Guerlain Spring 2011: Rouge Sensuel

Just in time for spring, Guerlain is giving us four new and limited edition shades of their luxurious Rouge G
lipstick in a black lacquered case (as opposed to the metal casing). (To see the other shaes, see details here.) Rouge Sensuel is a semi-opaque coral-red with subtle gold micro-shimmer. Surprisingly, I think this shade would work on both cooler and warmer skin tones, despite the orange base, because the red definitely dominates. It’s almost a mix of pink, red, and orange.

Long-time readers will know that Guerlain’s Rouge G formula is one of my absolute favorite lipsticks, so I always look forward to new and seasonal shade releases. Rouge G colors have certain nuances to them just seem to make them more flattering when worn. The formula is moisturizing, long-wearing (four to six hours), and comfortable to wear–never heavy but generally opaque in color. I’m still crossing my fingers for refills, because as elegant as the case is, so much of the price must be attributed to it, and it would be nice to be able to reuse it.

The one thing I noticed about these is though the weight feels the same (we actually whipped out the scale, it was a 0.06 oz. lighter), the magnet enclosure seemed slightly weaker.  If you throw ’em around, the black lacquered case’s lid will fall off easier than the metal one (which also slips off if you put it through the tests we did, haha).  I carried one in my purse all day, though, and it was fine.

  • Product: 28/30
  • Value: 7/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: It seems a little sheerer than the average Rouge G, but the formula itself is every bit as true to the range otherwise.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! I know the quality is totally different. But, on screen, the color looks like it could be close to Viva Glam Cindy. Do you think it’s similar enough to save the $30 difference?

*Sigh*. Spring from CHANEL and Guerlain are doing to burn a hole in my bank account. I love the black cases they have for this collex, I’m picking up a couple of Rouge G’s and the divine blusher! This color is really pretty on you Christine!

This color looks amazing on you!! Too bad my lip color changes all the color of any lipstick i try (too pigmented) or i’d love to buy this shade, GRRRRRR.

That’s exactly the kind of red I like to wear – not too bright for my fair skin. I also love the package ♥__♥ but I bet it’s too expensive for my budget.

This color is gorgeous on you! I have similar coloring but I’m more of an NC35. Its too bad its almost $50 bucks! Maybe I can use my $25 Sephora gift card and get half off. Oh my, but so worth it!!

Great review as always Christine! I love the black casing! I just wish the red was blue based red though, not coral based. Is there any blue based reds in this Spring collection?

Really loving this colour. And really disliking the tube.
I simply like a lipstick to look like a good ol’ fashioned lipstick in a regular tube… Old school that way!

Pricey. But heck, why not?
Great colour.

Stunning colour! So far, I’ve only bought one Rouge G because of the price ($50 here in Canada), but if this colour looks half as good on me as it does on you, Christine, I’ll have to take the plunge for #2.

So I bought this today, and I have to say, it’s even prettier in person than swatched! I have very pigmented lips, so it looks a little deeper red, but it’s just perfect for any occasion! And it’s not too bright for work. Definitely my new favourite!

My lips are cool toned and moderately pigmented…Rouge Sensuel melts into them to create my perfect daytime red. Just picked it up today, and after wearing it around the house for a while I’ve decided that this is officially HG status in both color and formula…oh happy day!
