How do you select what fragrance to wear?

In our closet, we have some small shelves that I’ve put various fragrances on–maybe a dozen or so–and then I swap them out every so often. There’s no real rhyme or reason on how I pick one over the other, though, just that I like the scent.

It really depends! I have a couple of fragrances that make me feel especially sexy, so I’ll usually reach for one of those if I’m going on a date with my spouse 🙂 Otherwise, it might be based on my mood, or what I haven’t worn in a while. I buy a lot of scents from a friend of mine who gives them clever names, so sometimes I just choose based on which name makes me smile or ties into my activities for the day!

Today, because it was so fall and crisp here in The Hudson Valley, all I wanted to smell on me and throughout the house was Badedas ! The shower gel. So clean. So fresh. I also found a bottle of Royall Spyce in the linen closet, I’m thinking of giving that a whirl next to get in the fall feel. If I had those Payne’s cone incense I would have lit those too. I miss my little Payne’s log cabin…gee I loved it when my mother lit those and the house smelled wonderful!!

I definitely go by season, but also the color of the bottle influences me. Perfumes with a blue lid smell blue to me! Warmer, woodsier scents for fall and winter, floral for spring, fruity for summer.

I change the selection like you. I rotate by season. I live in California & I am using TF Venetian Bergamot right now. Still hot summery in Southern California so I have not moved on to any other fragrance right now.

On any normal day in the spring/summer I pick something fresh and fruity like Fresh Life or DKNY Be Delicious, in fall/winter I go more musky and spicy like Elizabeth & James Nirvana Bourbon or NEST Cocoa Woods.

If it’s a special occasion I’ll pick one that compliments my outfit and the makeup I’m wearing as well as the season.

I’ve actually really pared down my collection in the last few years, I now only have 10 bottles (with most of them being 0.25-0.33oz minis) when I used to have something like 40.

I belong to Basenotes who have a sync day each Friday with a theme. Otherwise, I just look at my large collection and one will just speak to me. And that is what I will wear.

This may sound strange, but, I match my fragrance to my makeup/outfit for the day, most of the time. If I have a “warm” toned outfit, I choose a spicier, deeper, warmer scent. “Cooler” outfits/makeup looks get lighter, citrusy or fresh fragrances.
