away i knew something was off when I saw almost a piece of tin foil over the cream. Woweee was I shocked at the foul, intense smell of it. I did put a dab on my hand and it took Dawn detergent to get the grease and smell off my skin. I took it outside to my trash cans I didn’t trust tossing it in the house.

Charlotte Tillbury “pop shots” for Holiday last year. I swore I would not pay that outrageous price. I think the were $36.00 for a single shadow. I ended up buying 3! I am glad I use them all the time:)

A couple of products – Laura Mercier’s Translucent finishing powder – it was extremely expensive – $70 and in the end offered so little product that I was really disappointed that I spent so much on something like that.
And I thought I would never spend a lot of money on an eye brow pencil either, but decided to try ABH’s Dipbrow (I think it was called) and again, hideously expensive – $48, and found to my dismay, it was one of those wind up pencil thingys that I loathe. Not that great either.
So I have learnt a lesson or two here – stick to what you know works at a much more reasonable price.

Pat McGrath Celestial Nirvana (her latest big holiday palette). Looking at it online, I was certain I didn’t need it. I recently found a pristine one at TJ Maxx and snapped it up. It’s beautiful and has me really inspired to create different looks with it.

Same. I’ve been using all my Nudestix shadow pencils. I’ve been trying to make a point of using a different eyeshadow palette every time I do my eyes, that it really doesn’t take as long as I thought it would, even if it’s just a crease color and lid color. I have ND Glam too and it might be the next one I use 🙂

I haven’t bought liners in YEARS because I bought a few UD liner sets and still love them and Mildew is beautiful but my favorite “if I was on an island” is UD Stash, an olive green liner that’s gorgeoussssss (it also matches my eye color). Definitely check it out. 🙂 It might go with the Yucca palette too

Lacey Avatar

Hi Janeen, agree on Stash being an HG eye pencil! It’s the perfect bronzy-olive and I do have half a pencil lol. Along with Mushroom, another HG UD pencil, the perfect taupe shimmer. I like the Mildew one because It’s a brighter mid green olive. Now I’m thinking Overdrive and Electric Empire will also work with Yucca palette.

I haven’t bought it yet, but I’m planning on getting the GXVE glitter loose eyeshadow things soon-ish. Every time I try to swear off the line I swatch it and remember that a lot of the products are actually nice. The name is stupid and the initial release palettes were really boring but I think my first impression wasn’t very good.

When I read Christie’s reply, I cracked up laughing! Same for me! As a special education teacher’s aide making $26,000 a year (this is my 17th year of doing it) I have no business owning and still buying huge amounts of makeup that, quite frankly, the children couldn’t care less about!
