Weekend plans: Working on in level my family’s back yard. We have a mount to dig up and sift it all through a large metal wire sieve we made to get all the rocks gravel out of it along with the plant layer. lol
Do you have any favourite quotes?: None I can think of that are cleaver. But still, one of my favourites is “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.”
That quote is another favorite of mine, too, even though I didn’t include it! Hate and anger ARE bad for ones health in every way possible.
As a kid, I hated feeling angry at people, to the point my mom had to sit me down and say it was ok to feel that way.
To this day I’m the type of person to berate myself, over holding a grudge over what someone did to me. Not that I forget, but rather not spend my time and energy dwelling on those things. That said I have a tonne of self-loathing instead.
I should have listed the Jawbreaker Palette as something I resisted in June. I wanted this palette so badly, it was an act of sheer will power to resist. Have you used it very much? Do you love it?
Me too Tammy! I went into the Morpe store and made it all the way to the register with palette but chickened out before I paid, lol. The Jawbreaker palette looks so pretty but besides owning way too many eye shadows. All of the hate controversy turned me off.
It’s a lovely palette formula-wise, and these are the shades I do bust out for a lot of different cosplays looks. Not that I don’t were bright colours daily but realistically not an everyday thing for me either even though I also use a lot of orange and pinks in everyday looks. lol
It also why I got the HUDA BEAUTY Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Sapphire over the Blood Blood one as A) The palette is way too big for travel and B) How much blue do I wear in my life REALLY outside of Aqua and Turquoise which I have single pans of. 😉
Both these palettes work like pressed pigments through a lot of colour but you need to primer to have them keep vibrant all day with my hooded eyes. Not unexpected though.
But I’ve also haven’t bought a lot of traditional palettes that past 2 years either as really how many neural everyday shades of work appropriate palettes do you need either. lol
Randomly Diamond Wet is something I’m having a way to much fun with and I use it also on the eyes. lol
Haul: a replacement backup of Clarins Super Restorative Eye Cream, Australian Gold un-tinted SPF 50 sunblock (I love the tinted version but wanted something for body and hands) but the neatest thing – Sephora sent me the Huda Beauty Gemstones e/s palette along with a few other goodies simply because I’ve submitted lots of reviews over the years. As someone who is not a blogger or “influencer” and doesn’t received samples or freebies, this was so nice (I’d forgot about the email and figured I’d taken too long to reply so was surprised to arrive home yesterday to this box). The shadows aren’t exactly “my” colours (I’d have been much happier with the one called “Smokey” but I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth) but it will force me to move out of my comfort zone a bit.
Weekend plans: we’re having our belated Fathers Day brunch on Sunday so younger son and his girlfriend will be home and daughter and her husband are coming for brunch; after that, we all have a wine tasting in Niagara. I’m hoping to get to the gym tomorrow morning and then it will be cooking and cleaning (I’m actually in the midst of making a blueberry coffee cake as I type this)
Favourite quotes: lots – from the Three Stooges, “if at first you don’t succeed, keep on suckin’ til you do succeed” and one that was attributed to Oscar Wilde but I don’t know if he actually said it: “If you don’t have anything nice to say about anyone, some sit here by me” (and I’m really not that mean or gossipy but I still love the quote). There are lots more, far more uplifting and reflective of what I really am like and what I believe but I don’t want to hog too much space!

And a surprise too, Tammy, because when I got the email, I was a bit suspicious (is this phishing?) and by the time I’d assured myself it was likely legit, I thought it would be too late since the email said there was a limited quantity. Anyway, I never post photos of my “looks” and don’t take part in discussions there but I review a lot of products so I guess however they track that activity, they figured it was worth it to include me (there are customers who contribute a LOT more than I do, I’m sure).
That was nice of Sephora to send you a free gift. I do have the Huda Smokey palette and it would absolutely be up your tree. The Gemstone palette is nice, but I can see what you mean about suiting you.
Enjoy your Father’s Day brunch – I think brunches are a great idea, so many yummy, healthy options to eat too.
“healthy options” – you SLAY me, Genevieve! My every day breakfasts are very healthy but at brunch, I really let loose with all the stuff that isn’t healthy….bacon piled high, a brunch casserole loaded with cheese and sausage as well as eggs, an “almost healthy” (well, it contains yogurt) blueberry coffee cake, but there is whipped cream to put on top. The only “healthy” thing is probably the salad! But what the heck – it’s a little celebration.
Maybe I should look at the Huda Smokey palette in the store, though I have the Smashbox Minimalist palette which might be quite similar.
Haul/rediscoveries: Nothing this week! I’ve really been missing my makeup though so I’m going to start doing a full face of belly dance performance makeup at least once a week to keep my skills sharp and try new things. I haven’t worn makeup in over a month and that’s just ridiculous.
Weekend plans: I’m in the midst of a 4-day weekend for July 4th (a holiday I don’t particularly like). We have friends visiting from out of state, so our plans are all about showing them some of our favorite parts of Seattle-area life! Today it’s game stores, ice cream, and then a game night at our place. Tomorrow it’s the aquarium, a street food festival, and maybe more games. Sunday I think we’re going out to Whidbey Island where one set of visiting friends is staying in an AirBnB. All fun stuff but I also feel like this introvert is gonna need another weekend to recover from the weekend 😉

I love that quote! I think this goes hand in hand with my favorite quote, “It’s none of your business what other people think of you.” I have gotten quite a bit of dislike over the years because I am energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. People who sit on the sidelines don’t always like people like me, because my drive has a tendency to make their complacency more noticeable. It took me a long, long time to figure this out. But when I go in a specific direction, I really dig in. My romantic partners have all loved this about me, but other women, not so much. I assume women have a tendency to be competitive with other women, and men with other men, so the judging often comes from the same gender, whichever side of the fence you are on.
I’ve always been wired to be a high achiever and I seek excellence in most areas of my life. This makes me less popular with certain people.
The irony is, I love people. I have a deep compassion and curiosity for others. I love being a social worker, and I connect most deeply with those who have been traumatized or live at the margins of society. I connect very well with clients and have been sought out for counseling via word of mouth. I do not have high standards for others, with the exception of one thing: You have to be nice. I do not like mean people. So it’s interesting to me when others (usually females) judge me before they speak to me. I always think, I could be the best friend they wished they had, if they would look past whatever they find threatening and just get to know me.
Tammy, very insightful and interesting. I’ve had struggles dealing with my own gender too my entire life and feel similarly that if these women would look past my supposed threat, they would see that I’m a very loyal and good friend. I’m blessed to be with my romantic partner (over 30 years) who appreciates my passion, talents and achievements, but I miss female friendships. I love your quote too–I still go through all the pain of rejection every time the backlash happens.

Thank you, Genevieve. I believe my daughter would be so appreciative of your condolences. Molly truly was special. When they adopted her, Molly was already 8 years old. She was their pooch for another 8 years, give or take. So, she did have a good, long life of being loved and well cared for, especially during her 2nd half of life!

Nancy, so sorry to hear about Molly. I lost my Samoyed, Skye, last year and plummeted into a deep depression because of it. She was only 8 and we’d had her from puppyhood. Haul: Finally, after three months wait, I received the Menagerie Cosmetics WhaleSong palette — and one pan arrived shattered. Sigh. I’m waiting to get the replacement pan and I only hope it doesn’t take three months. I also hauled three of the TooFaced Tutti Fruitti blushes during the Ulta sale. Today I’m supposed to receive the Give Me Glow Juicy Olive palette since the tracking info says “out for delivery” so will see…

Haul: I placed a Colourpop order for Blush Stix in More Is More, Uh Huh Honey Palette, and Blue Moon Palette that (finally) shipped today. Even though I have many eye palettes, I am sorely lacking in blues and yellows, so I’m quite excited about getting these.
Rediscoveries: Colourpop Good Sport Palette. I bought it when it came out last year, but never got into using it. I started experimenting with it this week and I surprised myself by how much I liked an orange-y eye look that I created, because I’ve never had much luck with orange.
Weekend plans: Family, chores, relaxing.

Hi, Genevieve. I know, the time really flew! I’ll post vacation pictures on my Instagram
It’ll be really hot — 90s and 100s Fahrenheit during the daytime, so light makeup. No products that can melt or brek in my luggage. I’m skipping eyeliner, super-bright eyeshadows, and contour powder.
I think I’m going to take:
*face primer, Too Faced Shadow Insurance, setting spray, and black mascara.
*bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel *bareMinerals Original Mineral Veil
*UD Naked Basics Palette. I’ll probably take one other palette, too, but I haven’t decided which. Maybe On the Run or Too Faced Clover.
*Blush — Probably theBalm Balm Desert and Physician’s Formula Plum Rose Butter Blush.
*Liquid lipsticks — a couple neutrals and 2 or 3 brights.
I might take a loose powder foundation, too.
Haul:
Stilazzi L302 (make up brush). I saw Mel Thompson use this one time in June and ordered it immediately, as it was unlike any other I use for highlighter. It’s a fine brush for highlighting, although not a must-have.
Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Extreme Matte lipstick in Epitome. I think I forgot to mention this lipstick, I actually hauled it in late May or early June. I am not a fan of matte lipsticks but I fell in love with the color. It is described as a blue-based red. It is not uncommon for blue-based reds to turn bright, dark pink on me, which is okay, as long as I’m not wanting a true red lip. This one actually goes a little vampy red-berry on me, which is a color I love. It is matte, but not overly drying. I find that if I use an emollient lipstick in the center, I can make it comfortable for all day. I like mixing formulas and colors anyway, so this is a fine color to add to my arsenal. Matte lipsticks are good at preventing the edges of my lipstick from traveling into lip wrinkles.
Chanel Les Beiges 9-pan eyeshadow palette in Les Indispensables. I really tried to resist this, for a number of reasons. First, it’s not Natasha Denona, Pat McGrath, or Viseart. It’s Chanel, and the Chanel formula is not as good as any of those. Second, it’s pricey, and if I’m going to spend that type of money, I should get ND, PM, or Viseart. Third, it’s NEUTRAL and I am not big on neutrals. I was watching Mel Thompson’s review of this palette and she basically said “you’ve already got these colors in your collection.” So I did my eyes with Indispensables and then tried to replicate with colors from my collection, which is substantial….but colorful. I could not replicate the look. Then I went on Temptalia to look for dupes, and I did NOT dupes for any of the colors. This is really telling, as I would imagine almost anyone else who buys as much make up as I do could surely dupe these colors. But with my passion for brights and colors, my collection is definitely lacking in neutrals. So Indispensables stays! (And I’m so happy, because I really, really like it.)
Chanel Les Beiges Water Fresh Tint in Medium. From the minute I first put this product on my face, my mind was yelling, “YES!” I am not a big foundation girl. I did not start wearing foundation until I was in my late 40’s, and then only sporadically. Now I do, but I use the bare minimum amount I can get away with and I definitely prefer light coverage. And still, I often look at my skin after I have my makeup on and I realize I preferred the look of my skin before I added the foundation and powder. It’s not that my skin is all that. I have imperfections. I guess I just like skin. At any rate, Chanel’s Water Fresh Tint really is just a tint of color. There is no coverage but it adds just a touch of something special, something that helps me pull off my bright shadows, cheeks and lips (you know how full glam eyes somehow look a little off without foundation?). I like the Water Tint because it adds hydration without heaviness. I am combo and don’t like the feel of products on my skin, especially in the summer, but I do need hydration. The Water Fresh Tint is weightless and grease-free and yet adds that needed moisture to my skin. The Water Fresh Tint can also be used as a primer for foundation, which is the way I’m wearing it today. But foundation does not feel good at all after experiencing the weightless joy of this product. I imagine it would not be right for many women, as there is literally no coverage, but I love it.
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Powder in N 20. In Chanel foundations I am matched in N 40, and this color is not quite warm enough, which is why I’ve never actually purchased a foundation from Chanel. But this powder is significantly darker than the foundations, just an FYI if someone here is thinking about purchasing online. At any rate, if I was going to try the Water Tint, I was going to get the powder for setting it. I have been setting my Water Tint with this powder and I like it. Because it is not translucent, it adds a touch of coverage to the Water Tint. It is not super glowy, but because I am already combo and it’s been in the 90’s here in Illinois, I am definitely fully glowing by lunchtime when I use these products together. So maybe my pores are showing (who am I kidding, my pores are DEFINITELY showing) but hey, pores are natural and maybe even a little sexy. At least, that’s my take on it, lol.
Weekend: I am so very happy this weekend. Hey, we got an extra day off this week and today one of my clinics closed early, so today was only a half day for me. I’ve decided to treat this like a 4-day weekend, at least in my mind. Yesterday I took my grand daughter shopping for her 14th birthday, which is just days away. I had so much fun watching her gush every time she found something she loved. We ended up with three pair of jeans, three tops, and a beautiful orange/mustard hoodie cardigan sweater that will be perfect for fall. When I got home, I made the one and only potato salad I love, baked beans, and barbecued hamburgers, all while drinking the amazing gin/tonic/fresh lime/raspberry & sage syrup concoction I discovered during our weekend in Chicago a month ago and have been making ever since. Tomorrow will be gym and mow the lawn, but we’ll also have down time for the remainder of the day. I love unstructured down time, it is the one thing I needed most during all the years of working, going to school, and raising a family. Sunday is always weights and cooking for the week ahead. I’ve been adding a lot of new exercises to my weight routine. Last weekend I worked out for 2.5 hours (I didn’t notice the passing of time because I was in my zone) and ended up not being able to walk very well from Sunday night to Thursday morning. This weekend I will back off a little. I like to be sore, but that was an embarrassing level of soreness. I had to make a concentrated effort to walk like a normal person at my clinics and not cry out in pain every time I stood up or sat down. (I have a strong focus on legs and butt in my workout routines–it’s all about that bass!)

For those of us that our sensitive and have people-pleasing tendencies, it can be very freeing to shift our focus from what people think about us to not trying to know what people think of us. There are a lot of mean, unhappy or just plain judgmental people out there, and if we pay attention to them, it can really crush our spirits. I have come to believe that unkind judgments are more about the person making them then they are about me. Hey, if I am doing something that hurts or bothers others and it’s a legitimate concern, then I want to know. But many times it is not really about me at all.

Firstly – I am truly AMAZED that you didn’t have dupes for that sublime Chanel Les Beiges. I really love this palette because it doesn’t contain a matte black or a white, just gorgeous truly neutral shades. So I really think you are going to find this one perfect either by itself or combined with other colours.
Secondly, a happy birthday to your grand daughter. 14 is such a magical age and I am sure that she appreciated and loved the opportunity to purchase some clothes for herself.
Now that my children are adults, I do appreciate the down time – I remember well all the hard work that it was working full time in a Leadership position whilst juggling a family, a home and all the professional development that I had to undertake or lead within the school I worked at. I definitely know where you are coming from here.
And I love your quote too – so much time is wasted worrying about what others (who may have their own issues) think about us. It can be soul destroying and limiting. Your comments are spot on.

I had to make it my motto in order to survive at work. I started my career on an inpatient adult psych hospital unit. The nurses and CNAs were the type of women who crossed their arms across their chests and looked at you up and down with a mean glare. On my first day, my trainer said, “I don’t even know why they hired you” and then refused to train me. There I was, the enthusiastic and friendly type, passionate about social justice and treating others with dignity and respect, and sensitive to boot. Those girls made my life a living hell for a few years. I found myself having to focus my kindness on the patients. I was mature enough to know my values and heart were right, no matter how they treated me, and I gave all my energy and enthusiasm to patients.
It was a co-worker who gave me the quote above at the beginning of my 6th year on the unit. She knew I was a good person, I cared deeply for our patients, and I worked hard at doing my job well. I hung it by my desk because I needed it to be right in front of my face to remind me to practice it daily.
It’s funny you mentioned it as an idea for a tattoo. I recently posted here about getting my first tattoo (at the age of 53, lol). The tattoo artist I commissioned was, sadly, unable to design a tattoo I loved. I have continued to look for an artist who is doing work that matches my vision, and I’ve found one in Ohio and one in Chicago that are possibilities. I personally don’t want words, but my daughter has words (and stars and flowers) tattooed all over her body. She has one from the base of her spine to her neck, and another across both thighs where you her legs have to be together so you can read the message as it travels across one thigh and onto the next.
Tammy, I don’t know why some people want to make other people’s lives miserable, except that their lives are not happy and they are projecting it back. Good for you for being strong and being above it. The world needs people like you, especially in your field, my sister is in her last year as a psychiatric nurse and it is rewarding but exhausting.
Your daughter’s tattoo sounds amazing. I’m too chicken to get a tattoo, I have a Pinterest board full of the ones I like but that’s as far as it goes.

Being a nurse I was so saddened by your experience and so value your quote. While doing actual bedside nursing, I did all of the orientation for new hires and newly graduated nurses. I feel very strongly about mentoring new staff. I would watch other staff work with new graduates and we often referred to their technique as “eating their young”. Of course, it doesn’t apply to all nurses but there are enough out there that do just that. Beside the moral issue I always knew I was going to want to retire someday and if the young nurses drop out of nursing do to poor support, I might not be able to do that!! I love the quote and I plan to add it to a mixed media piece that I am working on!
Hi Tammy, I really enjoyed your description of the Water Fresh Tint and using it with the Chanel powder. I, too, noticed that the powder shade is darker than the foundation shades and really like the idea of the powder giving a hint of colour when setting the Water Fresh Tint. Will be giving that a try!! I’m enjoying and experimenting with Chanel foundations: from the barely there but corrective Water Fresh Tint to the medium coverage Vitalumiere Aqua to the full coverage Ultra Le Teint. Bobbi Brown is the only other brand where I’ve regularly used multiple foundations in the range (and it helps that I can restock them via the CCO). I do enjoy wearing foundation, and I like how I look wearing foundation (foundation and lipstick are my “essentials”). Yet, I’m so intrigued by the Water Fresh Tint and how it evens out the slight redness in my skin, leaving me to only conceal here and there. Quite innovative.
My new thing is that I’ve been lining my lips with Maybelline’s Ink Crayon in Enjoy the View and filling them in with MAC’s Powder Kiss lipstick in Mull it Over. The ink crayon is a shade deeper when swatching, but on my lips the difference is so so minimal that I don’t look like I’ve lined them- they just look fuller. And the “dirty peach” color of both products is delicious to me, a color that is flattering while still being somewhat subversive and a little ugly.
I keep a notebook of “things no one has ever quoted” meaning little phrases I’ve come across that feel significant but aren’t the sort of thing you’d say in public. The first one I ever found is “I think that the spirit of this century has finally taken me and broken me,” from Orlando.

Shopping for my daughters birthday. We’re feeling pretty sad that we had to euthanize our beloved gray Tabby cat of 16 years. We hated to let him go and nursed him with pain meds, CBD oil, nausea and appetite medicine after his diagnosis of liver cancer in October. He made it almost 9 months before he got too small and weak. I cried like a baby. He was a loving family member. Man those pet funeral people make a killing off the cremation and keepsake items!

I am so sorry for your tremendous loss of your precious kitty, Denise. Definitely understand how devastating that feels, having lost my sweet “babycat” Pookie almost 3 years ago. I blubbered for several days, too. We do everything we can to save them, or at least make them as comfortable as possible until their time is up, but wish that they had so much more time with us. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I steadfastly resisted having a pet after moving out of my parents home. My daughter was never allowed to have a pet while her father and I were married. She wanted a kitten so bad and he always said he was allergic but I doubted that and was proven right later on. In any event, when I retired to Montana my daughter asked if she could have a kitten. We went to an animal shelter and she, or rather the kitten, picked her. Her furbaby has spent more time with me than with her due to college and sharing an apartment with a friend who had a cat that our cat, Sophie, didn’t like. Anyway, she is very much still my daughter’s cat though. She follows my daughter everywhere, talks to her and is so loving. She tolerates me!! I dread the day that something happens to her or we have to make the difficult decision that you have had to make. She is a member of our family as was your baby. I am truly sorry for your loss.
Thanks for the condolences. Our cat Blaow also talked a lot to my daughter and waited at the bottom of the steps for her to come down, sounds similar to your daughter’s cat. My daughter left her act while she went to college, and he was waiting for her when she came back.

We went into the local shopping centre to find a police costume for him. Luckily Target saved the day.

Sunday – We are taking the grandchildren to visit the Fire Brigade Museum in the city, so it should be an enjoyable outing. There are plenty of parks nearby for them to run around in too.
