I still gravitate towards purples, greens, brights, duo- and multi- chromes, and rosy neutrals, but my application has changed somewhat due to aging. I find I appreciate taupe more, and I downright enjoy shimmery, silvery taupes.
I’ve always liked coppers and oranges, but with my latest hair color, I’m preferring them as my neutrals, as rosy neutrals and cooler browns don’t look great.
I am finding myself still using color like you. I am older too, so I can’t pull some things off because I now have a bit of a hood now. I use taupe as my first layer and then I pop in a purple or a green. I love my duo and multi chromes too, but I have to be careful, if they are really textured, I have to be very careful because they sometimes crease in the hood. I never really could pull off black eye liner, but I have a nice collection of UD 24/7 liners. I like to layer as well, and I find myself using formulations that aren’t too powdery because the fallout ends up in the lines I have under my eyes.
I also let my hair go grey, so I am using more cool colors now because the reds and coppers I used to use just don’t suit the color of my hair. I am pondering throwing on a red Cellophane so I can wear some fiery colors again this summer.
I have to say pretty much like you. I’m heading towards 60 and still want color, color, color! I sometimes regret toning down the color, but I can see that I look better if I do and like you move to cooler, nude smokey looks.
I’ve loved colorful eyeshadow for the last several years, but I’ve found particular joy in unusual color combinations and unique multichromes in the last couple of years.
The color hasn’t changed. I’m still into cool taupes, but I used to use only mattes, and now I like satin, pearly finishes, e.g. MAC Satin Taupe.
MAC’s Satin Taupe is a classic. I wonder how long until they DISCONTINUE it like they seem to do with all their best products!
(I think it was in one of those recently released palettes and it looked NOTHING like the Satin Taupe from their original line).
Not really – my preference is still primarily for shadows in neutral or cool neutral shades and with some shimmer to them (except for shades like MAC Cork or Wedge, Stila Puppy – shadows for subtly defining my crease or for blending out). I have made a point of trying to branch out into a bit more colour and some of the more burgundy browns (UD’s Weirwood Leaves opened the door to this and I’ve had a few shadows – Tarte Sinful, ABH Rosette and Dior’s New Look #3 – that do work for me). But that’s about “it” as far as changes in colour preferences go.
Most definitely! When I was younger I gravitated more towards vibrant colors. Now I usually stay in the taupe, gray, brown tones along with some burgandys I still love some shimmer and metallics but have found that bright blues, greens etc just look silly on someone over a certain age unless they are very muted……but that’s just me…..
As I hit my 40s I’m more interested in soft pinks, champagnes, and peaches. I live by my matte browns for contour.
Other than being far more experimental with multichrome eyeshadow formulas, particularly ones that apply with a silkier shine as opposed to glittery, my actual color preferences still lean purple, plum, burgundy, rosy browns, taupes, plus warmer greens, teals, and bronze shades.
And you look good in them! When you shared your age once, I couldn’t believe it. I, like you, prefer those colors, but due to my very dark undereye circles and eye glasses, they just won’t let me get away with darker, yet vibrant colors as before.
Thank you so much, Jane! It’s weird, but instead of lots of fine lines and dry skin, I still get breakouts occasionally and an oily t-zone, which seems very odd to me.
The only reason why my under-eye area doesn’t appear dark is 100% due to caffeine eye cream and a really good concealer, though. Without? My eye area is not so cute! More like 🦝
Very little. I never got on the warm tone trend because they make me look sick so my collection has remained pretty consistent, comprised mainly of neutrals and purples. I still use neutral mattes more than anything as I’m the head of talent acquisition for a large financial services firm and the industry is quite conservative, especially for women. Minimal makeup during the week has been the norm for years and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
I stopped doing multiple shadow designs when the pandemic began. At the present time, the way I used to do my eyes seems garish. I use one shadow only. Saves time, and I’m not tempted to buy expensive palettes.
Oddly, I too agree that the pandemic (and age) impacted my application and “garish” would also be the word that I hate to admit is how I try to force my desire for color on my eyes. Sometimes, I just do it and think of it as art (and don’t go out) 😉 Ha!
I’ll wear a larger range of colors! Before, my preference was to wear warm brights- oranges, burgundy, peaches. I’ll now wear the whole rainbow and especially favor purples, blues, greens, and pinks.
Yes, my eyeshadow preferences have changed over the past couple of years – I am using more rosy copper shades, bronzes and rose golds, often in conjunction with a pop of blue, green or teal (thanks to your stunning palette of On the Horizon Light!)
I still love color now in my 30s as much as I did in my 20s, but now I use color differently: Sometimes a “monotone” (or varying hues of the same color) look, sometimes neutrals with a pop of color (especially if I’m in a rush), sometimes I even try new techniques!
I love eye shadow it has always been my favorite part of make up. I mostly stick to neutrals.. cream, soft brown, champagne (love satin, shimmery textures) , dark browns to define.. even dark brown eye liner instead of black. I use mostly Pat mcGrath Palettes or MAC I have a few Tom Ford and CT palettes.. but I realize so many colors look similar on the lid. I would have to say at this time I am in love with rose gold tones. PMG has the best ones.. if I am going to do any bold color I no longer use it as a shadow and I am now using the bolder purples, green.. etc as a liner on the upper lid and no other eye shadow. Glittery shades are still my loves..
I still love peacock feather colors. Appreciate saturated colors because they actually show up on tan skin and can be muted as needed. Formula is more important as I don’t want to spend hours blending and like layering different textures and colors.
Yes and no. I had my dark brown hair coloured in black for a long time then went to as red as I could get it without bleaching it first, thus I went from neutral to cooler shades to warmer ones. Now I’m back to the cooler tones again this time with cool brown hair.
My skin is more neutral than warm or cold toned so it works, or I’m delusional! 😀
Anyway I’m using a lot of grey and silver right now along with purples and cool pinks and of course all the lovely taupe shades.
