How important are customer reviews when you make a purchase?

In general, I do use them, but for beauty, I find it requires a lot of sifting and with beauty already being a more “your mileage may vary” kind of category, I don’t always use reviews when making a purchase.

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

I usually peruse the reviews, but keeping an open mind that some are incentivized..Also, having a product work for you is so individual, depending on your hair or skin coloring, age, dry or oily skin…..a foundation might look spectacular on a 20 year old but terrible on a 50 year old, so if you see a rave review, there is a lot to take into consideration….still as long as they are from legitimate buyers they are worth reading to get a base line idea……..

I wish I could find them useful… but most times I don’t. Most customers write reviews only for incentives (and I’m not talking paid or receiving free products, just th simple entry on a raffle), they are short and don’t actually say anything.
Rarely these days I see customers that actually detail how they use the products, talk about long time use, even specify their beauty routine or skin type.

Same philosophy here, Nancy! A lot of times I also peruse the negative reviews to see if there’s a pattern but sometimes it still seems like a shot in the dark, ha.

If I have a particular concern I have about a makeup product, I’ll consider verified purchase reviews. I like to read fragrance reviews on fragrantica, then get samples or otherwise test a fragrance before purchasing. I don’t trust a lot of the reviews from the foreign clothing companies; I suspect they’re made-up even from claimed verified purchasers, as they often don’t match my experience of the item at all after I’ve purchased it, and the review somehow rings hollow to me. Many of the foreign companies have a lot of what we would consider unethical advertising practices, such as garment does not measure as stated, or saying “no worries we accept returns”, but in actual practice it costs more to send the item(s) back to its country of origin than the cost of the item(s), and they will admit that if you get into conversation with them. If you purchase something, it’s basically not returnable, but they have your money, end of story.

I quite enjoy them. It’s how I’ve learned of new products and while preferences, needs and experiences are all so individualized, reading reviews (non-incentivized ones – incentivized ones actually really turn me away from a product) is still something I find helpful and I also enjoy it.

Very. I like in depth reviews, with photos and proper descriptions, not just ‘you gotta have this’ types. I pay more attention to verified ones as well.
