How does your skincare routine change for summer?

I live in Arizona, so summer is actually the time of year where I spend more time inside than outside on a daily basis, not that I’m really outside for THAT long in any season. But summer here is more like everyone else’s harsh winter–stay inside as much as possible and otherwise run in-between car and air conditioned buildings, LOL. It’s pretty dry here year-round, and since there’s a fair amount of air conditioning present, I find I use medium and heavier creams year-round as well.

I’ll use lighter moisturizers both day and night. For daytime, something that also includes sunscreen is a plus. I’m more likely to use a toner type product in summer too – sometimes when I come in from work (many schools here are not air conditioned in the classrooms) just to cut through the grimy feel I have when I get in at the end of the school day. I’ll carry a bottle of mineral water mist and I really love using a scented, cooling body spray (Biotherm Vitaminee or Clarins’s Eau Dynamisante) when I get in and also after a shower to keep that “cooled down” feeling.

I’ll use a lighter weight moisturizer and don’t need to use as many face oils since my skin is less dry in the summer, but otherwise I use the same SPF year round as I’m always outside and it is easier to just use it the same every day!

My second cleanse (after oil or balm to remove makeup) will be a formula for oily or normal to oily skin. I switch to a water-based moisturizer and a sunscreen formulated for oily skin. I am also using a stronger version of tretinoin although I may be able to continue with it next winter if my skin gets used to it.

The climate here in Arizona is killer to the skin during summer. This is one of two times of the year where I dig out my marula and rosehip oils to use at night in order to counteract the extreme dryness and searing heat it may have been exposed to during the daytime. My face and neck appreciate that boost! I also become scrupulous about using my 40 SPF sunscreen moisturizer every single day, even if I may only be walking over to my mailbox or riding in a car. Summer here is far longer than most other places, too. Usually runs from around mid May into mid October!

I live in the coastal USA right by the water. So the temperatures don’t fluctuate much (it might get to the 80s for a few days per year but that’s it). Year-round I wear a spf mineral moisturizer and I may or may not reapply depending if I’ll be outside.

If I’m traveling to hotter & sunnier areas where I plan on being outside–then it’s all about sun protection skin care and preventing damage. Reapply sweat-resistant SPF. Cover skin with clothing, hat, or even parasol–stick to shade when possible. Cleansing balm to get rid of SPF and antioxidants and niacinamide to deal with damage. I use less BHAs/AHAs and retinol bc those make skin more vulnerable to sun–I save it for the acne. I’ll use more sulfur at this point.

I’m also in Arizona (San Tan Valley ^_^) and I usually end up adding a serum as well as a heavy moisturizer and face sprays. Since it’s started to heat up a bit early this year and I wasn’t ready, my skin has been a bit dry for the last few weeks =/

I tend to use actives like chemical exfoliators and retinoids less often in the summer because I spend a lot of time outside in our pool and focus more on reapplying sunscreen often to combat potential sun damage. Otherwise my routine stays fairly consistent year round.

Summers here in the Himalayas are hot and humid. Quite a contrast with the dry, arid, cold winds that blow down from the mountains in winter. I leave out the squalane oil at the end of my skin care routine and stick to a watery essence after cleansing followed by a hyaluronic acid serum. And of course, in the Summer months it is 50spf.
