Guerlain Les Gris Eyeshadow Palette

Guerlain Les Gris Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.25 oz.) consists of four eyeshadows that center around a cool-toned, gray theme.  Guerlain’s eyeshadow formula doesn’t always hit all the bells and whistles for me, even though their color selections are rarely off.  The textures of these shades are soft, smooth, and decadent, but the payoff could be a little more intense.  Without a primer, these wear for around eight hours with just slight creasing, and with a primer, there’s no creasing even after twelve hours.

The first shade, on the very left of the palette, is a brown-based gray with a satin-matte finish; it’s not quite matte, but the satin sheen is very subtle. It shares the qualities of most mattes in that it tends to perform better applied than it does swatched. When swatched, there’s some sheerness and dryness, but once applied, it goes on soft and smooth, and that dryness transforms to blendability on the eye. It looks a bit like MAC Scene but without the bluish tone. Chanel Gris Exquis is a couple of steps lighter with less brown in it.

The top shade is a pale gray-taupe; it’s on the edge of taupe, but both the silvery-gray sheen and lightness of it make it appear grayer overall. It has more of a soft, frosted finish, because it has both noticeable shimmer and sheen. The texture is soft and light, and the pigmentation is good. MAC Hold That Pose has a slightly rosy tint in comparison. Guerlain Les Ombres de Nuit has a shade very similar to this, perhaps slightly warmer.

The bottom shade is a dark navy blue with cool undertones and a frosted finish. There’s a subdued quality about the color that makes it less like your average navy blue (which is gorgeous still!). The color reminded me a bit of MAC Prussian, but the finishes are very different.

The last shade, which is on the right side of the palette, is a silver with hints of brown wrapped in a metallic finish that’s just shy of being foil-like. It has a larger shimmer compared to the other two shimmery shades in the palette, though it is not chunky or prone to fall out. The color payoff is good. It’s lighter than theBalm Muppetational. It’s similar to Bobbi Brown Silver when it’s used dry.

Oh this is lovely! I’m cool and fair, so these would be perfect for me. But I can’t justify $59 for four eyeshadows, even ones I know I’d get a lot of use out of. But at least it’s not limited edition–if I win the lottery, I’m heading to Nordstrom!

I know this is just a picky personal thing, but I wish fewer palettes contained pale silver shades! So many otherwise beautiful palettes contain a silver. I wish instead they just had an additional wearable medium-tinted lid shade or a deep dark liner.

I had orginally shied away from this because EOTD’s I had seen on the blogs were all so intense and smoky with little blending–definitely not a look for a woman cruising into her late sixties. But, when Guerlain’s national makeup artist, Marcus Monzon, used this quad on me, I couldn’t believe how stunning it was and perfectly age appropriate it could be. The complex light taupe was used as a base, the darker gray was used as a contour color, and the teal tinged navy was smoked around my lashes and up into the > and blended into the contour color. He said to save the light icy blue for evening sparkle and to use it judiciously! By the way, my eyes are a deep, warm mossy green and the blue in this really made them pop.

All the colors in this gorgeous quad have a bit of blue to them so they re-enforce the overall color scheme of smoky blue grays and are designed to be blended one slightly into the other without any harsh or strong color demarcation lines. Guerlain creates some wonderfully complex colors by using a variety of opalescent pigments. And, as you opted, they wear extremely well.

I wore this palette almost exclusively for 2+ months. It was so on trend for the winter makeup. The silver is really beautiful in the center of the eye to create a “wet” look. The taupe is a really beautiful color and versatile. This palette works really well for my very fair cool toned skin.

I have this and i really like it (i’ve got blonde hair and blue eyes and very pale). I like to wear the taupe grey all over the lids (it pulls quite grey on me), the dark grey in the crease and the blue dusted all over using a big fluffy brush).

These shades are actually exceptionally close to my 15 pan Designer Brands ‘Classic Eye’ palette that I paid $15 for! The more matte shade is simply a satin in my palette

It’s beautiful. Especially the blue. But I just can’t spend $60 on a quad! I can buy 4 Mac eye shadows for $15 each. But not $60 on a quad! Ha ha! Makes perfect sense in my head 😉

You say it would work well on fair tones? Hey, that’s me! 😛

I absolutely LOVEEE the container! And I love the dark blue color! It looks like it has so much depth but it’s also shimmer so it makes it playful simultaneously!

Eileen, you just sold this to me 🙂 I love the colours, not sure about the price tag though…With your description it is just what I have been looking for-I have brown eyes and with grey and blue they use to be more intense. Thank you for sharing!
