Is there a limit to how much you'll spend on a beauty product?

Is there a limit to how much you’ll spend on a beauty product? Where do you draw the line?

Yes, definitely, though my line seems to shift, depending on the type of product. It’s one of those things where I’ll know it when I see it, LOL!

But then I wouldn’t spend a arm and a leg for my skin care either, over 300 is too much that’s what I should have said in first comment

Melissa Avatar

The Guerlain Météorites was the most expensive makeup I have ever purchased and I love it.

Wouldn’t go higher than that for makeup. However, skin care is another story. I’ll spend what I have to spend to have quality products.

Nunuiviet Avatar

I don’t spend over 300$ for a face cream. I give very high importance to the products I put on my face but over 300 $ is way too ridiculous for me

There was at one point, but those limits seem to be moving upward. A year ago I would’ve put myself in psych ward for buying a $30 lipstick, but those days are long gone. I don’t mind paying more from a brand that is known for good quality, and I will always pay more for a skin care product that really works for me.
I guess my only limit is how much my father is willing to put into my checking account! I’m an unemployed college student with a very generous dad 🙂

Jessi Avatar

I’m the same way! I have a different limit on drugstore items than I do on high end ones. Also, my limit on higher end palettes is about $50 but it’s a lot lower for single products. But I agree, I go by gut more than anything.

Sam Avatar

My limit depends on if I can still eat with the money left for te rest of the month. Lol soo nothing more than 300. Unless I save up for months. And the 300 has to be more than one item because if I am spending almost food money it better be worth it. And I am in Australia so when things get here it’s like double or more what u pay in America. Which sucks butt. :/

I wouldn’t spend more than $40 on a single product. If I want something that’s over $40, I’ll wait until there’s a sale. Most beauty products are just not worth spending that much.

Dusty Avatar

no… i think the question should be: “is there a limit to how far you’ll go to get the money to spend on a beauty product.”

if i find it, i’ll let you know 😛 lol

Rosanna Avatar

I’ve spent most on foundation at $55 CAD for NARS Sheer Glow foundation (Chanel is cheaper here at $48 for most of their foundations). I haven’t spend on any beauty products over that but I still defintely crave for products over that amount.

$30-$40: Yes! (with good reviews and recommendations)
$50-$65: I’ll think about it…& save
$66-$80: It can wait..
$81-$100: Off the charts…for a long while….XD
$100+: Forget it!

Maribeth Avatar

Yes. I had a makeover with a Dior artist and he used Capture Total eye cream that felt immediately wonderful on my eye but was $82. While the MUA insisted it would last me a year I couldn’t justify spending that much. I limit @ $50 although I may purchase a Dior or Chanel quint if it is really something I love- but not lately!

CeeBee Avatar

I love that eye cream and regularly pay over $100NZD for it – SO worth it! (well, to me anyway. I hope you can find something equivalent for less $$ – and if you do, please let me know, LOL!)

Lexi Avatar

definitely – and lately, that has been making me sad!!! I desperately want to try Edward Bess, and Rouge Bunny Rouge…I’ve even had dreams that I’m going to the UK (which can happen for work)!
also, with skin care – I really want to get Exfolikate, but just can’t pull the trigger!
and sadly, what I’m finding is the more I’m lemming something and end up taking a chance on it – the more likely it is to not be all I had built it up to be, and it goes back 🙁

Shilpa Avatar

Except for creme de la mer, I don’t go above $75ish for skin care.

For make up i don’t think I’ve paid more than $60 for an item ever…

Vijaya Avatar

There’s definitely a line, for me, but I have to feel it out. $30 for a lipstick is fine, depending on the brand, but $60 for a single lipstick is too much. $50 could be fine, though.

Anitacska Avatar

No, not anymore. Although I think around £100 is still just about my limit, since that’s the price of the Guerlain voyago powders, any more than that is really ridiculous. 😀

Patrice Avatar

I have a about a $50 limit on everything skin care included. Anything over that and we have problems…

The most expensive product I have purchase was Clinique Dark Spot corrector(which is amazing BTW!!) and $38 for my Soy Face Cleanser…

tracy Avatar

no more than £25. the dearest item lately was the wonderwoman mac pink power, i actually dont like the product and will be giving it away. im using and not buying at the moment, project 200 pan ha ha.

tehteh Avatar

yes I do…I almost never buy any designer makeup…I do lust for it, but I can never convince myself to shell out the money…

xoxo

Lucie Avatar

Not really. I work hard for my money and like nice things, so I don’t mind paying $60 for a Cle de Peau lipstick because it makes me feel good and I know I’ll use it a lot. However, I am loath to spent more than $20 on a skincare product. I know, it’s bad, skin should be what I invest in! But skincare is just less…fun. I’m seventeen so age isn’t hitting me yet, and I am still drawn in by ‘ooohhhh! Shiny!’ versus ‘practical’ items like a good eye cream or cleanser.

JJ Avatar

It really depends for me. Skin-maybe $200 is my limit. Anything under $200, like a Clarisonic. I think that’s worth it. The other stuff just depends.

Roo Avatar

LOL, I know about that ever-shifting line!

I won’t buy what I can’t afford meaning I won’t carry debt or forgo more important things for my beauty purchases. I’m willing to pay a lot for skin care or foundation/concealer that work for me but I’m extremely demanding and I want samples first or to be sure I can return it if I’m not happy. I’m bought a few pieces of very expensive make-up that I thought were very special but not on impulse and not without considering cheaper alternatives. For brushes and tools, I’ve learned to invest in the very best I can afford and never regretted it.

Courtney Avatar

Definitely. It depends on the product type and how big it is. I find Mac prices to be reasonable, but at times I’m all “$20 for blush? Seriously?”

Bekka Avatar

I’d go up to $20 on a single eyeshadow, $50 for a good foundation or palette. Hair care and face care gets a much lower budget, but I have made exceptions before.

Lori Avatar

It really depends on the product. For really good skincare I would spend as much as necessary but makeup I can’t see spending more than 50 on just a single item. Now if it was a palette or complete kit that I would spend a little more on. I just think skincare is more important.

Chester Avatar

€30 ($45) for face and skin care products per item.
€20 ($30) for lip products.
MAC’s current price of €17-19 ($28) for an eye shadow is definitely the end. 🙁

brittany Avatar

you bet I do. I only feel its necessary to spend extra on face makeup or face products in general. I would never spend $30 on a chanel or dior nail polish per say when people see my face more than my hands. Nobody probably really cares about the nail brand anyway.
yup, you bet. I only spend extra on my face for a great foundation, powder, bronzer, or blush.

Salvinia Avatar

My spending limit’s gone way up since I moved to Australia, since makeup here costs twice or three times what it does in Canada. I have no problem paying $35-plus for a lipstick or lipgloss, and I definitely shelled out $62 (twice!) for Nars blush without batting an eye, but in Canada that would have been out of the question. Back then I didn’t mind paying $15-20 for eye and lip products and up to $25 for blush, but that was my limit, for sure! It helps that I make a lot more money now than I did in Canada, of course.

Amanda Avatar

I feel the same way! I think the most I’d spend on a single product is maybe $50 on a foundation if it was really worth it. Everything else -eye products, blush, lip products, have to stay under $30 for me. I usually try not to get up to that price though, but things like NARS blushes come close. I’d also spend a little more on palettes or sets, but it depends on the quality.

Overall, it really just come down to what type of product it is, positive reviews, and quality.

Deb Avatar

It depends on the product and how much you get, but in general, for a palette, I don’t think I’d spend over $100. For lipsticks, glosses, and single eye shadows, I won’t go over $25. For foundation, I cap it at $50, and for blush/powders probably $35 is my limit. But I might make exceptions when I’m really excited about something. I just got a Butter London nail polish for $14, and I never thought I’d spend over $5 for nail polish just a couple years ago!

Andrea Avatar

Id say, lipstick, eye shadow, blush- $30 each or lower. Foundation- $50. Skincare- $100. Unless its an electronic, or brush set. It also depends on price. A chanel lipstick once a year but mostly stick to nars, mufe, mac.. Etc.
