How will you approach beauty purchases in 2021?
For me, I can’t imagine it’ll be that different. I have been focusing a little more on eyes and not worrying as much if I am hitting my “quota” on lip products to some degree, but I haven’t dialed down lip product purchases in general (there have always been an excess amount that I can’t cover!).
That’s a good question. I will not be going back to pre-pandemic levels of makeup, but I am also at an age and spot in my life where I could cheerfully give up even more and that largely depends on where I land in terms of lifestyle. Big changes are afoot…
I wrote some loose rules in my new budget planner and reviewed this year’s purchases to see what worked out and what didn’t. About 30% of my purchases this year were “fails.” Meaning I still have the product but don’t use it or like it as much as I thought I would. So I take note of the product type and brand to try to learn from the “mistake.” I spent a lot less on beauty this year than any other recent year, but still made a lot of superfluous purchases (that 30%). This year I’d like to spend even less overall so I need to focus on what’s going to be a “win” purchase and what’s going to be a “risk” purchase and try to steer myself away from making any of those risk purchases at all.
I plan on not buying lipsticks. I prefer wearing glosses, balms, and sheer lipsticks these days.
I will be buying more from indie and Black owned brands. Danessa Myricks has some very interesting stuff, although I have not been really interested in new makeup for months now. If I have to go to a major, I will prefer Nordstrom because of their new recycling opportunity.
With less spending money for it, much more cautiously and thoughtfully. I know that I really need to be more mindful when it comes to inadvertantly buying dupes, for one thing. Also, I will likely be spending more on skincare than color cosmetics, or so I hope.
Much the same as usual, we have much less pandemic issues in New Zealand so face masks aren’t required in day to day life, but I’ve been leaning more towards sheer and blotted lip colours and tinted balms for summer anyway. I’ve also been experimenting with pastel glitters on my eyes, which has been fun, especially for the festive season.
My aim in 2021 is to better utilise what I already have, instead of purchasing online or from overseas on a regular basis but then I also probably need to set an appropriate financial goal to save towards, instead of spending a good percentage of my disposable income on beauty products, which doesn’t directly benefit anyone other than me. It was going to be travel to Europe but given the current global situation, not so much!
I would love to have a very low buy year in 2021. I went a little overboard this year, and am becoming overwhelmed with my collection.
I’m probably going to do a low buy for 2021 — I went overboard this year, especially in the last two months, with purchases. I was responding to both a panicky feeling of not being able to access stuff in the future, and also a “who cares, the world is ending” feeling. At this point, I have a number of products I really like and only a few areas where my collection needs to be rounded out. I actually need to destash — both makeup and clothing — so that will be happening in the new year. I’m hoping to focus on techniques and learning to get the most out of the makeup I already have.

I plan to stick to the same pattern as I did for the past 2-3 years. Only have one of each item (except color, but even for those stick to eyeshadows and face powders that fit my dual sided custom made palette), open new things only as I finished the new ones, try to purchase strategically on sales, always choose the option I like to use the most (even if it’s a splurge and cheaper dupes exist), always invest in skin care, try to buy as much as I can from brands I can truly recycle.
I just like my minimal approach better, and personally I never feel limited with this (definitely this approach won’t work for most people).
Not sure about 2021, but maybe in 2022 I’ll get back to actually purchasing and wearing lipstick.
Cut back on foundation. I found using a few dots of concealer or a sheer tint plus powder has been just fine. I’m happy with the blush shades I have, so no more of those.
I plan to focus more on skincare rather than makeup. I just added retinol back in after 3 years of absence due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Also with mask wearing still in the forecast for at least part of next year, I find I have to focus more on keeping my skin clean and washing it when I get home instead of removing makeup/etc…. before bed.
My beauty purchases for next year will most likely be the same as this: careful and measured. I only buy what really suits me (like the Glam palette) and the lipsticks in shades I wear. As for the basics – I only purchase them when I run out of something.
I expect I will be buying mainly high end eye palettes except for a sprinkling of Colourpop. For lipsticks I will continue to experiment but with the possible exception of Becca and Lisa Eldridge I haven’t been able to top the L’Oréal gold bullets. I mean, seriously trying to top Mica is fruitless.
Oh wow I used to love those L’Oreal lipsticks but have forgotten about them. There was an orange called Volcanic that I LIVED for.
About the same-I only ever buy what I actually like and feel drawn to within my budgetary planning.
I’m planning to go on no buy in 2021 !!!
