Guerlain Noir Volcanique (01) Khol Me Kajal Eyeliner Review, Photos, Swatches
Guerlain Noir Volcanique (01) Khol Me Kajal Eyeliner
Guerlain Noir Volcanique (01) Khol Me Kajal Eyeliner ($37.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a mostly matte, medium-dark black with neutral undertones. It’s slightly darker than the average black eyeshadow but not as intense as the blackest black eyeliners–see comparison swatches. It doesn’t seem creamy initially, but the pencil tip glides across skin evenly and smoothly without dragging or skipping. One single pass delivered quite a bit of product, and of course, going back and forth yielded fully opaque color. It applied really well to the waterline, as well as the lash line. When worn on the water line, it lasts between six and eight hours for me (six being if my eyes are somewhat watery). On the lower lash line, it lasted eight to ten hours well and had some slight smudging after ten hours of wear.
If it’s any comfort to your wallet, you’re getting almost twice as much as your standard pencil eyeliner (0.04 oz., and this is 0.07 oz.). Guerlain says it can be used as an eyeshadow, too, if desired. It comes as a long, tapered tip with a widge base, and really, my big concern with this product is how easy it will be to used as you wear down the tip, because it’s not a pencil you can use in your normal pencil sharpener.

I don’t know if this is sort of what you meant about the tip wearing down over time, but typically with more traditionally shaped kohl like this, I was taught to hold it horizontally and slide it across the waterline–so instead of using it like a traditional eyeliner pencil, with the tip hitting your skin first, the entire length of the kohl should apply to your waterline all at once. That’s why the shape is so long and tapered, it becomes easier to apply without poking yourself half to death, haha. At least, that’s how I was taught to do it! 😛
Thank you for sharing 🙂
I was also taught to slant the product rather than using it like an eye pencil. It’s very easy once you get the hang of it. If old habits die hard, you can always use a slant brush to pick up product and apply it.
I’ve seen women apply it by lying it horizontally on the waterline, shutting the eye over it and running it outwards. Apparently it can sting if you touch your eyeball but practice makes perfect and you should be able to avoid doing so after a while.
I think that’s for the loose kohl that you place it between the lashline and close eyes and glide. I have both of these products and this kohl pencil is great but it does smudge quite a bit for me after few (4-5)hours. The loose kohl that you glide between your lids, I haven’t quite mastered that and I make a mess
🙁
The messy, smudgey look is supposed to happen. Kohl is supposed to keep your eyes cool and shield them from bright sunlight, so the smudges were intended, to prevent glare. So this kind of waxy formulation technically wasn’t designed to achieve a clean line.
Actually you do that with both the loose and these stick types. Works wonderfully!
I really like this!!
Something I have wondering with things like this is what happens after you use it a few times, and it gets dull? I mean, from what it looks like even if you ca sharpen it there’d be loads of waste.
you don’t use the tip you use it on its side so it doesn’t wear down
6 hours on the waterline? Where do I sign up? Most pencils and gels disappear from my waterline within an hour (Inglot’s gel stays put but, it hurts my eyes). Is this above average wear time for you, Christine?
I would say the average is four to six hours, depending on the shade (shimmery shades don’t usually last as long as the matte ones!). Longest for me is 8-10 hours but that’s a good day (no watery eyes).
I recently picked up Essence Longwearing Eyeliner, and have been having amazing results. Nothing, and I do mean *nothing*, stays on my waterline more than a 3-4 hours, but this one gives me a solid 6-7. It’s also dirt-cheap, around $3 USD, and there are a few colors to choose from.
Thanks to you both for the info! XAMYX, I’ll try the Essense. I heard they’re coming to Walgreens so, the selection could be better than the paltry one at my Ulta.
Is it a limited product?
This is permanent! You can see if it is permanent, limited edition, or discontinued by looking for either P, LE, or DC over the product’s photo in the Glossover!
I wonder how this compares to traditional kajal. I’m sure there are many different varieties but maybe this is somehow different, more Western if you will.
I love the lipstick you have in the last picture, please share what is it, thank you!
WHAT MAKEUP ARE YOU WEARING?
On eyes: Guerlain Khol Me Kajal. On lips: Flower Beauty Petal Kiss.
But heads up, Petal Kiss destroyed my lips and would not recommend it.
Good review! I think Guerlain Noir Volcanique quality and text is more efficient than any other eyeliner brands and the price is right as well.
Wow that is really rich! It still amazes me how far makeup has come in terms of long-wearing formulas. In my mind, kajal liner was always synonymous with rich color but a very short wear time. Now they last for 6-8 hours? Who woulda thought?! 😛
You’re so lucky….I wish anything lasted on me more than an hour.. 🙁
I feel like the single swipe doesn’t yield much pigmentation in comparison to other black kohl or pencil liners and the rating should be docked a little more for that. However, I do like how you can use a unique technique with this!
I have the other kajal product from Guerlain. At first glance, they appear to be exactly the same. This one is more expensive, though. I think that it is also important for first-time users to know that kajal will smudge. It is designed to smudge. Do not think that this type of product will perform like a traditional eye pencil.
I have this and LOVE it. I apply the loose powder (the Guerlain loose powder or one of my pigments depening on my color) in the morning & bring the Khol Me Kajal with me for touchups during the day when I’m wearing black or dark colors. My eyes POP when I use these!!
WOW, that first picture is gorgeous! It looks like a bullet.
I’m loving the product’s design. If it lasts for 8-10 hours on the lower lash line and if there’s a bit of smudging, I wouldn’t be bothered much by it. 🙂
I wonder how this compares to the other Kohl Kajal they had for a long time. the kind in the twist up tube. Does anyone know?
Oh, and from what i’ve seen its not (yet?) available at Sephora. I saw that you posted a link saying it is.
