How do you figure out what makeup to use each time you apply your makeup?

I keep makeup I’ve photographed but need to test in clear plastic bins, so then I rummage through there to figure out what to test next!

I usually try to inspire myself with an eyeshadow palette then I stick with the tone or brand (so I use what I have) and go from there
It might be weird but I have a document with lists of specific makeup products I own that go together, which I’ve organized into looks by occasion (eg: “retro day date” is Hourglass femme nude #3 on the lips, Stila’s brown liquid liner in a more subdued cateye, Inglot #353 on the lids, blush variable).
I don’t own a ton of products however, which really “helps” this dilemma.
I don’t find this weird at all! I think I should totally do the same actually–if certain products just go or work well together–it totally makes sense documenting this! I might actually steal your idea and change it up!
Oh cool, I hope that it is useful for you! I definitely like it when I have to get out the door quickly.
That’s not weird. You are organized with your makeup 🙂
Glad to know it’s not too weird, ha ha, I find lists and organizing very fun!
The usual way: I pick out cosmetics based on what I’m doing while wearing it. If I’m working (I’m on my feet at work and constantly active), then I’ll choose long-lasting products with pinks or neutrals. If I’m not working and if it’s an social occasion/obligation–I’ll pick out makeup to go with the outfit and the occasion. If the only thing I’m obligated to do is suit myself (like at home or out with friends/errands/fun stuff), then perhaps I’ll forgo makeup–or break out the fun colors and do something fun.
Simple for me. I decide what blush or lipstick (one or the other) I feel like wearing today and base the rest of my makeup on that. I’m not very daring or creative when it comes to makeup, so it is not usually too much of a problem 🙂
This is a daily struggle. I usually try to decide the night before while getting unready to speed things up in the morning. I try to rotate some (blushes, eyeshadows, lipproducts), but do have favorites (mostly in the base department) that stay the same. When I have all the time in the world I open up all the drawers and mix it up, also looking for inspiration online! It really depends on how much time I have.
It’s part of my night time routine. I have the kids shower and make their lunches, then I shower and get ready for bed. Before I go to bed, I decide and layout my makeup next to the bathroom sink. That way I don’t waste my morning trying to figure out what to wear.
Mostly by what outfit I’m wearing. I’m one of those people who like to match their eyeliner to their clothes. I need Stila to come out with a rainbow of stay-all-day liners ASAP!
I usually just grab whatever tickles my fancy that day 🙂 I don’t really think too much about it.
Well it may sound a bit stupid (:P) but each time I buy something I categorize it per month so every month I use what I bought… Then at the end of the month I decide which were my favourite products and I put them in the bin with my other favourites!!
Good way to use up products. Good idea!
If it’s a work day, I tend to have a set group of makeup in my drawer that I use, that I know works well with my skin and will hold through the day.
Non-work days or nights I’m going out I have a little container that holds any new products I want to try out and another full of products that I own but just don’t see much love that I want to use more.
I make my decision based on what my day holds for me and then, what I plan on wearing for the day. I’ll choose a foundation based on the weather usually. If it is very dry out I will pick a lighter liquid foundation that layers well over moisturizer. If it is rainy or damp, I will use my mineral foundation. I don’t do a full eye makeup every day. Again, depends on where I will be going and what I will be doing. I have a very casual life style so full face isn’t appropriate for me every day. All stops pulled out for evenings out! I always try to get my concealer and a foundation on each day as I have deep dark circles (purple, really)and a lot of redness. (:
I decide if I’m going cool toned or warm toned and go from there. For eyes, I mostly use different neutral combinations and I coordinate with my clothing, i.e. grey combos with grey clothing, taupes with black, warmer tans if I’m wearing my tan booties. Then I pick a cheek color and lip color to go with.
Sometimes there’s a specific lip color I want to wear and then I build a look around that color.
What I choose to wear for make up depends on multiple things like where I’m going, who I’m going to see, how long I’ll need the make-up to look presentable, how much coverage I need that day, etc. I work at a law office but we don’t usually deal with clients on a daily basis so I can pretty much wear whatever make-up I want but I still usually stick to neutrals on they eyes and reds, pink, browns, oranges on the lips. Regardless of where I’m going I use waterproof mascara and if I’m wearing foundation I like it to be natural looking but still long wearing, medium-full coverage. On weekends everything is fair game.
Weather/heat, and how oily my skin is that day, and break outs are the bases for whether I wear powder foundation, stick, or BB cream, and concealer. If I have a new item I want to try out, I’ll plan around that. Most days, I go by where I’m going, and what I’m wearing.
I try to follow my instinct. I also use products I want to test for the blog, or new products I just bought, in priority. Otherwise I’m inspired by the season, the weather, what I’m wearing that day, the occasion (day look or date…).
The same way I paint my pictures.. I have a rough idea in advance sometimes, but other days I just dive in, pick something I like, and go along to complement that as I go along.
Occasionally I plan out an entire look in advance to go with a certain outfit, and even buy specific items for that look (very rarely, as I don’t have the cash to do that regularly) or I’ll go for a look I’ve done before and know works well with something, but generally, my brush dips in the eyeshadow palette to wherever I’m drawn, and then I pick liner, cheeks etc from there. 😀
I’m such an _artist_ sometimes. Ooh look at me I’m so spontaneous :p
Since I don’t work outside the house, it’s based on how I feel, how much time I have and what I’m doing. If we’re going out that night and I have all afternoon to get ready, I’ll play around with eye looks, usually using my newest shadows, until I come with something I like. Or, if I have a new lipstick, I’ll start there. If I’m taking my partner to work so I can run errands, I usually don’t have a lot of time, so I’ll go with a tried and true, usually minimal, look.
I always plan my looks out in advance, sometimes for the week but almost always for the next day. Usually it’s just a combination of what I’m going to wear/what’s inspiring me/tutorials I’ve watched/looks I’ve seen lately.
Most of the time my makeup is soft and sheer. I go by how I am feeling. Most of the time, it would be a bronzy colored eye shadow, mascara, a little blush and a plum or soft brownie pink lipstick. That’s it. 🙂
I wing it…whatever strikes my mood, I’ll just go with it. I don’t put a lot of thought in deciding what to use. Indecisiveness will end up making me late for work! Put so far, so good!
It depends… sometimes I’ll watch a tutorial or see someone with an idea I like, and I’ll do my own version of it the next day. If I go in with no clue, I either just rummage arrange my traincase to see what stands out to me, or base it on what I’m wearing (not to be matchy-matchy, just to be complimentary.) Once I based an eyeshadow look on Pacific Rim when I was watching it again, so who knows? 😛
First I plan on what I’m wearing. After that it depends on the weather and light (daylight vs. office lighting vs date night) then it depends on where I’m headed and how long I will be out of the house (4 hours, 10 hours, more?) I wear a different foundation if I’m going to be outside in the daylight than if I’m headed to work or a formal affair. I match my eyeshadow, blush and lippie to my clothing (warm, cool, neutral) Formal or casual – that changes the eye look. And that’s about it!
For me, it all depends on what colours I am wearing – this determines my eye shadow colour.
My foundation, setting powder and blush are always the same.
My lipstick shade is also determined by my colours too.
Usually I look through my eyeshadow palettes and try to come up with an idea of what I want to do, then add products that complement that idea. Sometimes my decision is based on how often I’ve used a product; I might pick something because I haven’t been using it. If I’m too lazy for eyeshadow, I randomly pick a lipstick and match a blush to it.
I usually have a main eye palette that I switch out each month. I create whatever work-appropriate looks I can from that on the fly, but I also rotate single shadows, pigments, and/or liners for pops of color or more dramatic looks. For blush and lips, I swap them out more or less at random, though I do have a few colors that are better suited to certain seasons.
I pre-pack it into bags – one basic bag that has concealer, mascara, eye primer and powder in it then colored bags that has eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, lip gloss and lipstick.
I am almost always running late in the AM so I put on foundation before I leave the house then grab the base bag and one colored bag and put it on while the car is warming up, at stoplight, and in the parking lot at work LOL.
I currenty have 5 color-scheme bags – blue, brown, gray, green and purple. If I want to change it up I change whats in the bag over the weekend.
I choose which bag I use based on what I’m wearing.
That is a really great way to have pre packed but varying colours! definitely learning this.
I go through my stash, grab an eye palette, and work from there. I put all those products I grab into a makeup bag and use that combo until I get bored, the season changes, or I hit pans on my favorites. I have so many palettes that I have to use up at this point, this is what I am doing to use them up. There will be a few I hate to see go because they are no longer made, but that frees up some room for new palettes. I am really going to miss Kat Von D’s Saint palette. I didn’t have really high expectations of it, but it turned out to be great. I can replace my UD Naked palettes, and I need to use up some of the LE palettes from Nars, MAC, and others I don’t use as much just to use them.
I make a “basket of the week”. It is actually a long rectangular tray. That way I can rotate through my collection and keep up with what is seasonal. I leave out lips though. The lip choice I pick last since they sit ok n top of my vanity. Also I usually decide while I am putting on my face which one I’ll use. And of course they are a few goes with everything lip products in my purse in case I run late and forget .
