How do you organize your pre-made eyeshadow palettes?
I keep them in larger plastic bins, since they tend to be an assortment of sizes (width/height/thickness), so my regular chest of drawers doesn’t work well for anything larger than duos/trios/quads. I segment palettes by brand for a few (like Urban Decay) as well as keep permanent palettes in a separate bin to distinguish from limited edition ones. I keep quads and similarly-sized ones arranged by brand, type, and alphabetized (sometimes broken out between limited edition and permanent, if applicable).
“Organize” is a pretty grand description for the mess my palettes are in. The ones I use most often at any time (it changes) are on a shelf under the medicine cabinet in my bathroom. The others are stacked standing upright (think about how record albums or CDs are arranged in stores) in a pull out drawer under my bathroom sink. Others (the really large ones and those I don’t use often) are in a dresser drawer in my younger son’s erstwhile bedroom. If ever my husband gets around to installing the new bathroom vanity we have “waiting”, things might be a bit more “ordered” but I actually think this sort of disorganization (scoffers might call it chaos) is my default setting in most things (you should see my sewing patterns and my sewing room in general….or my cookery books!)
Have you ever had a problem with humidity affecting the makeup you store in the bathroom?
Nope. I have an extractor fan to take out any humidity but most of the time, I use the larger shower in our main bath.
They’re in a drawer of a rolling bin tower, which is not ideal, as I tend to only pick the ones on top. I think I’m going to take someone’s suggestion from an earlier thread about using a vertical file organizer/divider. Of course, I’ll need to sew a cover for it so my palettes aren’t collecting dust on my desktop. And I have just the spot to put it in…
By size and then color story, stacked on shelves. Neutrals in a stack, brights and neons in a stack, other colors in a stack. My UD Vice palettes and other similarly sized square palettes are grouped together. My husband designed and 3D printed some brackets to hold the basic sizes for me, so the stacks aren’t sliding all over the place. Small palettes are in the cubbies in my roll top desk/vanity. Really large Saucebox Mermaid Life and/or odd-shaped palettes go in drawers.
I usually depot duos, trios, and quads into Z-palettes. Any that aren’t go in a desk drawer.
Roughly half of mine take up an entire drawer of my rolling Sterlite storage container. They are standing up on their side in order to easily find what I’m looking for. The other half have literally taken over my sock drawer, lol! These need to be properly organized as I have always done the other storage area, because it looks like a mess, plus storing them in this haphazard manner is just all kinds of wrong.
I have an acrylic unit that stacks them, but my collection of palettes has outgrown it. So I’m hoping to find some good tips here.
Check out r/makeuporganization. I really enjoy seeing how other people organize their collections.
I only have four pre-made eyeshadow palettes, so I don’t need to organize them that much. My vanity has two drawers and they’re in one of them, along with my customized palettes and my one highlighter palette. (The other drawer is for jewelry.)
I organise them very simply – larger palettes in one makeup bag and quad and smaller palettes in another…..
I have a drawer devoted just to eyeshadows. Within the drawer, I have them organized by brand and within the brand, they are organized alphabetically. Since I stand them on their side, I use a P-Touch label maker to facilitate the process. I never purchase those large, outsized palettes so I don’t have to worry about how to store them. Also, I purge my eyeshadows on a regular basis so I typically have no more than a dozen palettes at any given time. The same goes for eyeshadow singles. Everything fits nicely into the drawer with space to spare.
I have a couple Iris rolling drawers from an office supply store. I store my palettes I in the two larger bottom xrawers. They are sorted face up loosely by size. The smaller palettes are stacked on their side in acrylic containers in the front of the drawers.
I file them mostly by size if I have collected a few and by brand all together. Then new ones which don’t follow any order I squeeze them here and there but they are always visible to me and easy to grab. I don’t like huge palettes but if would receive a nice one from a nice friend I’ll tske it! Lol! I store them on my glass Ikea shelves in the bathroom where I get good light.
