Hit List: Most Hydrating Lip Balm

What’s the Most Hydrating Lip Balm that you’ve tried?

Share your pick!  And don’t forget to share why 🙂

I still love Jack Black’s Lip Balm for really good hydration. Bite Beauty’s Lip Mask, Hourglass Lip Oil, etc. are all great options, but my lips’ needs are taken care of with Jack Black. I also have a soft spot for Tom Ford’s Lip Balm, even though I don’t know that it’s worth the price (that being said, I’ve purchased two since finishing the first).

Thanks to Anjali for today’s topic!

The Labello in a blue tube was fantastic. I’ve been looking into the Lemon Lavander lip balm by beecology but it’s not available in my country. I need to order it in Amazon. Has anyone tried it yet?

Jenny Avatar

I really like the NYX tinted lip balms… mainly because 1. They’re tinted 2. They actually do what they say they’re going to do and hydrate my lips instead of making them more chapped (the Maybelline Baby Lips made my lips so dry that they cracked!). 3. They’re super affordable. ^_^

xamyx Avatar

The Maybelline Baby Lips was one of the few balms I’ve ever finished! I only stopped using it (didn’t repurchase because I prefer more “natural” ingredients in lip products), but I actually quite liked it.

Amy Avatar

Jack Black lip balm and Malin + Goetz Mojito Lip Balm are my long time favorites, both are amazing for prep before lipstick. C.O. Bigelow – My Favorite Night Balm is becoming my night time balm before bed, it reminds of the Jack Black lipbalm but more thick and hydrating.

beka Avatar

i use la mer lip balm during the day and the bite lip mask at night. i used to have the hourglass one, but i lost it and didn’t feel the need to replace it, but it was nice. i’m going to check out tom ford’s the next time i’m at neimans. i love his lipsticks, so i bet i’d love his balm.

patsyann Avatar

I have very dry lips. In order to wear lipstick comfortably I must use a light layer of balm. Unfortunately most balms dry my lips out. The only balm that works for me is HPA Lanolin from Lansinoh. This is a product for nursing mothers, but it works so well for lips. I go to bed every night with a thick layer on and during the day, I always have a lighter layer on under lipstick.

Jennifer Avatar

YES. The Lansinoh is a fantastic dupe (in texture and effect) IMO for the Bite Beauty agave mask, just with a different smell. Plus you get 4 times the product for 1/3 the price. I have both, but I keep the Bite in my purse and the Lansinoh at home.

Tina Avatar

Me too but the Lansinoh didn’t work for me! I have yet to find something that works. I’ve tried Sugar, Jack Black Carmex,. Chapstick, none fix my lips! Ughhhh

Natasha Avatar

No. Do not try Carmex. Trust me. I’ve been using carmex since I was a kid (I’m 28 now) and its become a serious addiction. I’ve tried many times to stop using it, using a different product each time, and NOTHING works, not even close. I’ve never made it past half a day without going back to it. I can apply the other product every two minutes and it doesn’t matter, lips are still dry. And I have a friend who is EXACTLY the same way. Walk into each of our homes… You’ll see Carmex everywhere. So does it work? Yes it does! Do I recommend it to someone? No!!! Not unless they want a no joke Carmex addiction. I can’t even wear lipstick, liner, or gloss without my lips freaking out after five minutes because, god forbid, it isn’t Carmex. So seriously… To those considering Carmex, DON’T!

Katie Avatar

Fresh Sugar Advanced Lip Therapy– best stuff ever. My husband thinks I’m nuts for buying $25 lip balm, but nothing I’ve found comes close to being as good.

Jennifer Avatar

Jack Black, bought on your reccomendation, and now a staple. I fill everyone’s stockings with a couple at Christmas too.

Boots No7 has a protect and repair lip balm that is also very good. It sinks into your lips almost immediately, it doesn’t have any petroleum or wax to linger on the surface so it doesn’t actually “protect” your lips at all. But if you immediately follow up with a lipstick, you have a nice layer of moisture underneath and the surface of your lips still takes the lipstick well. It’s sorta a weird product and not very good on it’s own but excellent for a base layer.

FiaSpice Avatar

I used to swear by Jack Black, but I once dicided to check the ingredients and saw “Petrolatum”. I didn’t like that. Since that I switched to L’Occitane SHEA ZESTY LIME LIP BALM which I really find hydrating.

Heliyas Avatar

Why, oh why did Jack Black change the formula?! Some people have been saying that petrolatum was always in it, but I worked at Sephora for 6 years and never saw it in the ingredients until recently. I’m still hoarding a tube of the old formula! I’ll have to try out that L’Occitane one. Thanks for the recommendation!

Gillian Avatar

Only going by what I’ve actually tried it has to be the Rodial Glam Balm Lip in the little tub. Second to that would be the MAC lip balm in the tub. I always go back to those two. I’d like to try the Jack Black lip balm at some point though since I’ve heard good things. 🙂

Aline Avatar

The Fresh lip balms are HG for me. I don’t even bother checking out other balms because I love them so much. If you are being frugal with your money, you can use it only as a nighttime treatment and one big tube (not the minis) will last me nine months. Right now Sephora is doing double points on them.

Rachel R. Avatar

I don’t buy real expensive balms. My favorites are Burt’s Bees, eos and Nyx Butter lip balm. I don’t like Chapstick or anything else super waxy, or anything super gooey.

Katherine T. Avatar

For daytime, I like Carmex Broad Spectrum SPF15 lip balm. As my lips are very sensitive to sun, I’m never without it – it’s hydrating and adds a nice shine. At night, I alternate between Yes to Coconut and Fresh Sugar Lip, both are nice, I want to try some others but it’s taking me forever to finish the tubes.

Connie Avatar

I like Caudalie, Avene Cold Cream Lip Balm, and Neutrogena lip moisturizer (drugstore.com for the Avene and Neutrogena). I can’t stand the Black Jack stuff, to me I might as well slap a glob of vaseline on my lips and call it a day. Each to his own though as always!

Leah Avatar

I’ve tried so many different kinds of lip balms and during the summer time, it’s much harder for me to tell which one really works. This winter has been so dry and cold, the only one really has been working for me is the Fresh sugar lip treatment. I love it!!! I’ve tried the Agave lip mask by bite beauty, jack black intense therapy lip balm, vaseline, EOS lip balms, Maybelline baby lips, Clinique, Tarte, Rosebud lip balm, tokyo milk lip balm…They were all nice but nothing worked like the fresh sugar lip treatment for me this time around. I felt they were all just sitting on top of my lips instead of moisturizing them. So the winner for me is the Sugar lip treatment by Fresh.

xamyx Avatar

Products that are petroleum-byproduct-based are not actually going to do anything to “moisturize”, so they’re really a waste of money-particularly expensive ones. Even if they include “good” ingredients, the lips won’t benefit, as they will be suspended in the petrolatum. That said, I apply oils to my lips at night, and during the day sometimes, and will layer with a balm to “lock-in” the oils, and to protect my lips from the elements. I also prefer beeswax based products.

jilly Avatar

Malin + Goetz lip moisturizer in original or mojito (yummy) and Dr. Lipp original nipple balm for lips are both great for moisturizing, but I find them less useful under lipstick because they’re goopy and make the lipstick slippy. For under lipstick I love Mac Prep+Prime is awesome!

dragonflylover Avatar

I’ve tried bite beauty agave lip mask, but my absolute favorite new find is Tokyomilk Dark. Believe I came across it on beauty.com. Amazing and affordable stuff.

Sylirael Avatar

Most decent lip balms work about as well as each other for me (I don’t have access to Jack Black or Bite here, readily, so I haven’t tried them yet). I like the Nivea/Labello ones, the Badger one in Vanilla Madagascar and the Burts Bees.

I actually find that Guerlain Rouge Automatique and Chanel Rouge Coco lipsticks do a really lovely job on my lips, actually! (damn them and their expense, hah!)

Lotus Avatar

Tata Harper’s, Jo Malone, I detest Jack Black’s dehydrating balms, Caudelie, CdP, Dior, Sara Happ, Hourglass, MJB, KGD, Shiseido, Fresh isn’t bad in the white tube over the serum,Amore Pacific, Chanel’s newer one is lovely, Clarins, Origins, Pure extra virgin Coconut Oil.. I could write a book! 😀

Jenn Avatar

I have to say there’s nothing like good ole fashion Vaseline for winter overnight protection. It lasts all night and heals dry cracked lips. I’ve tried Jack Black overnight and although it’s good, Vaseline is still much better. Benetint and Dior Glow are also great but not for night time. I’ve even put regular Vaseline into a travel size jar for my trips I like it so much. (The tube kind isn’t as thick to me). I just purchased a Rosebud Salve in a tube that I may try too.

Jocelyn Avatar

I love the Jack Black lip balm line, and the Say Yes drugstore brand has the Say yes to coconut with coconut oil, and its fantastic! And smells awesome too!

LacquerAndLeather Avatar

I love Episilk lip balm by Hyalogic. It has really great ingredients (one of which is hyaluronic acid). I use it for my night treatment and I wear Burt’s Bees tinted balm during the day. Since using the Episilk, I very rarely get chapped laps, my lips are so much better all around.

Nicole Avatar

I really like Nuxe Reve de Miel. I cant use it under lip product because it is thick . So,it’s mostly a night balm for me. But, it pulls me through terribly, dry, cold Ohio winters enough that I canstill pull off the matte and bold lips. I was using Amorepacific which was really nice. But it is $35 for the same size as the Jack Black tube. I felt like I had to be obsessive about where it was. I’m the kind of person who needs a balm to chuck in every bag, pocket, car,by the bed,in the bathroom, etc…my daughter does too..double whammy! So for now, I am doing the Nuxe at night and Jack Black for day. I am letting my daughter finish off the AmorePacific because her lips get ridiculous, peely gross chapped in winter. She is 9. For some reason, all of her friends have that going on too this time of year and they really don’t seem to care until they bleed..seriously. I’m on her to put on her balm like brushing her teeth! lol..I’m happy to see this Hit list question so I can look for better less expensive ideas for her. But overall,I think if you can hydrate enough on the inside, the Jack Black is pretty darn good for the price. Thanks to Christine,I found that one last about a year ago..thanks Christine!:)

Quinctia Avatar

If Jack Black works well for you guys, Vaseline Lip Therapy might be a good cheapie alternative, at least for the at home/night time application. I get on very well with petroleum based balms in general and, while Jack Black’s a fave for keeping in a purse because of the packaging, I’ve really liked the Lip Therapy myself. I live in NW Indiana, so I’ve been dealing with the harsh winters, too. 🙂

Lisa Tomko Avatar

My favorite is Dior Creme de Rose. I have used lip balm at night pretty much my entire life. As my lips have always been super dry, I would bite and pick at them until they bled. This balm has gotten me to stop biting my lips. I love how soft it feels and the smell is beautiful. It is a must-have repurchase.

Laura Avatar

i like strawberry carmex for the day as it has spf and it keeps the lips moistruized for a long time. other favorites of mine include eos’ sweet mint, hurraw lip balm (organic, raw, and vegan), fresh original and rose lip treatments, burt’s bees pink grapefruit ,and the jack black black tea & blackberry lip balm. i’d definitely like to try out the tom ford, hourglass, and lush lip treatments.

Mariella Avatar

My votes would also be Jack Black (and it has SPF) and BITE lip mask. I have Nuxe Reve de miel and like it okay except for the gunky, waxy nature of it so I only use it at night. Clarins makes a wonderful balm as well in a blue squeezy tube.

A. Mar Avatar

I should probably expand on that. I will often wear Jack Black’s if I have no desire to wear lip color on a day. It’s glossy and hydrating. I like Nuxe Reve de Miel under lipstick/gloss since it sinks in to the skin rather than being glossy. Hydrating and matte. Homeoplasmine is great for nothing but hydration. Wear it at home, while sleeping. It’s the most hydrating for me.

stashy Avatar

I’ve tried SO many that have come highly recommended – Jack Black, Aquaphor, Nuxe, Fresh – but in the end, the one that worked best for me are the C.O. Bigelow ones from BBW! But they HAVE to be the ones that are the “Supreme 2X” formula. They last a long time on my lips and are still on my lips in the morning when I wake up. I especially love the Vanillamint one.

Chris Avatar

Dermstore’s Lip Quench is my favorite, and I find it to be more hydrating and better-wearing than the myriad Jack Blacks that I own (but Dermstore’s has no SPF). I also love Aquaphor, but sometimes I feel that it’s a bit too slippery and greasy.

Amelia Bee Avatar

I was OBSESSED with Dermstore Lip Quench, but they changed the formula! Now it feels and wears like any dime store tinted balm full of fillers and sticky glycerin. I hate it. Why did they change it? Why?

Jennifer Avatar

I have never found a lip balm that really does much for my dry lips. My lips crack and bleed in the winter and are even chapped in the summer. If I HAD to choose I think Jack Black and Clinique are the best of the ones I have tried (and there have been MANY) but I eventually gave up and just started lubing my lips every night with Buxom lip gloss which is surprisingly good at keeping my pitiful lips in better shape than anything else.

Julia Avatar

I watched video of of beauty blogger who is a doctor as well, she recommended Blistex medicated OINTMENT for chapped lips. it has super good healing restoring function. Hopefully it helps

Sheena Avatar

I swear by The Body Shop’s Aloe Vera Lip Care! (9usd for 0.5 oz) (about 12usd in Singapore)
It really soothed my lips went I went for my first winter holiday (it was 0 to -20C compared to the 30C I usually get). In Singapore, it’s so difficult to get hold of it because it sells out in stores so soooo fast. I happened to chance upon it when they just restocked and I bought FOUR backups. (:
I see a few hear mentioned Malin + Goetz, got to try that one out coz I love their body wash and natural deodorant so far.

Sephora brand lip balm! Comes in a little metal tin. I have one in my purse and one in my vanity. It feels like heaven in the lips. I will order a Jack black now cause I need to know the goodness!!

Heather Avatar

While I love the plush texture of Malin & Goetz Mojito Balm, I’ve found that Bag Balm does the most amazing things for my lips (which usually crack and bleed year-round). It’s just petroleum jelly and lanolin (plus a tiny bit of the antiseptic 8-hydroxy quinoline sulfate, which makes the taste a bit medicinal), but goodness gracious that stuff is awesome!

At night I add a layer of Vaseline Lip Therapy over the Bag Balm to seal it in and my lips are set for the next twelve hours–and perfectly primed for lipstick the next morning. Oh, and it’s $10 for an eight-ounce tin. (I depot into a purse-sized tub.)

I like a couple of the Nivea balms (Kiss of Cherry and Kiss of… Moisture? Hydration? Whatever’s in the light blue tube) when I want a stick balm. I’ve tried Fresh Sugar, Korres lip butter, L’Occitane, Jack Black (liked) and every drugstore balm in existence; Bag Balm is the reason I can wear lipstick without gross dry patches now. 🙂

morgane Avatar

i feel like i’ve tried every lip balm under the sun. lush honey trap is my number one, but it melts easily and is in a pot so it stays on my nightstand. its soothing and all natural. for my purse i like blistex ultra rich hydration spf 15, hurraw almond, or soothing touch vanilla chai.

Quinctia Avatar

L’Occitane Rose Petals lip balm — I grabbed it because I’ve been on a bit of a rose kick. It’s actually not that rose-y, but it’s stupidly hydrating.

And here’s the thing, I got it from ACW at a decently discounted price, but I don’t think I’d ever pay full price for it. It’s mostly vegetable and castor oil. I think I’d happily buy a cheaper dupe of the formula, though. It’s the best balm I’ve tried that isn’t mostly petroleum based.

kristen @ glambunctious Avatar

My top 2 picks are Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask and Glossier Balm Dotcom. The Agave Lip Mask is a healer – truly a miracle product for chapped, peeling lips. The Balm Dotcom is a LOVELY, thick, unscented/taste-free salve that keeps lips smooth and ultra hydrated.

Julia Avatar

I tried so many lip balms from many different luxury and drug store brands, but I found 3 favorite balms: my favorite the most hydrating is Bliss Fabulips softening lip balm, Dior Creme De Rose and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream Nourishing Lip Balm.
The lip balms i tried: Kiehls, Fresh tinted lip treatment, Loccitane lip balm in tube, carmex, EOS (the worst- doesn’t do anything), Blistex Medicated ointment (the best for healing for cracked extra dry lips).

Bliss lip balm you can buy in Sephora, or try to find in Marshalls or TJMax with cheapest price.
