Guerlain Mirage (06) Terracotta Khol Review, Photos, Swatches

Guerlain Mirage Khol

Guerlain Mirage (06) Terracotta Khol ($35.00 for 0.03 oz.) is a loose eyeliner or khol.  It’s from this year’s Terracotta Collection. Mirage is a smoldering, smoked out gray-toned brown. It’s a nice, smoky shade, but since it’s not black but brown, it can be worn in the day time without overdoing it.

Guerlain’s Loose Khols do take some practice, because they are a bit different from your average eyeliner. I find these work the best as a waterline product–it really holds on tight for the ride. I get about six to eight hours of waterline wear with these. The included applicator is like a stick, and again, practice makes perfect. At first, you’ll be like, “Huh?” but just keep at it.

These can also be used as an eyeshadow, but since you don’t get much product in it (plenty for an eyeliner, but not a lot to use as an eyeshadow). I do want to point out that this is an eyeliner first, and many pencil eyeliners give youa bout 0.04 oz. in product–so don’t let the size totally scare you. A little goes a long way, and I love how long-wearing the product is.

Recommendation: Though it takes some trial and error to get the application down, I find the long-wearing power to be well worth a little experimentation! The matte dark brown is great for everyday or evening, which is nice!

The packaging reminds me of the L’Oreal (I think) liquid eyeliner…that same sort of weird shape. I’m not crazy about the color and it looks like it gets cakey, not so much a smooth swatch.

Hi – I think these look much better when they are applied on the waterline than in a swatch, although a swatch is really helpful to see the colour.

The texture is brilliant for the waterline, I have a couple of these in different colours and I love them. I’m very tempted by Mirage, but I think I actually prefer the regular brown, with the shimmer in it.

It adheres really, really quickly – it’s like, as soon as it hits the waterline, it turns to a cream/liquid.

From other things I’ve read far and wide (I’ve totally been lusting after the Guerlain eye khols), they’re fine for contact-wearers. No worse than using a UD 24/7 pencil. If you get any bits in your eye, they’ll wash out with a couple blinks.

If you wouldn’t mind, can you put a picture of the applicator up too? I’ve always been curious about how it actually works but always forget to check it out when I’m at Sephora 🙁

I have a question, how did you make this last on your waterline for 6 to 8 hours? I’ve heard how this can last on people the whole day, and yet it doesn’t even last 4 hours on me and my eyes are dry to begin with. Did you put any extra product on top of it to make it last, or was it used “neat”?

Hey Sylvie,

I just applied it to the lower water line – I applied one layer, and then I tapped a little more onto it, I think, to make it a little darker/perfectly even.

thanks so much christine! i have been bugging you for this swatch for weeks, lol! hmmm…i was hoping for a richer, warmer chocolately brown, but this is beautiful too. i think it will suit me much better than oriental metal, which is too taupey for me. now i can order this!

The packaging is intresting, but it’s a little over my price limit, (35$ for an eyeliner?). Also, I don’t have much practice with eyeliner, so I don’t know if I could use it properly. I’d love to see it used in a look, or some waterline swatch pics! Thanks for the review, Christine!

Nothing stays more on my waterline, even MUFE aquaeyes or UD pencils.
I wish they had more colors. I have these in black, brown, blue and a beautifull grey with gold shimmer (limited edition, my favorite).Unfortunately, it seems that I’ve lost the black one 🙁

I really like the idea of this. I’d love to see a photo of it applied on the waterline. I want to buy one (in black) but not without really seeing how it looks.

Ah, I’ve always wanted to try this out, and see how effective it is. Guerlain always has such gorgeous packaging, I just haven’t been able to bite and bullet and buy any of their products. This really has my interest piqued though.

I love khol! I’ve been using it since I went to Morocco 2 years ago. I’ve balked at the idea given the price tag of Guerlain’s, but would it be possible to show the applicator?

I have it in Oriental Metal#04(shimmery, gray/silver), I got used to the water line lining but its still a bit difficult to apply in the upper and lower lash line (that’s what I wanted to use it for)I have to keep dipping the stick again & again &again until I see a complete straight & opaque line. I like the product through, YOUR REVIEW IS GREAT…♥

Have you tried the Guerlain KHÔL KAJAL (intense Indian Kohl)?

I just bought one of these but in black about a week ago, I must admit i’m finding the application abit tricky but i’m getting better at it.

The colour payoff is amazing on the waterline and the staying power is really good, plus as a bonus you tightline aswell while appling which i’ve never been able to do with a pencil or gel and it makes my upper lashes look so much thicker. So to me its well worth the effort of getting the application right.

well i know this is a traditional eyeliner where ure supposed to put the stick horizontally on your lower waterline. close your eyes. and pull it away. and it gets both upper and lower lined.

This look terribly messy to use. I have an unsteady hand, and I can imagine easily giving myself a black eye with this. Also, I use contacts, and the powder scares the heck out of me.

Are these similar to the HIP kohls? I bought three of those and I’ve decided that I just don’t like liner on my waterline. It makes my eyes look smaller and a bit evil. I guess it just doesn’t suit me. I will use them as eyeshadows though – thanks for the tip!

They’re pretty similar to the HIP kohls, actually. Different applicator though. The Guerlain is more of a stick where the HIP has a tip.
Btw, I recommend white eyeliner on your waterline. It’ll help brighten things up.

Don’t be afraid to try these because of the whole loose powder on your waterline and weird/scary application process. I’m a total spazz with liquid liner, but this product is super easy and looks gorgeous on. There is a great how-to video on youtube where a girl shows you how to apply it in about 30 seconds. I watched the video twice and had no problem after a few minutes of practice. These loose kohls are great because as someone mentioned, the application gets both the top and bottom tightline done simultaneously. The other awesome-ness factor is that Guerlain makes beautiful colors that are wearable for the office and in daylight. The Oriental Metal shade works really well for me, bacause I have light brown eyes and am of an age where black or chocolate liner worn on the lid looks way too harsh. Just wanted to add my two cents (and two thumbs up!) to the discussion.

I definitely didn’t feel up to trying out a new type of product at this price, but luckily HIP is on sale at Rite Aid 40% off, so I picked up one of those in a brown. I used the method where I closed my eye over the stick and slid it through my lids, and it worked brilliantly for me – it gave me a bit of color along my upper lash line too, a tightlined sort of look, which is awesome. It was a little messy around the corners and not fully even color, so I was able to touch it up too. I’ll have to check out the Guerlain offerings, now!

just bought it after reading your post. gorgeous matte brown with some burnt gold shimmer mixed in. love the color on my waterline (lasts for at least +6 hours on me) and love how it looks as an eyeliner on my top eyelid. gives my eyes a soft mysterious look. i have successfully used it by gently pulling the stick across my top and lower lids once or twice with my eyes open and being very careful, going over some spots again if necessary. it is less messy and there’s less to clean up this way.

i tried putting it on the “eastern” way…some of it gets on my eyeball and when i pulled out, the stick also would rub against my top lashes, creating a fallout and giving me raccoon eyes. i think i need to practice more and maybe try to not close my eyes too tightly down on the stick. the eastern method looks quick and clean when i see other people do it on youtube. i really want to figure this method out hehe

I have three kohls from Guerlain. I just bought another one, Mirage. I turned the tube upside down to see how much stuff is there. Turned upside down there was no powder to see! Could you please try and see how much stuff is there in yours because the other three I have are way more full than Mirage. I wonder if mine is somehow faulty or has Guerlain done this purposefully with their new kohls. Thank you!

It is impossible to see it from the photo. If the cap is facing the floor and you tap the tube with your finger a bit, all the powder goes down to the cap part of the tube and in mine there are no powder to see in Mirage. However, the other three are having powder up to about half way of the tube.

Is anyone else having problems with this particular shade (mirage)? I own several others and I’ve had a heck of a time applying this one. It seems more finely milled, and it clumps on the stick which causes unbelievable fallout. I’ve tried tapping it before applying, but the clumps don’t fall off the stick (persistent little buggers!). Also, the color looks *really* patchy on the first swipe. I’m really disappointed. Maybe I got a bad batch?
